My early times when I was personally trained one on one with Grand Master Antonio Tatang Ilustrisimo. He asked me what I wanted to learn. I requested that he focused ONLY on the techniques and strategies he would personally use in combat. This video is a distillation of that teaching. My sole purpose was the create a course whereby the attendee will have a complete understanding of the fundamentals and SUBTLETIES of the Kalis Ilustrisimo System. All Filipinos Martial Arts are similar in nature. It is the interpretation to the subtlety of movement that identifies their characteristics. In this video. I have summarised the ESSENCE of Kalis Ilustrisimo into just SEVEN core movements. These are:- 1. The Jab (Bagsak-A trademark vertical strike) 2. The Thrust 3. Circular Strike 4. 20.01.2022 A review I just received regarding my online videos. Thank you Josh Gibbons for the kind and encouraging words ................ Bottom line up front---Ray's instructional videos are the next best thing to training with Ray (if you are willing to put in the work), and in my experience, his teachings and combative concepts have proven to be effective during sparring. I have been studying and teaching martial arts, combatives, and personal defense for over 20+ years...my en...tire adult life thus far. My martial education started in the military and has transitioned into civilian life. Because of my military background, I believe in solo training as much as training with partners/instructors. I have put the time in and have studied and explored many martial methods and systems. I began getting Ray's videos in the beginning of 2020--a very good decision considering the lockdowns and forced closing of group training. Personally, even when what Ray is teaching is similar or the same as to what I already do I still find a lot of value in the instruction itself and the details in how to teach the material...not just how to do it. I buy Ray's videos as much to learn how to teach the material as to learn new material. And then things like his Essential Kalis Ilustrisimo is such a game changer for me in how to use long knife /short swords efficiently and combatively, and how some of the combative movements and concepts could be used across different weapon systems. The best part is when I do train with others, we always spar. Everyone I train with noticed that I moved differently once I really incorporated the concepts from Ray's teachings. Since I was also successful in my methods, nobody questions my weirdness. 18.01.2022 JUST GOT THIS EMAIL........ I withheld his name to protect his military identity I hate Ray Floro.... I hate his hipster glasses that make him look smart. I hate how fast he moves. I hate how he flows from move to move and works deception into every attack. I hate how he makes complex patterns and concepts seem so simple. Most of all I hate how much he continues to evolve and develop his game while the rest of us seem to stand still trying to keep up and get to where he was. With all that said let me get onto the actual review: DAMN!! This micro course hit me harder than a form and duct tape boffer launched straight into the face cage followed by maniacal laughter. "Why?" you ask? It's probably because I didnt have any expectations Id learn much from this course. Not being too big headed but I'm no stranger to seeing decent blade material including Rays "Essential" DVDs from a few years back. I choose one of the KI specific courses from his material specifically to watch en passant because I didnt want to dive into his new knife or full KI material yet. Get the thrust one first I thought that way I could watch it while doing some other work on the computer and not have to pay much attention. After all what more could Ray have developed on the thrust? I was wrong so damn wrong. First to give some context why I even have an opinion on this worth reading. Although we have been pen pals for years and have common associates Im not a "direct student" of Rays but consider him a mentor of mine in the blade game. As I was developing a program for US Special Forces Ray gave me tons of free advice and helped me to think through what was practical and what wasnt. Although Im a Black Belt in Judo and BJJ my weapons background was VERY limited and ray taught me how to "think" about the blade in ways no one else was teaching. Ive carried knife in combat around the world and a live sword, a barong or ginunting as a combat advisor to the Philippine Marines, Scout Rangers, PNP SAF, and Special Forces across Mindano, Zamboanga, Baslian, and Jolo. Ive trained some in Kendo, PT, and KI and had the honor to meet Tatang back in the Luneta Park days and train with Mang Topher and Tony when they were alive. I even started fencing, using my left hand, wearing Blundstones and listening to Men at Work to try to be more like Ray. With all that said I figured his older work was already the pinnacle of knife/blade work's evolution so why expect anything else? Imagine my surprise then to be so blown away at the material and teaching methodology in the micro course on what I thought was a simple subject I thought I already figured out. What more is there to learn about the thrust you ask? Heres only SOME of what I learned from this short program: -Improved angle for the thrust. -Proper wrist to blade alignment -Injury prevention -Proper grip for thrusting and why he changed his method after HEMA cross training (wow) -How Tatang integrated his thrust with Bagsak -The two types of thrusts from KI and how to combine and integrate them -Vertical and horizontal thrusts -Set ups for the thrust, including The disappearing hand set up which is genius! -Footwork for deception, set ups, and proper distance -How to not telegraph the thrust show from multiple angles -Thrusting to multiple targets in combination -The Push Cut recovery from a missed thrust -Turning the chest thrust into a throat thrust (chest slide) -The bad habit to avoid learning when hand sparring -Self Defense application for the thrust using a ball pen or key -Running the tip around blocks for thrust follow ups and how to train tip control solo And probably tons of other little things I won't pick up until the second or third viewing. So with all that said was the course worth the $20.00? Ive been a Martial Arts nomad my entire life. I started buying instructional material even before Panther Production VHS tapes in the white boxes in the late 80s. How does one value the cost of instruction versus the price of the material? Ive seen various methods used to try to quantify or qualify the worth; cost per move, novel material, production value, on screen graphics, chapter breakdowns, lighting, and multiple camera angles, kick ass porn soundtrack, all seem to make reviews higher for a product. But true to form this course had little to none of those things. However, lacking in the fluff the program DID have what I look for in an instructional... the stuff. As an instructor myself I ask three things from material to determine its value. The first speaks to the take away not the presentation. Did I learn something I can apply to my specific game? This could be direct application techniques wise, or even a drill or concept. The second question speaks to the presentation of the material. Did the instruction and the manner the material was taught make sense? Or did I have to rewind several times and try to figure out what the instructor did or said. Getting the material to "make sense" is sometimes helped by on screen graphics, multiple camera angles, and slow motion. Or sometimes, like in this case, all it takes is a good instructor. And the last question speaks to the cost. After seeing the entire course would I buy it again? Was the juice worth the squeeze? The answer to all three of these questions was an overwhelming YES. I dont know the last time Ive picked up as much game changing material in a single course but this is the depth that Ray brings. So what would I have liked to see that wasnt in the course? Id say for the money the course was an absolute steal. However, since I'm greedy, Id have also loved to see some sparring footage with examples of the concepts live in action sparring. Rays teaching method and the format of the course is very much like a one on one private class. However, like in a private class you dont get to learn by watching others getting hit with the technique. I have no doubt that everything presented is battle tested and sparring validated many times over. But still would love to see clips of Ray hitting the moves in sparring even if was just in informal sessions against his students. Other than that I wouldn't add or change anything. So in closing I recommend no one else buys this course. Please dont. I want these awesome techniques to remain as secret for as long as possible. Ray is giving far too much away for nothing and I cant charge my future students hundreds of dollars for private classes as long as Ray keeps giving away the secrets for free. I hate Ray Floro because as much as I dont want to I am now forced to buy the rest of his impressive online content course after course just to make sure he isnt doing the same with his other way underpriced programs. Thanks for changing my game again Kuya Ray, you continue to amaze me.
