24.01.2022 HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS // HPV . Most people infected with HPV do not have any symptoms and are cleared within 1224 months post-infection. If you are infected with a high risk strain of HPV, the virus can cause changes to the cervical cells which, in some cases may lead to cervical cancer. Persistence of HPV infection is needed to start the oncogenic Process. . Factors that may contribute to the persistence and progression and of HPV infecti...on to neoplasia include oral contraception use, cigarette smoking, immunosuppression, and nutrient status. . The vaginal microbiome // whats it got to do with it ? . The vaginal microbiome is the only microbiota where the less diverse microbes = the better. It is dominated by lactobacilli species, creating an acidic environment -this environment reduces STI risk, Protects against cervical dysplasia & cervical cancer . Women with HPV infection often have higher diversity of vaginal microbiota (remember lower diversity = better). Women with Lactobacillus gasseri dominated microbiota were found to have the fastest HPV remission rate, and those with low numbers of Lactobacillus gasseri had the slowest rate of HPV remission. . A study in Italy found that 3-6 months intravaginal application of the probiotic strain lactobacillus rhamnosus resulted in resolution of cellular abnormalities and a higher rate of HPV clearance. . Studies have suggested that higher dietary consumption and circulating levels of certain nutrients may be protective against cervical neoplasia. . Nutrients to support HPV clearance: . Supplementation with DIM- Improved Pap smear was seen in 49% of women, with either a less severe abnormality or normal result. Where can we find DIM? Think brassica family (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale etc) these Brassica indoles are all potent anti-HPV molecules, and support the livers metabolism of oestrogen. . 23.01.2022 F O O D S //4// Y O U R//T H Y R O I D . In my previous post, I went over all the various things that you need to consider to ensure that your thyroid is able to work to its full potential - I have also just put up my new BLOG on "HYPOTHYROIDISM - ITS NOT YOUR THYROIDS FAULT!" where I go over this in more detail and give you some super easy tips to look after each area. (Link is in bio at @melissa.hohaia.natruropath) .... In amongst all of the thyroid considerations, it is important to give some attention to the foods you eat. The functioning of your thyroid gland can be affected by the foods that you consume - so making sure that you are not over-doing it or under-doing it on certain foods can have a positive impact on your thyroid health. . Foods to optimise thyroid function include: Eggs Fish Seaweed (think kelp, dulce, nori) Shellfish Soy Sauce Mineral sea salt or Celtic salt Brazil nuts Mushrooms . The foods that you want to steer away from and eat less often include: Almonds and peanuts Cauliflower Millet Pears Turnips Brussels sprouts Corn Cabbage Pine nuts Kale Peaches Soy (especially if it is not fermented) Canola oil Spinach Lastly, but most importantly (in my eyes) is gluten . Im not advocating that you completely eliminate these foods (except maybe the gluten one ?), just dont rely on them as your everyday staples - find other alternatives and consider cooking them (versus eating them raw) as this will lower their anti-thyroid effect. . ~ @melissa.hohaia.naturopath . @smilemakerscollection #thyroidhealth #thyroidawareness #nutrition #naturopathy #healthhub #selfcare #selflove #holistichealing #thyroid See more

21.01.2022 IS YOUR THYROID REALLY TO BLAME? . YOU ARE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS... . You are gaining weight and you think it might be because of your THYROID..but unfortunately it may not be your poor thyroids fault at all.... . I see women all the time that want to know "why". Why their weight is spiralling upwards - seemingly out of their control. It can be tempting to point your finger at one thing - it can feel like if you find that magic pot of gold then you might magically be able to make the weight just disappear. . The thing is though, I often see women who have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism but they dont see any positive weight loss even when they are medicated for an under active thyroid. The magical weight loss that they imagined would take place once their thyroid was looked after just never eventuated... It is disheartening and can leave you feeling completely lost - now what?!? . You see, the reason this happens is because there is more to the picture, and pointing your finger solely at your lil ol thyroid gland could be doing you a disservice. . Your thyroid gland is like the conductor of your metabolic orchestra - it signals for metabolic processes to either speed up or slow down depending on what your body feels that it needs. But not ALL weight gain is automatically due to a diseased or poorly functioning thyroid gland - so even though it is important to consider your thyroid, we dont want to start blaming it unnecessarily. . There are a lot of things that impact on the smooth running of your thyroid. This means that for optimal thyroid functioning you need to sometimes shift the focus away from the thyroid itself, and look beyond the confines of just using medication that replaces your thyroid hormone. . 18.01.2022 FUCUS VESICULOSUS // SUPERMINERAL POWER PLANT . Bladderwrack or Sea Oak, is a shore-dwelling seaweed from the North Atlantic Oceans. . This varietal of brown seaweed has been used as a whole plant or wholefood to make medicine.... . Bladderwrack has been used extensively in the past to treat an underactive thyroid issues. From as far back as the 1860s it was claimed that Bladderwrack, as a thyroid stimulant, could counter obesity by increasing metabolic rate. . Why and How? Its a rich plant source of iodine. Iodine deficiency is the most common worldwide cause of thyroid disorders, like hypothyroidism and an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) . As you can imagine, this seaweed tastes slimy, moist & salty.... thank goodness it has now been made into tablets. . Superpowers ~ Thyroid problems- especially hypothyroid (underactive) issues ~ Boosts metabolism and supports weight loss ~ Achy joints (rheumatism) and arthritis ~ Blood cleansing ~Heavy metal detoxification . Using Bladderwrack can also be unsafe if you have an iodine allergy or have an overactive thyroid. Its a wise idea to talk to a naturopath before taking any herbs or nutrients, so we can review you personally, take a look at your blood tests and ensure its the right fit for you. ~Angela xx #perthwellnesscommunity #perthfitfam #healthinperth #wellnesscollective #wellnesshub #perthwellnesshub #perthnaturopaths #naturalhealthperth #botanicalmedicine #herbs #herbnerd #herbalmedicine #naturalmedicine #botanics #herbalmagic See more

17.01.2022 Were here- the final weeks before Christmas! . Am right in saying that we need a holiday after surviving the holiday season? . For many women its the season of an ever-growing to do list. End of school year events & social gatherings. Shortly after Christmas, prep for New Year & packing for vacation. Its a whirlwind of costume organising, shopping, food prep, social events, giving extra time, money, & energy to all the things that come... with the holiday season. . What does all that amount to (aside from piles of debt & kilos of sugar)? Sleep-stealing, mood-changing, mind-freaking stress! . 3 Tips to keep your sanity over the festive season: . 1BREATHE: Breathing can stress instantly by activating relaxation (parasympathetic response). In doing so you heart rate & BP, and ease muscle tension. So, find daily triggers that remind you to breathe. When I get a red light, do the dishes, & wait for my caf brew its my que to breathe Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, release for 4, repeat 4x. . 2TUNE-OUT: Schedule time-out as if it were an important appointment that you cannot miss. LOCK IT IN! It might look like a snuggle session with your fur baby, a mug of chamomile & a good book by the window, or a long beach walk- take time to nurture yourself with a soothing practice every day. . 3BE KIND TO YOURSELF: Make every choice intentional & guilt-free. Swap guilt for gratitude - for friends, family, abundance, laughter; theres so much to be grateful for this time of year. Yes, you might indulge in rich food & ample booze, and if you do make it guilt-free a celebration (you deserve it!). Cheers to all the amazingness that you brought to 2019. Savour the flavours of the brandy-soaked pudding & enjoy it with good company & belly of laughter. . Our reality is simply perception. If your mantra is Im so stressed- so you will be. Celebrate the small wins daily & carry a little inner Zen with you all season long. . @stellamariabaer See more

17.01.2022 D E T O X I N G// The mere mention of a DETOX can stir up some polarising opinions...and I truly believe that it because there are detoxification-misconceptions out there. There are lovers & haters...and the conversation around detoxification can conjure up some intense responses. . There are people who truly (hand-on-heart) believe that doing a detox is completely unnecessary and just a well promote...d gimmick. . The real truth is that this CAN be the case - there are a mountain of well marketed "detox programs" out there that are a waste of your time & will have no lasting health benefits - in fact some can actually be more devastating to ur health & can cause more issues down the road! . So how do u know what is right for u? . Im here to help u make sense of it all & help u to navigate ur way through this potentially beneficial approach to resolving ur health issues. . Lets start with "Why u even might need to consider a detox"... . The first thing I want u to understand is that ur body is detoxing every single day of ur life weather u want it to or not. . Detoxification is as vital for life as breathing & digesting, and it happens passively without u needing to do anything. So why would u even need to even "do a detox"? . "Doing a detox" is about giving your body a partial break from everyday exposures while supporting detoxification pathways (involving the liver, kidneys, gut and lymphatic system) to be more efficient. This allows ur body to get ahead of the game instead of just treading water - as over time the junk and toxicity that u have been exposed to may have been more than what ur body could handle - so there becomes a back-log of junk that needs to be cleaned up. This is where it can take a toll on ur health. . (Continued in comments) @handmadelingen See more

17.01.2022 SCHISANDRA // THE ULTIMATE SUPERBERRY . Schisandra is a berry, yet dont think of it like another trending superberries like goji or acai. Perhaps we should. Thanks to this unique five taste profile, Schisandra helps balance the relationship of five internal organs- heart, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney. . Schisandra chinensis ...has over 2000 years of traditional use to prolong life, anti-aging , increase energy, as a fatigue-fighter, and as a sexual tonic. Schisandra also delivers protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. In essence, it helps to maintain healthy cells throughout the body. It is considered one of the most highly protective of all medicinal plants, and the berry is included in many traditional herbal formulas for improving energy and mental health. . 14.01.2022 In this New Year + New Decade of 2020, we renew the vow we made decades before to continue to serve, with the deepest joy and fierce dedication. . Native American teachings say that the Rainbow is made of human tears and that when a Rainbow appears, someones soul is being re-born. ... . The Rainbow has also been said to be a covenant between the Divine and the Human; how the human soul can be assured of its way forward out of darkness and dissolution, like now, in our home, Australia. . 14.01.2022 Creating new life is an exciting & exquisitely delicate period. Birth defects can unfortunately become a devastating reality for some families. . Birth defects are structural changes present at birth that can affect almost any part of the body, including heart, brain & neural tube, limbs, eyes, ears, & head. . Theres a lot you can do to minimize the risk of a birth defect. Preparing your body (and your partners) with effective preconcepti...on care & nutrition in the 3-4 months pre- conception and optimising mumma-to-bes wellness during pregnancy can enormously reduce chances of birth defects. . 4 steps to reduce risk of birth defect: . 1Get your body baby ready 4 months before you begin trying to conceive (your partners health is also just as important!). Ensuring your diet is nutrient rich is step one. 2There are some standout stars for nutritional supplementation prior to & during pregnancy such as Iodine, Choline, Folate, B12, Iron & DHA. These are not the only nutrients important for a healthy bub! Supplementation can differ according to family history, medication requirements & pre-existing health conditions, best to discuss with a qualified naturopath or nutritionist. At Floralia, we specialize in preconception care! 3Clean up your lifestyle! Nows the time to quit recreational drugs & cigarettes, 4-6 months prior at a minimum, and complete a specific fertility cleanse to be ready to start trying. Alcohol should be minimized to allow no more than 2 standard drinks weekly while trying, then cease during pregnancy. 4Multiple chemicals & toxins exist in our environment that are unsafe for foetal development. Its time to reassess the products in your household & workplace to be sure you have minimized your exposure to chemicals proven to increase risk of birth defects. . 14.01.2022 THYROID RESULTS NORMAL BUT YOU STILL FEEL LIKE CRAP? F R U S T R A T I N G But unfortunately its an all too common story in my neck-of-the-woods. I see a patient & they have been convinced by their GP that their thyroid is "just fine"...we have a look at their blood results & we can see it in black & white - their TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is sitting pretty - within reference range & looking just fine. Their symptom story just... doesnt match - the patient is presenting with classic hypothyroid symptoms (fatigue, full body exhaustion, weight gain, cold hands or feet, hair thinning, dry skin, low mood, foggy brain) so we do a bit further investigation, run some extra tests and WHAM BAM THANK YOU MAM, we see a different story. . More often than not TSH can be just fine - but the other parameters like free T3, free T4, TPO or TG thyroid antibodies, or reverse T3 are showing a different story. . I will often see a patients results come back with perfect TSH, free T3, free T4...but their thyroid antibodies are starting to climb - which indicates that they have an autoimmune condition of the thyroid (Hashimotos Thyroiditis) but it just hasnt progressed far enough yet to actually throw out the TSH reading. It could have gone unnoticed for years & then overnight become a full blown (hard to bounce back from) disease state. By detecting it early there are now things we can do that will really make a difference & potentially change ur long term health. . You see, the mainstream medical world is testing & looking for a situation where thyroid disease is present & warrants the use of medication...but there are many times when ur thyroid is not happy (or working at an ideal pace) & will benefit from other support or intervention that does not require Thyroxine. . 08.01.2022 How to make a fail-safe New Years resolution for 2020 . It is at this time of the year when we tend to do a stocktake of life. We take a step back and reassess if we are on the right path and what we are going to change to get us in a better place for the new year ahead. . Were you happy with your health in 2019?... Do you feel like you could be doing better? Do you have any unachieved goals that you want to make happen in 2020? . Most people find that the new year can bring a fresh-start-feeling a clean slate and an opportunity to set out with a renewed outlook. . I am all for setting goals and I have nothing against New Years resolutions, except that I find most people never actually stick to it. February rolls around and all the best laid plans have become a distant memory. It becomes an all-or-nothing situation. . So, what I have for you is one resolution that I feel trumps them allit might be really worth considering and it may even be one that you can stick to for good! . My fail-safe resolution is to DO MORE U-TURNS in 2020! (And I am not talking about the illegal road ones ) . What I mean by a U-TURN is your ability to turn around your choices at the next available opportunity. I often tell my patients that they need to become their own GPS unit. Imagine that you are following your GPS directionsif you happen to make the wrong turn then your GPS doesnt tell you that you F#*@ed up, so you might as well keep goinginstead it re-routes your journey or tells you to make a U-turn at the next available opportunity. . 06.01.2022 MTHFR ITS NOT A SWEAR WORD!// . It actually refers to a relatively common genetic mutation that can contribute to multiple health issues. . The MTHFR gene provides information that our bodies need for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins and for a chemical reaction involving the vitamin folate (also called vitamin B9).... . Depending on your MTHFR status you may have different requirements in your diet and nutritional supplementation. . This is a complex issue and tricky to cover in a quick IG post!! . In a nutshell, if you have a mutation on your MTHFR gene it can reduce your ability to create the more active folate. Depending on the specific mutation, this can potentially lower enzyme function by 20-70%. Essentially a lower enzyme function will lower your methylation function, a super important function that is responsible for turning many processes on and off in your cells. . There are some conditions strongly associated with MTHFR mutations, its definitely worth exploring your genetics if any of the conditions listed below are a part of your, or a close family members health journey- . Infertility Recurrent pregnancy loss Neural tube defects Depression, Anxiety or Insomnia Bipolar disorder Schizophrenia Autism Blood clots, stroke, embolism or heart attack Migraines Diabetes Chronic pain and fatigue Nerve pain . If this list sounds familiar, Id suggest finding professional support to arrange testing. And, more importantly interpreting the results and creating a plan for you specifically to overcome health challenges and maintain your long term health and vitality. . @nataliepickering_fertility . @andrea_m_kollar See more

03.01.2022 CERVICAL DYSPLASIA// . Cervical dysplasia (CD) refers to abnormal cell growth and pre-cancerous changes on the lining of the cervix. While dysplasia can be caused by a number of factors, virtually all cervical cancers test positive for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) DNA. Most notably, HPV strains 16 and 18, which are responsible for about 77% of cervical cancers in Australia. . HPV is a common, sexually transmitted infection that usually clear...s within 8-24 months of exposure. Once inside the host cell, the HPV DNA replicates as the basal cells divide to create new cells and form the surface area of the cervix So the HPV essentially piggy backs on our own cells, replicating as new cells line the cervix. . It was originally believed that there was an orderly progression of cervical disease from CIN I to CIN II to CIN III and then the development of invasive cervical cancer. Although we now know that is not the case, with the majority of low-grade lesions spontaneously regressing without treatment. Yet, in some cases the grade of CD can worsen. If left untreated, the infection can lead to cervical cancer. The process is usually slow, occuring over several years which is why its very important to attend all cervical screening appointments to detect HPV & prevent sinister cervical changes. . . Now, there are a number of other factors that precede CD. Whilst HPV is considered a necessary factor, many women are HPV positive & do not advance to cancerous cervical changes. . Other associated co-factors are required that may include smoking, long-term oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection, high parity, herpes simplex virus, chlamydia infection, absence of male circumcision, immune suppression as well as nutritional & dietary factors. . There are many lifestyle modifications that can help to prevent the development of cervical dysplasia... . ...Continued in comments... . @jemaine.finlay_naturopath . @vivianesassenstudio See more

02.01.2022 THE FOLATE MAZE // SPINA BIFIDA AWARENESS MONTH . Folic acid is the synthetic (man-made) version of the naturally occurring B vitamin called folate. Its the version we are all familiar with in supplements and in fortified foods, its also the form of folate that most studies have used in the prevention of neural tube defects like spina bifida. . But... . New research and understandings suggest that depending on our genetic makeup, not all of us will respond as well to the synthetic version of folate as others. With this understanding we now have available the more active versions of folate! . So what are these new forms of folate appearing in supplements, research and popular media?? . You can look for these forms on labels: Folinic acid Calcium folinate Levomefolate calcium L-methyl folate 5-MTHF Levomefolic acid . Bit of a minefield, right?! . To be sure you are taking the correct form and correct dose I suggest seeing a qualified Naturopathic practitioner experienced in coaching around MTHFR and methylation to support you through the folate maze! . If you are needing some advice with regards to Folic vs Folate or finding the right supplement for you, pop in and see us! . @nataliepickering_fertility . @jessechamberlinmarble See more

01.01.2022 CERVICAL SCREENING // THE NEW PAP TEST . In December 2017 The two-yearly Pap test was replaced by a five yearly cervical screening test. Its been backed by strong evidence showing its superior effectiveness in predicting cervical cancer risk. . HPV is a common infection that can cause cervical cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. The cervical screening test is performed in exactly the same way as a Pap smear but looks primarily a...t HPV. It tests for 14 oncogenic HPV types, including types 16 and 18 that are responsible for about 77% of cervical cancers in Australia. . HPV testing for cervical screening is more sensitive than cytology (i.e. Pap tests which look for cell changes in the cervix) and detects the potential for progression to high-grade lesions earlier, therefore preventing more cervical cancers. . Results from an Australian clinical trial compared the Pap smear with the HPV test to see which is best at preventing cervical cancer, indicate that the HPV test is far more effective at picking up high-grade abnormalities than the Pap test. . The renewed program uses a so-called traffic-light system to determine a womans risk of developing cervical pre-cancer or cancer. This is determined by her cervical screening test result, previous cervical screening history and the clinical notes on the pathology request form. . Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, routine cervical screening is your best protection. The Cervical Screening Test is expected to protect up to 30% more women. Are you up to date with your cervical screening test? . #cervicalhealthawarenessmonth #cervicalhealth #cervicalcancerawareness . *Ref @jeanhailes / Medical Observer. . @selenthelabel @petit_herb See more
