As many of you know, we work closely with Carries Place Domestic Violence and Homelessness Service in Maitland and each year we run a charity drive to help make sure the most vulnerable in our community are not left out of the Christmas celebrations.... This year, with the emotional and financial strain COVID19 has put on our community, Carries Place is in the devastating position of both being called on by more families for help than usual yet have received less donations than previous years. As a mother of three gorgeous children who do not want for a thing (of importance anyway), it breaks my heart to think that there are kids in OUR community, OUR town that are going to miss out this Christmas. Theirs will not be a Christmas with noise and mess all over the lounge room floor on Xmas morning. They won’t have bellies tight with Christmas lunch and need a snooze before they start again with the other side of the family at dinner. They won’t be sitting at the Christmas table in new clothes and eating left over ham for days or discovering hidden gems in the pile of gifts over the coming weeks. These are kids that have already missed out this year. They have already moved from families and loved ones, they have left their stuff behind in search of a new safer home. These are kids that are older than their years, more worldly than their peers and more street smart than most adults. And now Christmas has been cancelled for them. Not for everyone. Just for them. Whoa, that rips at this Mumma Bear’s heart like you wouldn’t believe. Maybe it’s because through the work we do they are not featureless kids but little scared faces that I have sat across from while mum signs a new lease and brave young lads trying to be strong and pretending to be the man of the house now. Picking up part time jobs while they are at school to help make sure mum has enough money each week to pay the rent. Christmas is more than presents and food, it’s about family and love but when you can longer be with the rest of the family and you have learnt at a tender age that love can hurt, a couple of gifts and some treats at dinner can at least make you feel a little included in the celebrations. Again, this Christmas (for the 6th year in a row) we will be supporting Carries Place with Christmas treats and a STACK of gift cards but even that won’t go very far this year. If you would like to help us make sure NO kid in our town misses out, you are welcome to drop donations to our office for distribution or even better, spread the love two fold and purchase gift cards from small family run, local businesses for donation.
