23.01.2022 On a recent FSL course, we were touched and moved by the contribution of a very special participant and member of the Flute School London family - Harvey Goldst...ein. Harveys lesson on Faurs Cantique de Jean Racine with Michael Cox was transformative and inspiring and everyone who was there remembers it. We were so sorry to learn that, amongst the thousands lost to COVID-19 in recent months, Harvey was sadly one of them. Michael Cox wanted to put together a tribute - and chose to play the piece that Harvey had played to him in what he recalls as an unforgettable class See more

21.01.2022 Gday folks, Mark here. When I was a kid, I started to collect quotes that I found inspirational or character building and from time to time, I would turn to them for guidance or affirmation. The ones I preferred are often easy to remember and drive the point home clearly and concisely, so you can bring it to the front of your mind whenever the appropriate occasion calls for it. I hope you find them as useful and inspirational as they have been for me and if you have any of your own, please feel free to share them with us! www.flutesandflutists.com/marks-favourite-quotes/

16.01.2022 G'day folks, Mark here. I recently came across an old interview of the great American violinist, Isaac Stern. Within a few moments, I realised I had stumbled upon great wisdom being imparted so I took to transcribing it all down, in case the video ever gets taken down or lost. I don't know which program this came from or where the full interview is but you can find the original video and full transcription here: https://flutesandflutists.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-mu/ "On...e does not think, or plan. You simply know it and you do your best. Once in a while, there are moments, where you feelthank God I’m a musician. Because one can be a part of something in a way that nobody but a musician can touch. You know, we players, we reach across centuries and touch the mind and heart and soul of somebody long dead. But he’s not dead, he’s right there with us, the music is there. So we have a chance to touch it. You have to understand it. You have to feel this. If you are thinking about how wonderful you are, and how well you can get into the music better than anyone else, you’ll never do it."

11.01.2022 WE ARE STILL OPEN! This is how far we'll go to get our phone up and running again! Just kidding, our shop phone is now working (pending any gentle breeze that might knock it out again). This is part of a planned upgrade of the existing streetscape by our local city council. Needless to say, getting in through the front is going to be a little tricky over the next couple of weeks but we are definitely still open! If you are visiting us, please let the lovely construction worke...rs out the front know and they will escort you to our front door. We also have a back entrance, accessible through Poole Lane, that might be a little better for your shoes. You will find our doorbell above the '1/311' sign, but if you have trouble locating it then please call us on (02) 9079 1256 and we will come and let you in. We do apologise for the inconvenience but we are looking forward to getting our new and improved sidewalk!

11.01.2022 "Although music teachers and school principals across NSW are well aware of the risks from unmanaged singing and playing of some wind instruments, there are strategies that can overcome these challenges. There are many contradictions and inconsistencies in the current open-ended ruling, which put the mental well-being of our children at risk, not to mention the livelihoods of thousands of NSW self-employed music teachers, band and choir directors. School music making brings spirit and hope to our children." We cannot agree more and are in full support of keeping School Music alive. Please help them (and our culture) reach their goal by signing this petition!
