25.01.2022 On the photo: Early 1900’s, slender Indian males As a slender young male myself, it could be argued that many of the yoga postures today are designed for... my body. But chances are, you look nothing like me or the boys in the image above, which is who a good portion of our yoga postures was designed for! Traditional yoga alignment simply was not intended for and is not suited for many of the bodies practicing yoga asana today. The average yoga practitioner is a middle-aged female. Do you think they are going to feel, move, or have the same structural demands as the boys pictured above? HELL NO! Many yoga postures are defended on the basis of the sacred history of the practice. In reality, most modern asana developed in the 1920s with Krishnamacharya at the Mysore Palace. Prior to this, there were other yoga postures, many to prepare the body for Lotus Pose so you could sit and meditate. I personally do not believe that a lot of modern folks have the ability (or even the need) to practice a full Lotus Pose. What happens when we start assuming our bodies and students into shapes that do not adhere to individual alignment and structure? 12.01.2022 A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a w...hale?" The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way: "Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness. They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia. They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires. Mermaids do not exist. But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish? They would have no sex life and could not bear children. Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad. And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side? Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale. At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends. We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies. We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated. Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! " Do share if you care. Don't forget to share it. www.ladiespassiton.com

11.01.2022 One of the major benefits of sticking with your yoga practice is reduced stress. Yoga can help you cope with your daily life even when you are not on the mat by reducing tension held in the body, helping you sleep better and relieving pain. If you’re thinking of giving a yoga class a try why not come down to class at Soul Space 23 Parker St Newmarket tonight at 6pm and take advantage of our $5 first class pass? http://flowtribeyoga.gettimely.com/

10.01.2022 Dr. Yogi Gare’s neck alignment advice for SU&Y by Garrett Neill Couldn’t help myself with the pun on this week’s shoulder based #techniquetidbit Joke...s aside shoulder pain is quite a common occurrence in both daily life and in yoga. It makes sense too, a lot of the more vigorous styles require a lot of ground movement and loading the shoulder with gravity and body weight There are a lot of folks out there that can’t do a good push up. I’ve found that yogis are especially bad, and yet so many of us insistently teach Chaturangas. So foolish If you can’t do a push up, maybe don’t practice 30 Chaturangas. And if Chata was making your shoulders stronger wouldn’t you be able to do a push up no problem? Another big way people get injured is overhead movement . There are two main ways to reach overhead! In Flexion the humeral head rolls and there is a small degree of upward rotation from the scapula In Abduction the humeral head rolls downward as the shaft moves up causing a lot of upward rotation in the scapula In abduction you use a lot more traps and levator scapula, which may be why that area is always so tense! Try switching it up with Flexion and see if it helps relax the top of your shoulder Also the whole pull your shoulders down cue can we all please stop using it. Peoples shoulders are going to lift naturally with scapular rotation, who are we to come in and tell the body to do something different. When we do we promote impingement and that’s never a fun thing For the record: both Flexion and Abduction are great ways to reach overhead. As always: if it hurts don’t do it or modify Get out there and move mindfully with the proper shoulder strength my friends -Dr YG Check out our 5 Most Common Yoga Injuries book https://shutupandyoga.com/5-most-common-yoga-injuries-book/

03.01.2022 Weekly wisdom from Dr. Yogi Gare - Twisting Basics - Biomechanics Your Spine Will Love Just about everyone enjoys a good spinal twist. Here’s some inf...o on the basic anatomy involved regarding the spine Why do some areas twist more than others in regards to our spine? It’s all about the facet joints. It’s where our vertebra connect, and the way they orient largely governs what movements are limited vs. what works easily This week I’ll share a few of the ways I like to twist. I love a good active and upright spiral-like motion Rotational movement can carry a lot of power, and that’s the feeling I hope you find Read more on twists in our 5 Most Common Yoga Injuries book by Dr. Yogi Gare [https://shutupandyoga.com/book/] #techniquetidbit

03.01.2022 Dr. Yogi Gare’s neck alignment advice for SU&Y by Garrett Neill Neck pain is quite common these days and is something that can be exacerbated or helpe...d by yoga! Biggest factor is head positioning! Hopefully I’m not the first to tell you this: you DO NOT always have to look up I’d even recommend not looking up at your hands most of the time Great cues: Let your head do what it wants Move with your s and not your skull Create a sense of ease & awareness of your head sitting atop your body Your body goes where your head goes too! It’s quite common to flare out your ribs and lose good positioning of your core if you’re hyperextending your head (Deep neck flexors are apart of the Reflexive Core - more on that in the future) Speaking of the #DeepNeckFlexors most folks can benefit from a little strength work there to help that imbalance. I’ll defer you to YouTube but strongly urge you to seek the guidance of a professional (they’re nuanced and not the easiest to properly engage) Final thing and I hope this is common sense: don’t practice headstand, shoulderstand, or plow if your neck hurts or has issues -I’m not one to demonize movement or judge folks, but you’re a damn fool if you don’t listen to your body and perform those with neck issues the only one being served there is your ego and your doctor’s wallet *Us #yogateachers should also be adding that disclaimer if we choose to teach it (or just don’t teach it! ) Hope you enjoyed! This post is not intended to diagnose, just spread some awareness, cultivate consciousness & understanding together we grow smarter, thanks again everyone for sharing last Friday! If you haven’t looked check it, there were some great stories and strategies shared Shameless self plug : I did write about this and back pain & more in depth and with strategies/exercises in my Yoga Injuries ebook for Shut Up & Yoga https://shutupandyoga.com/5-most-common-yoga-injuries-book/
