24.01.2022 Welcome to the inaugural First Friday with Flinders. As mentioned last week, our moment of music videos will now be shared on the first Friday of each month. We are immensely grateful to everyone for supporting this endeavour and all of the wonderful feedback, it really has kept us going during the isolation period! And even though we here in Victoria now face new uncertainty, we are forging ahead with our plans to return to the concert stage with live streamed concerts pla...nned for July, August, and beyond, and we hope you will join us online for those, too. Our first live stream for this year will also be our debut on the Melbourne Digital Concert Hall with the world premiere of Katy Abbotts Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender, an incredible work we were set to premiere at this years Canberra Festival before it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Well be sharing more about the premiere in the coming weeks on social media and in our regular e-news. Thursday 23 July, 7pm to 8pm Live streamed on Melbourne Digital Concert Hall Tickets are just $24 and can be booked here: https://watch.melbournedigitalconcerthall.com/#/item/54239 Our moment of music today is the sublime Jean Sibelius String Quartet No. 4 in D minor, Voces Intimae (Intimate Voices). We recorded this work in July 2015 the week before leaving on an unforgettable tour to Finland and Sweden where we performed the complete works for string quartet by Sibelius. We never had a chance to film any of these performances, but thought wed share this recording accompanied by some of the photos taken during that trip (mostly by Shane and Zoe). There are even a few shots with Helens son Kaan and Zoes daughter Indie, back when they were so little! We look back on this trip very fondly, and we hope you enjoy these images and this beautiful string quartet. Well be back again next month with the August First Friday with Flinders moment of music. Until then keep well, stay safe. JEAN SIBELIUS (1865-1957) String Quartet No. 4 in D minor, Op. 56 Voces Intimae (Intimate Voices) I Andante - Allegro molto moderato II Vivace III Adagio di molto IV Allegretto (ma pesante) V Allegro HELEN AYRES violin SHANE CHEN violin HELEN IRELAND viola ZOE KNIGHTON cellos Recorded 6-8 July 2015 in the Wyselaskie Auditorium, Parkville, Melbourne and released on the ABC Classics label. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to the Strike a Chord finalists! We look forward to seeing the grand final on Melbourne Digital Concert Hall on September 12th
23.01.2022 Last night was one of the most important premieres in our 20 year history. Katy Abbott, Composers Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender" has touched so many hearts, and many of you have told us of the wide array of emotions it has evoked. Thank you everyone for tuning in to this Melbourne Digital Concert Hall performance, we really felt your presence. A big shout out to our beloved first violinist Thibaud, stuck in NSW due to border restrictions. We couldnt have done this p...erformance without all of your preparation over the past six months. We are enormously grateful that Elizabeth Sellars was able to step in at the last minute; it was a great joy to play with her. A big thank you Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) for all of your support with this performance, and just generally the amazing work that you do. We are immensely grateful to Kabuku Public Relations for helping get the message out about this very important performance. We are so lucky that you chose to support us during such a challenging time in our industry. (images courtesy of Monica Curro, thank you for letting us share them!)

22.01.2022 So looking forward to seeing this on Sunday! Tune in with us to ABC Compass this Sunday (23 Aug) at 6.30pm AEST for Genevieve Lacey and Sophie Ryamonds Recorder Queen film.
22.01.2022 As those of us in Victoria bunker down for our COVID-19 lockdown and a cold snap, we wanted to share a brief moment of music that we hope will bring little warmth and joy to your day. Boccherinis Fandango quintet is a work weve had the enormous pleasure of performing in both its guitar and cello quintet forms, with Karin Schaupp (guitarist) and Timo Veikko-Valve (cellist). Here, we share with you the vibrant final movement of the guitar quintet, performed with the extrao...rdinary Karin Schaupp in 2011. Watch for Zoes stellar performance with the castanets towards the end! Nearly ten years ago, we toured and recorded this work (and others) with Karin and released Fandango on the ABC Classics label, earning an ARIA nomination for Best Classical Album. Sadly, the CD is out of print but you can still find it on iTunes and Spotify. Well be back again next month with the September First Friday with Flinders moment of music. Until then keep well, stay safe (and warm!). 16.01.2022 FQ is thrilled to be sponsoring a 12 month mentorship prize for Musica Viva Australias new National Chamber Music Championship. We cant wait to get to know these budding young chamber musicians and help them realise their musical ambitions. Its incredibly exciting to know that chamber music is being fostered and encouraged nationwide at the secondary level and we are very excited to take part. Were sure we will learn as much from the young guns as they will from us! Bravo Musica Viva and everyone involved.

14.01.2022 Our thoughts are with you all as we continue to bunker down and weather this persistent COVID-19 storm. The past month has been a time for reflection for many Melbournians, with precious few hours outside and much time spent inside. In a fit of spring cleaning, Zoe discovered this Serenade by the English composer, Gordon Jacob (1895-1984). He has been described as the musicians musician and was much loved during his lifetime. Perhaps better known as an arranger, this mu...lti-movement work shows his conversational style of composition, with a gift for quirky twists and turns. While we wait for the day we can make music together again, this piece for one musician seems very appropriate. A one-sided conversation, with little argument, this piece does seem to reflect the many questions we all have at the moment. Zoe has even peppered the video with some home footage in and around Docklands. For our next Friday with Flinders on the first Friday in October, we hope to show you a little about how we have been rehearsing Beethovens Op. 132 remotely in the brave new world of living online. Until then, keep well and stay safe. GORDON JACOB (1895-1984) Cello Serenade I. Prelude III. Ecossaise ZOE KNIGHTON cello Filming by Zoe Knighton, sound editing by Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba
14.01.2022 As we prep for tonight’s concert (6pm AEDT - join us!) we wanted to share a couple of snaps from Wednesday’s recording session. A super productive day recording the five Composer Development Program works - enormous thanks to Mano Musica - Recording & Post Production!
14.01.2022 Happy 12th birthday, Melbourne Recital Centre Oh, how we are looking forward to playing in the Primrose Potter Salon again soon. We have really missed that gorgeous space, one that feels like a second home! 2021 sees us performing 11am and 6pm one-hour concerts (no interval) on May 17 and October 25. The May 17 concert is our Clifford Hocking AM memorial concert (music in the memory of Australia’s great impresario who supported FQ in our early years), with a sublime conce...rt program of works by Fanny Mendelssohn, Imogen Holst, and Australia’s own Ella Macens Music. The October 25 concert features Beethoven’s mammoth string quartet Op. 131, one that we think holds a special place in the hearts of anyone who has heard it. Capacity is limited, please book early. Click the link below for info and bookings. We hope to see you there! Pia Johnson

13.01.2022 Seven years in the making, "Recorder Queen", the semi-animated documentary directed by Sophie Raymond ("Mrs Careys Concert") takes the audience on a journey into the inner world of virtuoso (and our dear friend) Genevieve Lacey. Recorder Queen film will air on ABC Compass on Sunday 23 August, 6.30 pm AEST. A daring and innovative genre-bending short film "Recorder Queen" is a celebration of creativity through music, animation and collaboration. We are immensely proud of Genevieve (who really is the Recorder Queen!) and honoured to have been a small part of this very special project. (well post a little reminder about this closer to the air date)

11.01.2022 Our thoughts are with everyone during these increasingly challenging times. As those of us in Victoria take a deep breath and bunker down for the next six weeks, here are some musings from the four of us about what has been on our minds over the past few months. We hope you enjoy this little insight into our lockdown worlds, and wed love to hear about yours! Stay safe. http://www.flindersquartet.com/lockdown-interviews ... Pia Johnson
10.01.2022 Really wonderful news from our friends at MDCH! If you missed Thursdays premiere (or want to watch it again) heres you chance. But not for long! A big thank you MDCH
10.01.2022 A beautiful interview with Katy Abbott, Composer on "Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender" in The Age on Monday - enjoy!
10.01.2022 We just love working with secondary school students that are passionate about chamber music. The four of us couldnt resist offering a prize of a 12 month mentorship program with FQ for a deserving ensemble in Musica Viva Australias Strike A Chord competition. We cant wait to meet our new mentees! Youll have a chance to hear them when we invite them on stage for a performance in one of our 2021 concerts. Its a brilliant initiative by Musica Viva and we are just a little bit proud that our very own Wilma Smith is Artistic Director of the competition. Entries close 27 August
09.01.2022 In order to minimise our activity during this lockdown period, we have (sadly!) deferred our Composer Development Program until October. In exciting news, however, we will be streaming live from the rehearsal room with the composers joining us remotely and you can tune in from the comfort of your couch to gain an insight into what its like as a composer to have your piece played live for the first time. Tune in for 10 minutes or the whole day, its always fun to be a fly on ...the wall in a rehearsal room! There will even be a chance to ask some questions of the composers and the quartet. New dates and details about viewing the workshop and performance streams will be announced in the coming month or so. Polyphonic Pictures
09.01.2022 Thanks so much to those who have responded to our audience and supporter feedback survey. If you have not yet and would be able to we would love to get your feedback! https://www.surveygizmo.com//Flinders-Quartet-Audience-Sup (and heres a fond memory from earlier this year... back when could be together in person, and share some birthday cake for FQs 20th)
09.01.2022 As we immerse ourselves in Katy Abbott, Composers new piece ahead of the July 23rd premiere, Wilma and Zoe had the great privilege of sifting through the returned letters at the heart of the work. Letters which remained unopened until Julian Burnside gave Katy permission to open and read them, and use them to create this masterpiece. Having had the opportunity to see this pile of letters in person, we feel a great responsibility to bring these unheard words to life. Katy ha...s consolidated and unified the voices within these letters in such a sensitive way, and we are so glad that she chose to use the string quartet as the musical voice to underpin the sentiment conveyed in these letters. We cant wait to share this work with you on Melbourne Digital Concert Hall on July 23rd, we hope you will join us. Tickets: https://watch.melbournedigitalconcerthall.com/#/item/54239 Agatha Yim, Polyphonic Pictures
08.01.2022 Tune into ABC Classic Drive this afternoon to catch Katy Abbott, Composer and Zoe Knighton chatting to Vanessa Hughes about "Return to Sender". (only six sleeps until the premiere!)
08.01.2022 Rehearsals leading up to the premiere of a new work are always intense, and the emotion in Katy Abbott, Composers "Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender" is making this preparation a particularly wild ride! The time spent with Katy, Richard Piper and Dimity Shepherd over the past week has been sublime, and we cant wait to perform this very special work on Melbourne Digital Concert Hall tomorrow night, 7pm AEST. Bookings: https://watch.melbournedigitalconcerthall.com/#/item/54239
07.01.2022 Warm thanks to Australian Music Centre for helping us spread the word about Thursdays premiere. This is a really wonderful interview with Katy Abbott, Composer - enjoy!
07.01.2022 Firstly, a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us through these extraordinary times. It has really kept us going, knowing that you love chamber music and the great music for string quartet as much as we do. Our thoughts are with you all as we navigate the next steps together. With Sundays Victorian Government announcement about Stage IV restrictions being extended and the release of the roadmap for reopening, we now know that the remainder of our October 2020 concer...ts will be cancelled. And that its unlikely we will perform in front of a live audience until 2021. A full list of the cancelled events can be found at this link: http://www.flindersquartet.com/covid19-updates Our Montsalvat, Collins Street Baptist Church and Melbourne Recital Centre subscribers and ticket holders are entitled to a full refund via the Melbourne Recital Centre box office. If you paid using EFTPOS or cash over the counter, the Melbourne Recital Centre box office team will be in touch to assist you in receiving your refund. If you purchased online or over the phone, they will refund your credit card. This will happen automatically, you dont need to contact them to obtain your refund. We realise that not everyone is in a position to donate back the cost of their ticket, but if you are able to help us as we plan for 2021, we would be extremely grateful. Every little bit helps! Melbourne Recital Centre box office are not able to simply pass this on to FQ as a donation, unfortunately. Instead, they will refund your ticket/s as outlined above and then if you would like to pass this onto us a donation, we invite you to do that here: https://www.givenow.com.au/flindersquartet (which will also generate a tax-deductible receipt). If you have any questions or concerns about these concert cancellations, or making a donation, please contact us. If you have any questions or concerns about your Melbourne Recital Centre, Montsalvat or Collins Street Baptist Church ticket refund, please contact Melbourne Recital Centre box office at [email protected]. We are still hopeful of being able to go ahead with our annual Composer Development Program later in the year, when we are able to be in the same room together to rehearse, workshop and perform (and we intend to live stream the workshop process and final performance). We are also planning at least one other live streamed performance before the years end, with news about that to follow soon. Lets hope 2021 brings brighter news and lots of great live music-making. Stay safe and well everyone, Thibaud, Wilma, Helen and Zoe @
07.01.2022 Our 2020 Composer Development Program is all too quickly coming to a close. The rehearsals and workshops are done, we’ve just finished the studio recording, and now we prepare for the final concert on Saturday evening with the premieres of these five incredible works. We hope you will join us for the free live stream here on our Facebook page or YouTube channel. In the meantime, here is a lovely little interview with one of this year’s participants, Helen Wanders. Enjoy: http://www.flindersquartet.com/helenwanders2020
07.01.2022 We would love your thoughts Our 20th birthday year hasnt been quite what wed expected, thanks to the curveball that 2020 has thrown at us all. But we are very proud to make it to this landmark celebration. Weve been taking time to reflect on our journey, to capture our story and to think about what weve learnt along the way. We are also thinking about the path ahead. As part of the FQ family, we would love to hear your perspectives about what we do and how we fit wit...hin the classical music sector. Were working with an external evaluator, Regina Hill, who is helping us to collect and reflect on feedback from different perspectives. Regina has helped us to prepare this survey as part of that process. Only she will have access to the individual responses that are submitted and will be reviewing and aggregating the themes that come through the feedback for us. We would really appreciate it if you would complete the following survey for her by 5pm, Monday 7 September. It shouldnt take long. Thanks for your support in doing this. It means a great deal to us. Pia Johnson
07.01.2022 The pieces we are rehearsing ahead of tomorrow evening's live stream have really sustained us through this year. Not only have they given us something substantial to look forward to, but these pieces have provided an emotional context for us to process all the various events of this extraordinary year. You might be surprised to know that we were planning to perform Beethoven's Op. 132 "Prayer of Thanksgiving" before the onset of COVID-19 but in rehearsing this piece, we hones...tly think our reading of it has been enhanced by the feelings in Melbourne as we emerge from lockdown. We have been astounded by how well the process of rehearsing with Deborah Cheetham AO and Ella Macens Music over Zoom has been working. Each of these two pieces are complete gems: beautifully written, thought provoking, and the catalyst for many great philosophical discussions. After being patient for so long, we are itching to play them for you, and we hope you will join us tomorrow evening for a free live streamed performance from the MLIVE David Li Sound Gallery. 06.01.2022 "A powerfully emotional and complex work, Hidden Thoughts 2: Return to Sender bursts with subtle musical and textual detail It is a work both of its time and timeless. As many of us relate to the plight of detainees by experiencing our own comparatively insignificant restrictions on physical liberty, Abbotts inspired work assumes special significance. It resonates at a visceral level. Heather Leviston and Classic Melbourne: this review is so beautifully written, thank you! ... The performance is available on demand through Melbourne Digital Concert Hall until August 3, click this link: https://watch.melbournedigitalconcerthall.com/#/item/55839 and enjoy! And if you do film/record yourself joining us in the final part, we would love to hear you Please share it with us via private message or email [email protected]
05.01.2022 Next week sees us performing not one, but two world premieres for Monash University’s MLIVE Sound Gallery Sessions! Deborah Cheetham’s new work Bungaree, commissioned with the help of Andrew Dixon, is just extraordinary. See a snippet of a chat Zoe and Deborah had earlier this year during the online workshopping of this piece at the video below. The November 25 concert also sees the premiere of Ella Macens' new work A Love Worth Fighting For, commissioned with the support... of Peter and Leila Doyle. For those who wrote and told us how much you loved the work Ella composed for our 2017 Composer Development Program, Resting with Angels, you won’t be disappointed! This is a free event live streamed from the David Li Sound Gallery (on Facebook and YouTube), and we hope you will join us November 25 at 7pm AEDT. Streaming details can be found here: https://www.monash.edu//wha/events/sound-gallery-sessions/
04.01.2022 Is it too late to say Happy New Year?! After a quiet summer break, we’re all feeling completely refreshed and looking forward to a great year. We have heaps of 2021 news coming - stay tuned for info about everything we’re planning for this year. Due to reduced capacity, a couple of our 2021 concerts have already sold out. We are keeping a close eye on the evolving restrictions in Victoria and will release additional tickets if/when possible. If tickets are currently unavaila...ble for a Flinders Quartet concert that you would like to attend and you would like to join a waitlist, please contact us (send us a message or email [email protected]). We can’t wait to get back to rehearsing and performing. Here’s to a brighter 2021 FQ21 season info: http://www.flindersquartet.com/2021 Pia Johnson
03.01.2022 2020 saw a record number of submissions to our Composer Development Program. We were thrilled to discover the five gems by Daniel, Scott, Tom, Helen and Lee; chosen anonymously by the quartet and composer mentor Katy Abbott. Each of these composers has already developed a unique voice and it was a privilege to be the ones bringing these pieces to life for the first time. The Composer Development Program remains one of our favourite projects of each year, just like unwrapping ...five early Christmas presents! Here’s the concert from Saturday night if you missed it (or want to watch again). Keep an eye out for these five composers - we are certain they have some great careers ahead. Details for our 2021 Composer Development Program will be announced soon!
03.01.2022 So wonderful to be back together again in the rehearsal room, and playing this wonderful music by Deborah Cheetham AO and Ella Macens Music! Join us for a free live stream of Bungaree, A Love Worth Fighting For, plus a little Beethoven: Wednesday 25th November at 7pm AEDT via MLIVE.
