22.01.2022 Instructions to survive a bad day . . 1). Take one deep breath. Exhale. count two of your best blessings & say today I hope you have not come to stay, there’s no room in today for anxiety.... . . 2). Seek Safety in self. This is Home. Hold this space for it’s your first & only home that you’ll never be evicted from. . . 3). Rest. Recharge. Regain. And do it again & again until you can say I am me & this is all I have to give. ........................................... These are some of my notes from Saturday’s virtual poetry workshop for #worldmentalhealthday . Thank you to SA Mental Health Coalition & facilitators @wallis.prophet & @alison.paradoxx for creating a virtual safe space. It was a wonderful escape from isolation. . . These words are a reminder for myself because I have burdened myself with the task of constantly trying to be productive. Even at the height of these times I find myself unconsciously: writing lists to check boxes, creating mental spread sheets & nursing insomnia over plans of what to do next & looking for answers to questions I absolutely have no business trying to answer. . . Doing all of this when really all I needed-want is rest- rest only. . . Note to self: Dear Flora, rest is productivity.

19.01.2022 If I can amalgamate everything that has been the process of writing this book into one statement than I would possibly have nothing to say. It is true, as writers we are selfish in the sense that we only write for ourselves & the worlds of our minds, if in the process of doing so we touch the lives of people well beyond our verses our rhymes, rhythms and word plays, the people that speak but remain unheard than it’s also true that all that is pain & unjust in this world can b...e undone word for word, thought for thought & action for action. The words in this book though they may bleed the ink of my pen may not be for me or for everyone but the world is vast & if the words in this book give comfort to just one heavy heart & one restless mind then nothing in this book would be in vain & the world is mine. Now you can call me Author Flo! & just like that it’s a fucking wrap because 2019 is the year of South Sudanese writers Cover Design Photography: @Buk Duach Creative Director: @Awak Kongor P.s Adelaide am ready for you! 18.01.2022 The most challenging part of the writing process is editing, It’s a relentless phase of mental strain that never ends. All in all I am beyond grateful to have been able to self-publish my work, in doing so I have been able to employ a great deal of self agency, learn so much and refined all that I have learnt. I am optimistic for the days a head but I mostly pray that through this journey God will grant me the wisdom & humility to not only better myself but better the lives of those around me. These are wonderful times

06.01.2022 I have been overcome with so much grief lately. I was in that state of grief not because there’s nothing to be joyous about but because of the seemingly endless pattern of pain that has engulfed our community for the passed three months. At such times, I was even starting to question if there was anything even worth celebrating. I remembered that On friday morning I will be picking up the bulk order of my books ready for my launch on Saturday. Then I thought of all the lives ...we have lost & what a shame it would be if we only held on to the pain of losing them & not held them & their memories in our hearts. There’s excitement & then there’s that suspenseful, on the edge feeling between optimism (because you don’t know what will happen next but you accept it) & humility because what ever happens we will take it as is and not question what’s a head. What a time to be alive, I am so grateful for the days that have carried my existence & I hope that the days ahead will carry more hope & less pain. : Awak Kongor See more
