19.01.2022 Continuing the Feds attack on the Arts, LNP NSW now attack the State Writers Centre. Please do as Jane asks and see if together we can derail this pointed defunding.. "Its awful having to post this, but Im writing to ask all of you who care about writers and writing to stand up for Writing NSW, the organisation I lead. Im beyond devastated that the main organisation for writers in NSW has been defunded by the state government, in the middle of a global pandemic, and in a funding round that saw only 5% of long-term arts funding go to literature. If you care about this, please contact your local state MP, along with Minister for the Arts Don Harwin, and please ask your friends and colleagues to do the same." - Jane McCredie https://www.smh.com.au//writing-nsw-faces-existential-cris

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Flood Manuscripts' client Steven J Doyle on the pre-release of his ripper YA speculative adventure novel, The Hero Gene, and on the creation of an unassuming eco-warrior superhero to save the planet from US (and alien imperialists). Solar narcolepsy anyone? Now available on sale pre-release until the launch late November (presently shipping in Australia only). https://theherogene.com/

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Flood Manuscripts client Mark Furness on the publication of the first in his Firefly Electrics series Justice Machine, a refreshingly wry entry into the burgeoning genre of Aussie crime. Furness has already scored top level in the international crime thriller genre with his gripping Under Eden trilogy, but these eccentric inner-city Sydney crusaders are a whole new adventure in crime capers and my favourite series of the year so far. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08GLSPW4J

14.01.2022 Wow... THIS LETTER. In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write a famous author and ask for advice. Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond ...- and his response is magnificent: Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta: I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure know how to cheer up a really old geezer (84) in his sunset years. I dont make public appearances any more because I now resemble nothing so much as an iguana. What I had to say to you, moreover, would not take long, to wit: Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out whats inside you, to make your soul grow. Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed potatoes. Pretend youre Count Dracula. Heres an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will flunk you if you dont do it: Write a six line poem, about anything, but rhymed. No fair tennis without a net. Make it as good as you possibly can. But dont tell anybody what youre doing. Dont show it or recite it to anybody, not even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK? Tear it up into teeny-weeny pieces, and discard them into widely separated trash recepticals. You will find that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your poem. You have experienced becoming, learned a lot more about whats inside you, and you have made your soul grow. God bless you all! Kurt Vonnegut
