03.01.2022 Vale Nigel Peck AM It is with regret we report the passing of Nigel Peck, at the age of 89. Nigel was brought up in Melbourne but his grandfather founded Davey’s Bay Yacht Club in 1909, which meant Nigel was born with salt in his blood. Nigel served two terms as Commodore of Davey’s Bay Yacht Club 1966 68 and 1982-84. He sailed many classes at DBYC including Gwen 12’s before settling on a Flying Fifteen in 1971 crewing in a boat called Tempest. In 1991 Nigel presented the... Tempest Trophy to FFIA which is awarded to third place overall in the Australian Championship. Nigel served 2 terms as President of FFIA 1984-86 and 1990-92. The latter term represents his greatest legacy to the class in that with the assistance of Paul Altmann (National Measurer) they persuaded our UK cousins to tighten the 1 tolerance either side of the drawing Uffa Fox allowed to +/- 7 mm, eventually the rest of the world concurred which gave us the tight one design hull shape we now have. Nigel was a great believer in the Flying Fifteen World Championship and sponsored shipping for several teams to these events over the years. Flying Fifteen International recognised Nigel’s contribution in 2009 when he was awarded one of the inaugural Uffa Fox Medals.
