18.01.2022 From Diderot’s Encyclopedia, 1751-1772, these fabulous engravings were published to instruct artists on how to draw faces in the academic style. ‘Dessein -Tetes’. The first to term the word 'encyclopedia', this great project of the French enlightenment attempted to publish the sum of human knowledge in art, science and technology, in several volumes called the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts).

A large, beautifully coloured sheet of the fertile Nile River valley of Egypt, and the exotic regions of North-Eastern Africa around Abyssinia and the Red Sea. Scottish mapmaker Thomson was among the best of the time. Spice trade routes, journey time by camel caravans between oases and desert towns, and tribal regions provide are shown with meticulous attention to detail, and provide an alluring picture of this exotic and historically rich region.
