22.01.2022 Summer’s here and the pool is calling! HNE Health urges swimmers and swimming pool owners to do their bit to keep pools healthy and prevent any nasty outbreaks ...this season. To protect others, we need to avoid introducing infectious bugs into the swimming pool. If you’ve had diarrhoea in the past two weeks, don’t swim. Highly contagious germs like cryptosporidiosis (a gastro bug), E.coli, shigella and viruses can be spread by people accidentally swallowing contaminated pool water. This causes people to be sick with diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and fever. ‘Crypto’ can survive in swimming pool water for weeks, so don’t take the risk and swim if you’ve recently had it, as this could lead to an outbreak. Unfortunately even the best maintained pools and chemicals alone won't keep a pool safe from this bug. The organism that causes folliculitis and ear infections can also cause outbreaks as it thrives in pools when the water temperature is greater than 26C and when disinfection levels are not maintained at all times. This organism also causes outbreaks in heated spas. Some tips to keep pools healthy this summer: Pool owners - double check your pools are correctly maintained and clean throughout summer. If a pool's chlorine, pH levels or other disinfection system are not maintained properly, the chemicals cannot do their job properly. Pool filters should also be carefully maintained to ensure they are working properly. Don't swallow the pool water and try not to let water into your mouth Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet Don't allow pets in the pool Take children on bathroom breaks often to avoid accidents in the pool For more info and tips on how to stay healthy and enjoy your pools all summer, visit https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//Pages/healthy-swimming-pool

15.01.2022 Today's project! Installing an Acoustic box for pool equipment that will assist with climate protection, noise reduction and aesthetics. Watch this space for the end result. Completed! For this job all equipment had to be reconfigured to allow the acoustic filter box to fit. This reconfiguring also improved water flow and filtration to make the pool "flow right". The reduction in noise is now highly noticeable and the client is as happy as a pig in mud!

12.01.2022 In the last few days I have been asked if COVID-19 will effect people using their Pool or Spas. SPASA Australia CEO, Lindsay McGrath advises: "The purpose of a balanced pool or spa water chemistry is to kill bacteria and viruses. Australian Standard AS 3633-1989: Private swimming pools - Water quality provides clear direction for healthy water. All sanitisation products are regulated through the APVMA and adhere to world best practice."... "The home pool or spa is a healthier place than ever before, and the swimming pool & spa industry is continually offering improved products and services, supporting the health ads wellness of consumers and the community." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no evidence the virus can survive in a properly chlorinated and filtered pool. "There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs," reads a statement on CDC's site. "Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19." In some states, larger pool venues have issued notices of closure, however, this is more to do with social distancing rather than problems of swimming in pool water itself. SPASA recommends that if you're not feeling well or are concerned about potential infection, practice the recommended social distancing guidance from the Government Department of Health and seek assistance from your health professional.
