24.01.2022 The boys are growing up fast. For those following the progress of our two orphan tubies, here they are this morning. Trying to keep two hyperactive reprobates still for a photo is like trying to teach a cat to play Bach on piano. Warru on the left has now been in care for 55 days (approx. 58 days old) and his little sidekick Jabaju has been in care for 22 days (approx. 34 days old). Both healthy and full of beans, they are loving their Biolac FF milk and for about a week little Warru has started nibbling on wedges of apple and pear in his mesh cage at night. Before and after weighing his fruit, showed that he ate just over 5 grams of fruit last night. Bat wrangling by Dave and photo by Connie.

22.01.2022 Something we all deal with all the time - Little red Flying-fox entangled on a barbed wire fence. This is fairly substantial membrane damage, but with hydration, pain management, antibiotics and soluble aspirin, this little guy should not lose too much membrane and fly free again in a few weeks time. He is a sweet little soul and joins several other reds in the hospital cage.

20.01.2022 Look who is growing up fast. At around 18 days old now, little Warru the Eastern tube-nose baby is just powering along. Now drinking 1.1mL of milk replacer five times daily (plus a generous water drink), this morning he weighs 14.33g and has a forearm of 38.5mm (intake stats were 10g and 29mm forearm). Becoming very active, his 'baby looks' are rapidly changing. Still in his hotbox day and night, he is also now spending short periods hanging, flapping, grooming and learning to wrap and wash. An absolute delight to have in care, if he could, little Warru would spend all day sleeping on top of Connie's hand.

16.01.2022 Warru the baby tube-nose update: when working with animals for photography - work with them - not against. Not the shot I envisaged, but this is what the little guy wanted to do, so this is what we got and it's a bit cute. Now 26 days into care, he is powering at 18.73g and 45.5mm (came in at 10g and 29mm forearm). Little Warru is on 5 feeds per day of about 1.7mL per feed (0.3mL on day one) with a silicone possum teat - with sustained coordinated flapping sessions and fully thermoregulating as of three days ago. His 'baby face' is becoming more 'adult' and he is becoming increasingly active and soon about to be spending time in a converted mesh bait keeper cage during the day. #tubenosedbats

11.01.2022 What is cuter than a baby tube-nose in Care? Answer ... two baby tubies. We have posted updates of little Warru (on the right). Warru means 'young man' in our local Yalanji language, and he is now around 38 days old and has doubled his intake weight. Fresh in yesterday from Edmonton (south of Cairns) is little Jabaju, which means 'younger brother' in Yalanji and he is around 12 days old - hydrated, stabilised and feeding very well. We are only aware of around half a dozen tubies hand-reared in Australia, and Jabaju is our third. So yes, we are keeping records of absolutely everything.

07.01.2022 Hi all. I am releasing update 3.1.1 for the Flying-fox Manual on 10 January (Sunday), and this is a free download to all people who have already purchased. Please note that this is the last free update download before a small annual subscription kicks in in June, and you must register to get the download link. Many purchases were made as bulk orders through groups and coordinators, and there are at least 150 people who have a copy but have not yet registered. To register, just go to https://www.ffmv3.com.au/ and click on the 'members area' tab. For those wanting a copy, just go to the same site address and click on 'ordering'. Please note that all copies going out after Sunday will be the new updated version. For all general enquiries, email me at [email protected] Cheers, Dave
