25.01.2022 N O U R I SH // Y O U R // Y I N . In Chinese medicine winter is the season of stillness, and is yin in nature. Yin is seen as the dark, slow, cold, inward energy. So it makes sense that diet and lifestyle in winter should nourish the yin. Winter is a time to slow down and feed ourselves both physically and spiritually. . Many day to day activities can help us nourish our yin:... Get plenty of sleep Limit screen time Slow down, avoid rushing Surround yourself with people you love Be in nature every day BREATHE Meditate Practice Yin yoga . Eat foods that warm and nourish the body: Warm food and drinks Root vegetables and whole grains Broth & Soups Small amounts of meat and fish Beans & nuts Slow cooked stews Smoothies Vege juices . A perfect yin nourishing meal is slow cooked rice congee. Throw it all in the slow cooker at bedtime and enjoy it for a nourishing breakfast, lunch or dinner . Ingredients & Method Add to the slow cooker: 3cm grated ginger, 4-6 garlic cloves chopped, 5 cups of bone broth, 5 cups of water, 1 cups brown rice . Optional: you can add 500g chicken thighs quartered (or add some roast pumpkin when serving for a vegetarian option). Cook on low for 8 hours. . 23.01.2022 I see so many WOMEN doing it all WRONG! . With the explosion in awareness about the health benefits of #intermittentfasting (IF) and #timerestrictedfeeding (TRF), it seems more and more people are turning to this as the holy grail in longevity, weight loss, and metabolic health. I have a couple issues with this and how it specifically applies to women...... You see, most of the research done on the health benefits of IF and TRF are done on males - and women are NOT just tiny men...our physiology is different. The way that we respond to fasting will be different due to the very nature of our feminine body's and how we are hard-wired. When you go without food for longer than 14-16 hours your "stress response" is initiated. As your body starts to sense food deprivation it starts initiating the release of hormones that will benefit your survival. Women are more sensitive to these 'survival signals' then men are. It is an evolutionary gift that has been passed down from our cavemen-grandmothers. The women of the tribe need to be more sensitive to stress because their body needs to be finely-tuned-in to know when it is safe to bring the next generation into the world - the survival of the species relys on us! When there are threats to survival (like in a famine) it is not a good time to have a baby ...so women need to be equipped with super sensitive stress detectors. So, when a woman goes without food (like in IF or RTF) her body will respond differently to a mans. Due to a lack of research, we don't know for sure what these differences mean for sure...but I can tell you that based on my clinical experience, there are a few subtle changes that can make the world of difference and ensure that my female clients reap the rewards of this simple and often effective health strategy. Based off my experience here are my top tips for women who want to play with IF or TRF (especially if you have a stressed out stress response)... Cont. in comments... See more

23.01.2022 Want to know whats special about WATERMELON on your fertility journey? ENHANCED MICROCIRCULATION ... Following on from the IMPLANTATION SUPPORT SERIES. So....Whats the big deal about microcirculation? and specifically for this series, uterine perfusion ( the amount of blood that flows through the small blood vessels in the uterus ). ~ To be sure you are building a lush, receptive lining, youll want to know you have an excellent supply of nutrients and hormones and excellent removal of toxins and metabolic breakdown products. To gain that supply and removal you need optimal circulation. ~ It is often assumed your circulation is good, sadly this is not always the case. ~ The focus today is on an amino acid that helps you build nitric oxide (NO), the NO works to open up blood vessels- excellent for microcirculation! Its called Citrulline. ~ Citrulline is believed to be superior to arginine in NO production, research recently suggests that citrulline supplementation is more effective than arginine supplementation in enhancing your bodys arginine supply. ~ So, where to find citrulline! Watermelon Pumpkin Cucumber Gourds Bitter Melon ~ Head out today to grab a gorgeous fresh watermelon and add it to salads, or make it a delish dessert with the addition of a variety of berries (also great for microcirculation). ~ Id love to see what you come up with! 21.01.2022 H O W . D O . Y O U . E A T . T H E M ? --- Bananas are a stable in our house (they have been a favourite since infancy), but did you know that you could be discarding one of the most health beneficial parts of the banana? .... It may be worth re-considering how you eat your humble banana as the skin is where the most beneficial goodness is at! This may sound weird, but eating the skin of your banana can be a healthy way to boost the nutritional benefits of the banana and get in some extra health boosting bits. . The banana peel contains higher levels of vitamin B6 and C, potassium and magnesium than the flesh. But it also contains a good daily dose of resistant starch (RS), a dietary starch that 'resists' digestion in the small intestine. This type of starch is important in supporting a healthy gut microbiome and can lead to a wide range of health benefits, including: - Weight loss - Improved liver function (which you need for fat loss) - Stabilised blood sugar levels - Improved Insulin sensitivity - Reduced hunger - The repair of metabolic syndrome - Enhanced gut health including a healthier gut microbiome - Improved fat utilisation - Reduced fat storage - Improved muscle mass - Reduced cholesterol levels --- So, why wouldn't you want to try it? --- Resistant starch is something I recommend to my patients - especially the ones looking for weight loss. But if banana peels are not your jam, you can also find it in foods like - beans, lentils, potatoes (especially high when cooked and cooled), avocado, and quinoa. . Wanna know the best way I incorporate banana peel into my diet...stay tuned...I have a recipe to share... . . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath . @kailaelderd See more
21.01.2022 J U S T . A ( N O T H E R ) . S N A C K ? Spending more time at home and on a roller-coaster of emotions has left me standing in front of the fridge/pantry more often than I should. . So, I wrote a BLOG for you (and me) that covers my top techniques to AVOID EXCESSIVE SNACKING (part 1) and HOW TO SNACK CORRECTLY...I hope it helps you (coz I know that I sure needed to read it back to myself! )... Link is in our bio - or head to http://melissahohaia.com/blog . I cover all the best approaches to snacking so that you can stay on track with your weight loss goals during these challenging times. . There are a few main things to keep in mind: Make sure your snack will keep you satisfied for at least a couple hours - eating calorie rich, empty snacks will NOT be your friend. Use protein to buffer the carbohydrates and sugars - for example combining some apple slices with a nut butter is on-point! Watch your portions - snacks should be roughly around 200 Calories so keep them small and under wraps. When all else fails, eat vegetables - finding yourself hungry throughout the day? Bust out the vegetables to ward off the unnecessary snacking or try using vegetables as snacks - you can't go wrong with cut up veggIe sticks (carrot, celery, cucumber, capsicum, snow peas, and broccoli are some of my faves). Stay away from the drinks - they count too! If you are sipping on soft drinks, juices, milky coffees, or chia lattes throughout the day, then you could be destroying all your other efforts. Water is your best bet - drink it frequently and regularly. . What are your life-saving snacks at the moment? or Are you struggling with staying on track with your health goals? I'd love to help...I'm only a message away... x . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath . . . @marley.justus See more

21.01.2022 D E S P E R A T E // D I E T E R I started seeing Mel 3 years ago as a desperate dieter. Over the 10 years prior I had tried almost every diet and exercise regime to achieve weight loss results and would constantly compare myself to others who didnt have to scrutinise every calorie. In working with @melissa.hohaia.naturopath , I learnt that my absence of results wasnt from my lack of trying and the validation of this alone was go...lden! Mel coordinated tests to understand my needs and implemented some key hormonal supports and lifestyle changes. We learnt as we went by listening to my body and the results it generated. I wont lie it was hard to let go of control at times, but the journey was so much more than physical! It was not overnight success that I achieved. But more importantly, I no longer wanted overnight success because I understood the changes I needed to make and why. In partnership with Mel I was able to achieve healthy weight loss, address my PCOS and fertility conditions and finally understood how important it is to show yourself kindness! Mels passion is contagious and I am so glad that I found her! - Shannon.C. 21.01.2022 NATIONAL INFERTILITY AWARENESS WEEK ( I know this is on the North American, Canadian calendar not the Australian, but unfortunately the issue is shared worldwide:) ) . There are somewhere in the region of 50 million people worldwide struggling with infertility, and yet its still a taboo subject. .... There is so much loneliness, hopelessness, despair and grief amongst couples trying to conceive their babies AND such courage, strength, determination and persistence to keep trying. . The journey is a private one for the majority of couples as most don't share their struggles with their support network. . Poor awareness is worsening the isolation, the stress and despair of infertility. We need to open up the conversation to create better assessment, better support, better encouragement and empowerment. . The majority of couples diagnosed with infertility have not been thoroughly assessed and often are given little understanding of the root cause of their fertility issues. They rarely receive the support and strategies to manage and overcome the root causes of their fertility obstacles. Without a complete understanding and a personalized approach to boost fertility many will continue to struggle. . We need to open up the conversation so that it becomes mainstream to spend 6 months preparing for conception. Using this time to gain fertility awareness and discover if their are any areas of concern. Addressing imbalances or obstacles before the pressure to conceive begins. I know this approach would save so many couples and individuals heartache and despair. . Do you agree? Give me a YES in the comments. @nataliepickering_fertility See more
20.01.2022 ACNE// For those who've had or currently have acne, I get it. After coming off the pill in my early 20's I struggled with my skin for years. I understand the countless dollars & frustrations. It seriously puts patience to the ultimate test & any sense of confidence to rest. I work with many women who have tried "everything". But in reality the "everything" is only well marketed topical products & abrasive treatments, without result.... Acne is an inside job! Save those pennies & redirect your investment to inner health. 5 common reasons underlying acne: 1. Gut Health: Initially thought to only reside in the skin, C. Acnes bacteria is located in the gut to, bringing to light the significance of the Gut-Brain-Skin Axis. 2. Dairy: Dairy drives Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a pathway linked to increased production & exacerbation of acne. 3. Environment: Airborne pollutants, whilst clogging pores with toxic particles, also oxidises squalene in the pores. The result, a reduced oxygen environment that the C. Acnes Bacteria thrive in! 4. Hormones: High androgens & insulin resistance are 2 hormonal factors that simultaneously contribute to acne, particularly in the case of PCOS. 5. Barrier function: With the new wave of peels, acids, exfoliants & other active abrasives I see more than ever inflammatory acne in result of barrier breakdown. Whilst the cosmetic industry captures the market for 'squeaky clean' skin, in many cases barrier protection is stripped, exposing immature skin cells to the environment, as well as triggering excessive sebum production to compensate for stripped oils. Many other factors come in to play, but the main message remains - skin is a refection of health within! @jemaine.finlay_naturopath @christydawn See more

18.01.2022 H O P E + F E R T I L I T Y Research has shown you can increase your chances of conceiving by up to 50% simply by having positive expectations. By staying hopeful, you give yourself a huge advantage The British Medical Journal published a study where women who had difficulty conceiving were taught to replace their negative mindset and thoughts about their chances of getting pregnant with positive beliefs that they COULD and WOUL...D get pregnant and have a baby. Half of them became pregnant, whereas, in the control group who were given the standard advice, only one in five became pregnant. Positive expectation increases your chance of becoming pregnant from 20% to 50% . Positive expectation releases positive endorphins and neurotransmitters in the body which can give you a huge advantage. Visualize your positive. Imagine your baby in your world and your arms. I know it's hard. I know you work SO hard to manage expectations & protect yourself on this emotional rollercoaster. But, you may be doing more harm than good with this approach. Let's get pregnant faster with optimism, excitement, and hope. Let go attachment to the "how" and "when". I deeply believe the creation of a family is a spiritual journey. Your baby will choose their "how and when" and your baby needs you to choose patience, hope & faith" . Positive emotions- a positive couple in body, mind, and soul- will increase your chances by as much as 50-55%. PLUS you have your cheerleaders at Floralia Wellness by your side. 16.01.2022 PERIOD TALK // We have an incredibly empowering collective of women working together here at Floralia. What I think makes us so great is that were all extremely passionate in our own unique areas of womens health. Me? Im passionate about menstrual awareness & post-pill rehab. Im not an anti-pill activist, but I am pro informed consent. I'm pro body awareness & feel its important to understand the advantage we have as women to have... a period. After all, its our 5th vital sign, and as period revolutionist @larabriden terms, our monthly report card. As women & role models we have to examine our own relation with being a menstruater. There's an incredibly misinformed message being passed down to youth that This is something that youre going to have to live with & itll be a huge pain in your ass! Its a common assumption that PMS is normal, heavy/ painful periods are something to endure, and menstruating is uncomfortable & embarrassing. Can we teach young women what a healthy period is? How diet & lifestyle dramatically affect the menstrual experience, and how to prevent the need for fertility solutions in the future? Can we teach them that its not okay to accept what many women have - that pain & discomfort is an inevitable fate of womanhood? ABSOLUTELY! The shift starts with us being informed about our own body to then have the information to pass on to our daughters. It takes courage to voice uncertainty around a topic that weve been taught to keep silent. Can we admit in our 30s that we just dont know what a period should be like? And to who? It takes us women, as a collective, to fall in love with our body & acknowledge the magic of being a woman. In doing so, we undermine any background noise that teaches young women to brace themselves & start a conversation that favors lifelong health. Lets make a big deal about periods! @jemaine.finlay_naturopath @lovekins_australia See more

13.01.2022 IMPLANTATION AND INFLAMMATION . Inflammation is actually a fundamental part of successful implantation. . When a fertilized egg enters the uterus, the first step required for successful implantation is the attachment of the egg to the surface of the uterus. This attachment relies on inflammatory changes. .... The problem is NOT the short lived, programmed inflammatory changes. . Its when inflammation becomes CHRONIC that we see an increase in implantation failure and in recurrent miscarriage. . So, how to find out if this could be affecting your implantation success - . There are several conditions specific to your reproductive system that increase or develop as a result of chronic inflammation - Endometriosis Fibroids and Ovarian cysts Ashermanns Adenomyosis PCOS Pelvic Inflammatory Disease . There are also other signs and symptoms outside of your reproductive organs that can indicate chronic inflammation and may be a sign of implantation issues - Body pain Constant fatigue Depression, anxiety and mood disorders Brain fog Constipation, diarrhoea and reflux Weight gain Frequent infections . If any of these signs or symptoms sound familiar and you are concerned about your implantation success it may be time to investigate further. There are 2 blood test that can confirm the presence of chronic inflammation - hsCRP and ESR. These 2 blood tests are simple and inexpensive to run, and definitely worth checking on. . 08.01.2022 . S T R E S S . I M P A C T S . O V U L A T I O N (& not in a good way.) . As women, we thrive on ovulation. It has been said that regular ovulation is like a deposit into the bank account of ur health (@larabriden) - the more regularly a woman ovulates the better her long term health is. ... Every time a woman ovulates, weather or not she is focused on her fertility, it is a time to be celebrated...the hormonal benefits of ovulation promote muscle gain, blood sugar regulation, better bone health, lowered inflammation, improved immune function, optimal thyroid health, better mood stability, & long term benefits (like prevention of stroke, osteoporosis, dementia, heart disease, breast cancer, & metabolic disease). Not only is OVULATION a 'creator' of good health, it is also a 'predictor' of good health. This is because when u are looking after ur body in the ways it needs, u will find that ovulation arrives perfectly timed month after month, without effect or discomfort. . Even though we need ovulation for more than making babies, it is ultimately all ur body is concerned about. This is why when u are stressed, ovulation can get shut down. . U see, the last thing ur body wants to do is bring a baby into the world if there is a threat to survival. Ur female body is programmed to be highly sensitive to stress - it is how u are wired. It is natures way of making sure that u are tuned in to procreate and care for the future generations when it is appropriate. . Ur whole reproductive system is a 'non-essential' system for survival - it is expendable, unlike ur other systems (think respiratory, circulatory, digestive etc.)...this is also why it gets shut down during times of stress. If ur body has gotten the message that it needs to prioritise ur survival then it will put all of it's energy into just keeping u alive - the production & balance of oestrogen & progesterone are not a concern anymore. . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath @handmadelingen See more
07.01.2022 SOIL & SERATONIN// . For those of you that know me, know I love getting dirty in the garden! Hanging with my four chooks (Queenie, Evie, Polly & Fang) and pottering in my veggie patch. . Not only is gardening a therapeutic activity, that brings joy every time you successfully grow something! There is also a biochemical process that takes place promoting the production of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. ... . Breathing in the smell of fresh soil and getting your hands dirty exposes us to a bacteria found in soil called Mycobacterium vaccae. Exposure to this bacteria has been found to trigger the release of serotonin in our brain. . It has also been found that when we see the produce in our garden, smell it and harvest it, our brain releases dopamine. A neurotransmitter that promotes a sense of bliss or euphoria. . A systematic review of the positive mental health effects of gardening found participants in all studies had reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improved emotional, social, vocational, physical and spiritual wellbeing. . Just like humans, soil has a microbiome, which is good for us!, particularly for children. Childhood exposure to outdoor microbes is linked to a strong immune system and lower cases of allergies and asthma. . 05.01.2022 My (not so) secret ingredient... In my previous post I explored the benefits of eating your banana peels - if you missed it go back and check it out... . Every banana (peel and all) contains around 10-30mg of a substance called 'resistant starch', which is enough of a daily dose to get all the beautiful health benefits - including weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, and regulated appetite (just to name a few).... . I have found a delicious way to ingest this serve of resistant starch without detection - and I reckon you will love it. . The trick is to buy organic, wash it well and then cut up the whole banana in chunks (peel still on) and put it in the freezer. . Then the next time you make your smoothie, grab a few whole banana chunks and blend it up - you won't even be able to taste it, but your gut bugs, liver, and waist line will thank you for it. --- Wanna know what is in my smoothie??? . It contains: 300ml milk alternative (rice milk, coconut milk etc.) Small handful of ice cubes 2 scoops collagen protein powder 1/2 small avocado 1 handful of spinach 1 tbsp cacao powder 1 small frozen bananna (peel left on) Blend until smooth. There you have it. --- I'd love to know what you think? . . @melissa.hohaia.naturopath See more

03.01.2022 Want to know what's special about WATERMELON on your fertility journey? ENHANCED MICROCIRCULATION ... Following on from the IMPLANTATION SUPPORT SERIES. So....What's the big deal about microcirculation? and specifically for this series, uterine perfusion ( the amount of blood that flows through the small blood vessels in the uterus ). ~ To be sure you are building a lush, receptive lining, you'll want to know you have an excellent supply of nutrients and hormones and excellent removal of toxins and metabolic breakdown products. ~ Citrulline is believed to be superior to arginine in NO production, research recently suggests that citrulline supplementation is more effective than arginine supplementation in enhancing your body's arginine supply. ~ I'd love to see what you come up with!
