11.01.2022 WHO DO YOU SERVE? Who's language are you speaking? Who are you attracting?... Too often the answer small businesses gives to "who is your target audience?" is "...well, everyone!" Unfortunately that's not a good sign. Whilst it's true that we do want to sell to everyone, in that we don't want to discriminate or limit who can buy from us, we don't want to be marketing ourselves to everyone! Ever tried talking to your grandma, uncle, sibling, close friend and boss all at the same time? Yeah, I bet it didn't go too well. Confusion, mixed messages, not being heard and at the end of it all, no one has a clue about what you were trying to tell them. That's exactly what's happening to your message and brand every time you speak without knowing who your target audience is. By defining who our audience is, we can focus our marketing message to specific types of people to get the most return for our efforts. Effective and clear messages, every single time! By identifying who they are and what challenges they face or pain points they're experiencing, we are able to ensure that we are delivering the right message, to the right people, at the right time. Can you describe your target audience in detail? Do you know everything there is to know about them? Does your product or service solve different problems for different groups of people? Try using the prompts in the slides below to create your own customer profiles. You can create a few different profiles to represent your existing customers, the customers you want more of and any other groups that may have different characteristics and buying behaviours. Think about who they are as a person. What do they believe? What are their values? What types of brands to the purchase? Where do they live? What do they do for work? ... Essentially we're trying to document their story so that we can better understand what they need, how they make decisions and how we can provide a solution in a way that appeals to them.
