14.01.2022 Life lessons 101. Learn to surf the waves of your emotions and watch as they rise and subside like the ocean's waves, it's pointless to fight them or push them away. Rather practice to ride them, be with them, notice them. And as you begin to observe, a distance is created and the emotional charge eases.... in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) this is called defusion... defusing ourselves from the emotion or the thought. We are not our thoughts, we are not our emoti...ons, we can watch our thoughts and we can watch our emotions..... 14.01.2022 So true. And a timely remember that you can choose what you think. You may not be able to control the thoughts that come in willy, nilly, out of seemingly no where, but you can redirect your thoughts. You can 'circuit break' them and chose to think of something else. You might have a distraction (a healthy one) that you use when you need to, to shift the dial to something pleasant rather than suffering in something miserable. The mind can only focus on one thing at a time and you can choose what that is - it can take some practice to become more aware of automatic thoughts and to notice them. Mindfulness practice helps this as we cultivate the ability to stay in the present moment, or come back to the present moment. #flourishmindfully #johnmilton #chooseyourthoughts

14.01.2022 That niggle, that problem, that old bug bear, 'that old chestnut'.. It's going to stick around until you learn the lesson, make the change, for it to have no place in your life anymore... when it is no longer needed. Remember you don't need to do it all on your own and you don't need to have a mental disorder to seek help. Counsellors and psychotherapists, and coaches can help you explore and work through these challenges you decide you no longer want to live with. If it b...others you it matters to you and if it matters to you it is a big deal for you... so know you don't need to keep 'putting up with it'. You can get help. 02.01.2022 In meditation we practice training the mind to focus, and we also practice stepping back, and watching as thoughts arise and subside each of these practices support us in not being a servant to the mind, rather the mind is the servant to us. It takes practice and can be in opposition to your default mode that you have been ruled by your mind's whims for so long... it's quite liberating to realise and experience you don't need to be at the mercy of your thoughts, having to ac...t on each and every whim, or to get caught up in them whether through clinging to things, or avoiding others. Rather, look within and without to bring to mind all you have to be happy about and grateful for. You have control over this, whereas there's no control over the external conditions - the weather, someone's behaviour..... ... And remember you can change your mental state by changing your thoughts about things. Thich Nhat Hanh's words of wisdom align with the Cognitive Behavioural Model of psychology whereby what you think affects how you feel and how you act.
