21.01.2022 Paul Rabinov has been servicing Lisa-Maree Amos' flutes for over two decades, from when she was living in Los Angeles. On her annual trips from Melbourne to LA, she and Paul frequently talked about organizing an opportunity for flutists in Australia to train in the art of flute repair, particularly as many young players now have professional standard instruments. After finding a suitable time for a visit, Paul then invited Jim Phelan to join him here in Australia. The collect...ed knowledge of repair, instrument making and course design offered here will be extensive and like nothing offered before in Australia. This course is designed for players who want to learn general maintenance and care, and extends to current repairers seeking professional development, and people interested in getting into the profession. 12.01.2022 Paul Rabinov studied flute with Roger Stevens and graduated in 1981 from Univ. of Southern California with a bachelor of music, flute performance. Paul apprenticed with Robert Gilchrist before establishing his own repair shop specializing in flute repair and restoration for the past 37 years. He is Straubinger-certified. He is Muramatsu-certified and serves as the training school for Muramatsu certification in US. In 2012 Paul was part of a panel at the National Flute Associa...tion Convention in the USA teaching the Interactive Guide to Flute Repair, and he frequently gives private coaching to professional technicians. Paul is known as the repair technician to the stars of the LA recording industry, orchestras, studios, etc. Paul has been to Japan a couple of times to train with the flute makers at Muramatsu, and is recognized as the leading technician of Muramatsu's in the USA. 10.01.2022 What is FluteFix Repair Workshop? A 3-day event, the first of it’s kind in Australia. This course is a masterclass all about Flute Repair! It is being held in Melbourne on the 9-11th January 2018. Students can come to Day 1 or 3 days for the full experience. Be prepared to take your flute apart!

09.01.2022 Jim Phelan, conservatory trained as a horn player, became general manager of the Powell flute company where Lillian Burkart made flute bodies, keys, padded flutes and piccolos and tested instruments. Together in 1981 they founded Burkart-Phelan, Inc. to provide subcontract services to Powell for the manufacture of piccolos. In 1984, Jim acquired the Powell Company. He left Powell in 1989 to finish his mechanical engineering degree. Upon graduation Jim entered the world of me...chanical engineering designing electron-beam guns, automobile components and surgical instruments. In 1997 Jim rejoined his wife in building instruments, uniting his engineering skill and his eighteen years of flutemaking expertise. Today, Burkart-Phelan is a world leader in flute and piccolo manufacturing with their state-of-the-art workshop in Shirley, Massachusetts and satellite workshop in Tianjin, China serving the Asian market. Jim manages the Burkart-Phelan Asian Assets. In 1980 Jim authored the Complete Guide to the Flute. The second edition was completed in 2006. He is in high demand to give lectures on repair, building and acoustics of musical instruments worldwide. See more
