09.01.2022 This afternoon at 4 pm on Cairns FM 89.1. I’ll be playing two hours of music from the Australian Violinist Ray Chen. Chen began learning violin at the age of four. Within five years he completed all 10 levels of the Suzuki Music Education in Brisbane. Chen was invited to play solo with the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra at invited to perform at the opening celebration concert of the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan at the age of eight years. Paul Furse (our regular photographer) often wondered if his grandfather was the real James Bond. John Paul Wellington Furse worked for the British Naval intelligence during the second world war. He took part in operation Golden Eye and worked with Ian Fleming (although he didn’t like him much). Paul is now in possession of his grandfather’s journals which shines a light on some of his escapades and is a great insight into what it was really like working under cover, meeting with M (yes, there really was an M), at times the enemy in hot pursuit, and when even the sound of the sliding door closing on a train carriage can sound like a pistol being cocked. Paul is in the early stages of writing a book about his grandfather’s tales and would like to share a few of the stories in his grandfather’s original words from his diaries and Naval Intelligence Division briefing notes.
