05.01.2022 Thunderstorms are forecast for much of southeast Queensland this weekend as hot, humid air combines with a surface trough. Severe thunderstorms are likely this ...afternoon with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall. There is even the potential for supercells with giant hail and destructive winds. What is a supercell thunderstorm? Thunderstorms require three basic ingredients to form: moisture, a lifting mechanism, and instability in the atmosphere. If you add a fourth ingredient - wind shear- that's a recipe for a supercell. These organised thunderstorms can last many hours and travel long distances, potentially causing considerable damage.
