"the goal then is not some fixed, cured state where we have successfully purged an aspect of our self-experience from what we are, as if it were some wretched foreign substance, but rather to find a larger home for it within us. Slowly, we can allow what has become frozen and solidified to thaw and become flexible. Perhaps, when all is said and done, it is love that will soften the wounds of the body and the heart, for they will never unwind in an environment of abandonment and aggression. Its just not safe or majestic enough there."

22.01.2022 thanks Know You Are Earth! Absolutely beautiful. For most of a year, Jenny and I visited Cherry Tree every month and mapped our bird sits for our FLOAT almanac.... At home, my little wattlebird greets me in the driveway when I come back from work, and the wee birds tell me when the hobby is around (if I listen). In clinic, having windows open allows the birds to help regulate the sessions when clients are processing deep trauma. There is so much to be gained by building relationship with the morethanhuman world around us. Its whats been smashed out by colonialism/capitalism, but its so deeply a part of us, that it doesnt take long to find threads again, and the joy that comes with it. and Maryjane is offering an online training/workshop series, if youre interested. 16.01.2022 It was certainly part of my own healing and finding new belonging, and the way it satisfies the polyvagal social nervous systems need for safety is quite phenomenal. I didnt know that at the time, just trusted my instinct. which is the best bit :)

14.01.2022 For many years Ive been following the wisdom of the 8 Shields Mentoring and Nature Connection movement, but only a couple of weeks ago did I finally get to go on a workshop with Jon Young. My instinct has always been that what hes talking about is the outside-the-skin complement to our internal work with cranio. And as one of the first things he started with was Vagus, I settled in for a week of deep recognition. Cranio restores our bodies to be able to be in effective relationship with what the Lakota call "all our relations" - our environment. and tracking is a powerful example of that dance of relationship.

13.01.2022 thanks to Steve Haines for finding this article. Note that she started only being able to do 10 minutes, under supervision. For many people, tracking body sensations and knowing when to stop is challenging in a group exercise, but that doesnt negate the benefits if your instructor knows that youll need breaks.

11.01.2022 from my walks this week: a neuro thing. if you navigate by the stars, you maintain wide and long vision, you remain aware of your surroundings and the long range view. maybe you even remain cognisant of the impacts of your chosen direction into the distant future. if you navigate by GPS, your reference point is close and in your own space only. ... no need to have any awareness of the impacts of your decisions on anyone else, human or otherwise. tunnel vision is promoted, self interest. oblivious to the relationships, the connection, the context. so look up. orient yourself in space every time you go outside. and go outside often. :) See more

10.01.2022 yes yes and yes. slowing down and allowing yourself to feel the ramifications of what it is youre doing across all systems and into the future. you could call it Humane Medicine. "Our culture generally treats its environment as a free box with stuff to take. We take something if we want it, without understanding its reciprocal relationships with larger systems. Until recently, medicine has gotten a free pass from the environmental movement. The sacred right of health has tr...umped balance with nature. But then we started noticing things like active drug metabolites in city water systems, and toxic residues from medical waste, for example. We went after pesticides a while ago are we ready to see that our medicines are often not so different from these pesticides? Arent antibiotics (against living things) another kind of pesticide (pest[ilence] killer)? Once the discussion is someones health, we seem to have a shared cultural attitude that these other considerations are off the table. We have automatic catch-phrases to justify what is essentially extremely selfish behavior prompted by a forced urgency to act fast understandable to everyone, but heedless just the same. The worst of it is that were brainwashed by the way were brought up, by advertising, by our friends and family into wanting things that not only are very expensive to the shared environment (not to mention the shared economy), but that also make us and those around us worse off."

07.01.2022 Hello, everyone. Its been a while since I actively used this Page, but that looks likely to change. Today I went to the clinic for the last time to pick up my belongings and hand in my key, because as a touch -based therapist, Ive had to assess the risk vs benefit of breaking the social isolation guidelines for the purposes of helping clients. What Ive decided is that a lot of what I do as a craniosacral therapist, plus the experience Ive had navigating my own trauma and... helping others with theirs, combined with the incredible opportunity for us all to just slow down and use our senses to get deeply connected with whats right around us...is stuff that I can teach online in a zoom kind of way. So my 1-1 craniosacral sessions are now in hibernation, and Im thinking about how to ride this rhythm in a way that can share some of what Ive learnt and taught over the last decade and a bit, thanks to a wide range of mentors and teachers in a variety of fields. Similar to when the fires were bearing down on our communities, if you dont HAVE to be on the roads, or in public, please get out of the way and let the emergency services and the essential services do their thing. Their task is tough enough without us needlessly complicating things. Or in first aid training: the earth, our global systems are going into either shock or hibernation (depending on your preference), pulling back resources into whats actually necessary to keep our organism alive, and reducing flow to peripheral, unnecessary activity. We are part of each other. Its yet another learning curve, but were all on it. So Ill be collating what I know, and working out how to offer it in a good way. Stay tuned, and take care... Hilary.

06.01.2022 i so love this one of those flashpoints between so many things im tracking. rhythm isnt something you impose. its what you listen to and go with, and give e...xpression to. in here is the first world that sal was talking about from the bushmen of the kalahari its cranio chi kung improvisation from the 512 project its accepting the discomfort of your own practise and staying with it, like in jazz, tracking your own rhythm can take you places that suddenly feel out of time, out of step, out of harmony with whats around you, but if you stay the path (with honesty and tenderness, not with heavy machinery of force) the bigger rhythm will show. if you panic and try to go back, you end up in a puddle of self doubt, trying to make yourself fit in a culture not made for you. its being part of the bigger Life. its the art of FLOAT the listening, the movement forms. some people have bristled at why Id want to listen to an american about anything. but i dont care where someone is from. i care about what they embody, what they know, what they model that can help me learn and grow in the places i know im stuck, or the grey areas that no-one in my local culture will even venture a toe and i care whether they have the skills to be my mentor or my beacon. so heres a south african jazz master, who studied a japanese form for 50 years, and he speaks to me... thanks Lumen Natura: Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy and Microbiome and Music to Satisfy Your Inner Jellyfish. 06.01.2022 grok this. makes so much sense. unbroken stimulus wears us out. we shut down once we cant take in any more. while i love people and learning, i NEED time out to integrate or i start getting overwhelmed. but with stimulus and "time-out" in a good rhythm, I feel connected AND rested :) so core routines like a sit spot, or silent walk in nature, or just doing one thing without layers and layers of background noise....i can feel my brain sigh...... learning song arrangements for choir. just cant do it back-to-back. I need time out, and then I can learn (hippocampus). theres a rhythm that works for me, and this study seems to point to why. I love our Body Intelligence Craniosacral Training seminars. yes they are study, but they attend to this rhythm of stimulus-integrate-rest all the way through, and we all end up invigorated as a result. wish more courses were done so skilfully. 8 Shields Mentoring and Nature Connection break it down and teach it intricately so you understand how humans respond to being met well. and where there is trauma, all the more need to attend to this rhythm, closely. 05.01.2022 such good timing. have pre-ordered 3 copies. being shipped today, so i get to see this next book of Steves soon! one for clinic reception one for lending to clients... and one for me. his other two are so useful for helping clients get a clear grounded understanding of whats happening in their biology, saving a LOT of time explaining the basics and correcting mistaken ideas. i have my own project brewing in the background, now, inspired by this series of books.

05.01.2022 It can be hard to explain to people what I do and why its not the same as x, y and z. Im so grateful that practitioners continually explore language to try to convey the truths about what we do. This one from Steve Haines just feels like it nails what it is that I do in my practise. thanks Steve.

05.01.2022 In the current milieu of out of control bushfires and drought, exhausted firefighters and really really divisive conversations in the media, its worth looking at why were not finding resolution, and how we can alter our own neurochemistry away from the reactive and into something more wholesome and productive.

03.01.2022 Steve Haines new blog on meeting pain, being creative, not being attached to any one "golden rule", even letting go of long held practices if theyre not serving. And seeing how "danger" (to your nervous system) can be in unexpected situations. I just (this morning) cottoned onto one example for me, thats been so much a fabric of my personality that I didnt ever recognise it as an adaptation to danger.

01.01.2022 I had to laugh the other day, when a client pulled me up on a word I was using to describe what I felt: "fuller". She said something is either full or its not. So I said its heading in the direction of being more full than it was. Fuller. My playfulness and lack of judgement with language is reflective of the playfulness and lack of expectation when I meet a body, and that is a huge part of what allows for profound change.... "The practitioner is being receptive to the unfo...lding narrative of the body system and may find themselves using words that sound more like an artists description of texture or a wine tasters description of bouquet. We have become a league of watchers and feelers that are sampling, co-experiencing, and truly touching the clients body. We are no longer bringing an agenda.
