19.01.2022 The erector spinae muscles lie parallel on either side of the spine, running alongside the cervical, thoracic & lumbar sections. Their function is to extend, laterally flex and aid in rotation of the back. They are important posture muscles that are predominantly active in most daily activities. Dry needling actively assists the body by inducing a local biochemical change that promotes healing, helping to improve movement and reduce recovery time. Here we have Dry Needling o...f the erector spinae muscles, which was used in conjunction with joint mobilisation, myofascial soft tissue release and muscle energy techniques (METs) to reduce muscle tone, improve thoracic range of movement and decrease pain. #dryneedling #myotherapy #musculoskeletaltherapy #flowmyotherapy #brisbane #brisbanemyotherapy #paddington #jointmobilisation #muscleenergytechniques #backpain #thoracicmobility

13.01.2022 When your work comes home with you... So often I catch myself out in the wild assessing random peoples gait (manner of walking) for dysfunctional movement patterns. A person's gait is a complex mix of nervous, musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems. We can tell a lot about an individuals gait pattern, which is influenced by their age, personality, mood and sociocultural factors. ... Abnormal/dysfunctional gait occurs when the body systems that control the way we walk do not function in the proper way. This may happen due to illness, injury, genetic factors or abnormalities in the legs/feet. #gait #myotherapy #flowmyotherapy #musculoskeletaltherapy #brisbanemyotherapy #walking #walkingpattern #dysfunction #gaitpattern #brisbane #health #movement

01.01.2022 Kinesiology & Rigid taping are two therapeutic techniques often used as a protective mechanism in the presence of, or prevention of, sports injuries and a wide variety of other conditions. Taping can have different effects depending on the application method and type of tape used including: Restricting joint range of motion Altering anatomical alignment Cutaneous Stimulation Increasing proprioception... Increasing motor coordination Increasing muscle activation timing Increasing concentric/eccentric control Holding dressing/pad in place Compressing soft tissue from a recent injury Reducing swelling Relieving pain Increasing psychological/placebo effect Rigid Taping involves stiff, strong tape with minor elasticity, frequently used to tape wrists, elbows, ankles, shoulders and knees to reduce unwarranted movement and to provided added stability. Although not guaranteed to prevent injury, this type of taping is often seen in sports players and professional athletes whilst performing physical activity. Kinesiology Taping involves thin, stretchy tape with high elasticity, designed to move with the body whilst not restricting movement, allowing lymphatic and venous systems to move and drain from the body, increasing healing time. Further uses aid joint realignment before, during and post-exercise. Depending on your presenting condition, taping can be often used within Myotherapy treatment to help support and aid your recovery. 01.01.2022 Not All Breathing is Created Equal We are lucky to have two methods of breathing - through the nose & the mouth. Most people, however, are unaware that we are meant to breathe through our noses in all but a few situations, such as when the nostrils are blocked from allergies/sickness & increased levels of physical exertion when our body requires more oxygen. Nasal breathing should be our primary breathing technique due to the many benefits, including:... Protection of the lungs and airways Tiny hairs called cilia and mucosa that line the nasal cavity, which filter out small potentially harmful bacteria such as allergens & microbes before they can enter the respiratory tract. Furthermore, the nose also warms & humidifies the air, ensuring it does not damage the lungs or airway. Regulating oxygen and carbon dioxide levels Nasal breathing maintains the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels as we breathe. When we mouth breathe, we release too much carbon dioxide, resulting in the lungs lacking proper absorption of oxygen, thus altering our breathing rate which can lead to light-headedness & hyperventilation. Releasing of Nitric Oxide The paranasal sinuses create Nitric Oxide, which is a vasodilator, facilitating the expansion of blood vessels, improving blood circulation, lowering blood pressure, boosting the body’s immune system & numerous other health-related issues correlated with blood flow. Improving diaphragm control Nasal breathing forces the activation of the diaphragm to expand the lungs & draw in air, which has shown to have many positive health benefits. Mouth breathing promotes shallow chest breathing, which puts increased strain on the accessory muscles in the neck & shoulders. Improving parasympathetic tone Diaphragmatic nasal breathing also stimulates the Vagus nerve, the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system. Improving vagal tone has shown to improve mood, health & wellbeing by decreasing stress, anxiety & promoting relaxation. #flowmyotherapy #myotherapy #brisbanemyotherapy #musculoskeletaltherapy #vagusnerve #diaphragmaticbreathing #nose #nasalbreathing #health #paddington #brisbane #breathing #diaphram
