25.01.2022 Getting my mask on while I warm up for my morning run. Glad to see others doing the same! #wearamask #covid19 #letsbeatcovid19

25.01.2022 Even small businesses can help employees to thrive by identifying and leveraging their #strengths. I was lucky enough to be interviewed for this article recently (reproduced here with the kind permission of Engage Media).

23.01.2022 Love this! You are hereby authorized to screw up, bomb, or fail at a relationship, a project, a test, or any other initiative that seems hugely important and still be a totally worthy, utterly excellent human being. https://goo.gl/3Cz3po

20.01.2022 I love this Engaged Feedback Checklist by Brene Brown. In her book Daring Greatly, she says "Vulnerability is at the heart of the feedback process. This is true whether we give, receive or solicit feedback. And the vulnerability doesn't go away, even if we're trained and experienced in offering and getting feedback. Experience does, however, give us the advantage of knowing that we can survive the exposure and uncertainty, and that it's worth the risk."

20.01.2022 This article neatly sums up a number of leadership behaviours that have featured in (far too) many of my conversations lately. The author describes these traits as uncommon. What do you think? How many of these behaviours have you seen consistently demonstrated by leaders? According to the article, people with true leadership skills... #1 - Pay attention to their people... #2 - Provide their people with purpose and a sense of belonging #3 - Model radical transparency #4 - Ask their people "Is there anything I can do for you?" #5 - Create psychological safety. Which ones get your vote as most important? #transparency #leadership #psychologicalsafety #purposedriven #consciousleadership #psychology

19.01.2022 Lately I’ve been intentionally doing things that involve pushing outside my comfort zone - just 'putting myself out there' to see what happens. These things probably don't seem brave or 'out there' to others, but they do to me. So it seemed timely that I happened across this book right as the discomfort started to grow. It has been great in reflecting on my own experience. And as a bonus, I've now got some great frameworks to use in my coaching and leadership development pr...actice. In the spirit of the book I decided to write about some of my personal and professional takeaways in this article. Can you relate to any of them?

18.01.2022 I've read a couple of articles lately aimed at helping leaders to tackle negative self-talk, anxiety, rumination, and feelings of 'imposter syndrome'. While each included some helpful strategies, in my view there was far too strong an emphasis on the following: - Challenging or refuting negative thoughts (e.g. identifying errors in your own thinking) - Distracting yourself from negative thoughts (e.g. occupying your mind with something else) - Using positive affirmations (e....g. encouraging thoughts or mantras aimed at making you feel better). As pointed out in this (much more helpful) article by Susan David, in many cases these strategies simply don't work. In fact, as she rightly points out, "ample research shows that attempting to minimize or ignore thoughts and emotions serves only to AMPLIFY them". We can't control or stop the inner stream of thoughts and feelings that run through our minds. This is actually our minds trying to do their job (trying to protect us from threats, real or otherwise). I've found the practices shared in this article to be much more pragmatic and helpful for clients - helping them to notice, accept and "unhook" from challenging thoughts and feelings while simultaneously acting in alignment with their values. It is definitely worth a read!

17.01.2022 Have you ever been in that situation where you are catching up with someone for a 1-1, but the other person doesn't seem to be really to you? They might be nodding their head or making eye contact, but it's obvious that their mind is elsewhere Or even worse - they are clearly just waiting for you to finish talking so they can jump in with THEIR thoughts and ideas. ... Right now, listening is more important than ever. How can you create some time today to really 'be' with someone, and listen to whatever they need to say? #listening #empathy #leadership

15.01.2022 Some simple and not-so-simple (but important!) strategies for reducing two major challenges to our ability to focus - smart devices and meetings. https://goo.gl/o3NzqE

14.01.2022 In my opinion, this LinkedIn post from Richard Fryer provides some refreshing insights on addressing common barriers to leadership effectiveness. What I love most is the recognition that it isn't just about 'faking it until you make it' - but instead using well-backed psychological principles that incorporate the human element of leadership.

14.01.2022 An interesting read by Daniel Goleman and colleagues about the links between mindfulness and the emotional intelligence competencies, particularly emotional self-awareness.

13.01.2022 I love the examples of implementing small, yet effective triggers for change in this article...

12.01.2022 This article outlines 3 practical applications of positive psychology within workplaces. It's a fairly good and quick read, with the exception of getting researcher Carol Dweck's name wrong!

10.01.2022 Already loving the candid insights in The Advice Trap By Michael Bungay Stanier... This page? What you are really saying (at at least implying) when you consistently feel as though you need to give the answers (Tell It), make sure others don't fail (Save It) or take over so nothing goes wrong (Control It). All of which lead your advice 'monster' to come out, of course. Very relatable, don't you think? #leadership #coaching #conversationsthatmatter

10.01.2022 Some tips from Susan Cain for leaders who have a more introverted temperament and are keen to demonstrate what is often labelled as "executive presence". In particular, I love her observations about speaking from a place of passion and conviction, and remembering that presence is largely about truly 'showing up' for others (not hogging the spotlight!). #presence #leadership #authenticity #introverts

09.01.2022 It’s hard to teach [resilience] techniques to someone who’s already under tremendous stress. It’s important to have the programs in place, so when employees do begin to feel challenged, they have options for resources to turn to. This article includes some suggestions that seem obvious, but often require significant cultural and behavioural change to truly implement... https://goo.gl/NXKK1m

05.01.2022 I'm looking forward to chatting with some interesting people on this panel next week - part 2 of an online meetup series exploring #careerchange! Feel free to share or tag with any women in tech who might find it valuable #womenintech #womenintechnology #careerpivot

03.01.2022 I wrote this article a while ago with the aim of helping organisations to handle redundancies with compassion, respect, and an understanding of the 'human' element. Given some of the stories I've heard lately regarding the execution of redundancies, I (sadly) feel compelled to share it again...

03.01.2022 Many years ago I knew a leader who would check their emails 5-6 times during every conversation, making me feel as though they weren't really 'present'. Some great advice in this article about truly engaging with others. https://goo.gl/SZHD94

02.01.2022 Totally agree with this article - if I waited until I had enough 'bandwidth' to start a mindfulness practice, it would never happen! https://goo.gl/46n2cA

01.01.2022 I stumbled across this article while doing some research - it lists 20 common 'blindspots' held by senior leaders (according to the author of the book being referenced). I can definitely see several themes that arise in my own work with leaders ... what do others think? https://goo.gl/vtF7kM
