08.01.2022 Just thought I would share this you tube video on how to brush your long haired dog correctly. There are heaps of you tube videos out there on this topic but I thought this one was one of the better ones. It is American so they refer to oodles as doodles and groodles as golden doodles. You can purchase a slicker brush and metal comb at any pet store or online - it does not need to be expensive. She refers to corn starch to help with removing matts - this is corn powder in Au...stralia and does in fact do a good job. Often people are disappointed that their dog is matted even though they are brushing them every few days. It is most likely due to incorrect brushing technique which leaves the coat matted at the base, but appears matt free on top. This may lead to having to shave your dog when you were hoping to keep the coat at a longer length :( The technique used in this video is called line brushing and ensures that you get the brush right down to the base of the hair. After brushing, the dog is then combed to check that all the matts have been removed. Note that removing matts is often painful and stressful for dogs, which is why groomers will shave a dog rather than spend hours tugging at matts. If your dog is already too matted, please do not attempt to remove the matts, please make an appointment to have them professionally groomed. Also washing a matted dog will make the matts tighter so please do not wash a matted dog.
