24.01.2022 OSTEOPOROSIS Did you know... Peak bone mass is usually reached in your late 20s? (Another reason to promote physical activity throughout adolescence) Women tend to have minimal change in this bone mass between age 30 and menopause ... It is normal for women to experience rapid bone loss in the first few years post menopause. This decrease usually slows, however will continue throughout postmenopausal years, and can lead to osteoporosis Osteoporosis affects 1 in 4 women over the age of 75. Men- youre also at risk of this disease too! BUT! Did you also know- that physical activity can increase bone mineral density and even slow the regression of bone loss What is the best type of physical activity for this you ask?.. Weight bearing exercise! Things such as resistance training, brisk walking, jogging and even dancing- how fun! Have a read below about how Cairns local, Helen, has recently changed her lifestyle after being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Well done Helen!

19.01.2022 Hi all! We hope youre all well, and also staying home where you can. Good news- we are in the process of transitioning from face to face consultations, to online/ phone consultations! This means that we can all do our bit to flatten this curve, while still accessing the services we provide ... We are offering Telehealth consultations (via telephone, or video call) for private clients AND clients referred to us by their GPs, through a care plan. You dont even have to leave your home! I (Mary) am still offering home visits to private clients who are interested, and meet our criteria for having a low health risk. Please remember that the social distancing rules still apply to keep us safe too, so some exercises may be modified to suit - Mary

19.01.2022 Did you know: Approximately every 15 hours, an Australian child is born with cerebral palsy. Statistically, 1 in 3 people with cerebral palsy cannot walk unassisted. Facts from @cpalliance Pictured one of my youngest clients absolutely smashing his previous goals on the rower! He has consistently beat his own 2 minute sprints- super impressive!! Kyle ... #concept2 #concept2rower #cerebralpalsy #exerciseismedicine #exercisephysiology

18.01.2022 Whos up for this challenging workout, and who can beat my time of 46 minutes?!? Remember to always work within your capabilities! (This one is for our followers who are conditioned to high intensity training already) Good luck!... Kyle See more

13.01.2022 How are you going with your health and fitness goals during this time? Now that restrictions in QLD are easing, are you getting your daily dose of exercise? Are you getting out for a morning swim? ... Are you kicking the ball around with your kids? Are you back on the greens slicing a few into the woods? For some people these seem to be the questions that are being ignored... Maybe more importantly, if youre someone whos been working closely with your GP or Allied Health Professional (AHP) for any particular reason in the lead up to the COVID19 lock down, have you kept up to date with your important appointments? The "Quarantine Fifteen" (although an American term referencing imperial pounds) has become something that people have just come to expect during their time in isolation. Weight gain... rises in lethargy... rises in stress and mental health concerns... disruptions to peoples medication regimes... all these have profound impacts on someones quality of life. Its been well publicised that roughly 1 in 3 Aussies have packed on a few "Corona kilos" during this time - including yours truly. But its time now for you to ask yourself the million dollar question: So, what now? The simple answer is: pick up where you left off, or thereabouts. Remember, your service providers have been hit hard by the pandemic as well - speaking generally on behalf of all AHPs - we couldnt think of anything better than to be providing our services and helping our clients once again. Who were you working with before your routine was upended over the last couple of months? Get in touch with them and schedule either a TeleHealth appointment or visit in person again. Struggling to return to your healthy eating patterns? Give your Dietitian a call. Lower back pain hampering you since youve stopped exercising? Get onto your Physiotherapist. Struggling for ideas on home based exercises to keep you going before your gym re-opens? Give your favorite Exercise Physiologists a call (Kyle and Mary) and get your routine going again. All of these services are open for business here in Cairns so get in touch and get back to hitting your goals for 6!

12.01.2022 There are lots of questions asked around the timing of eating and exercise, particularly in the mornings. "Should I eat breakfast before I go for my walk, or should I wait until I get home...?" There is often a lot of (well intended, but) misguided information with these topics and I always like to promote the importance of K.I.S.S - Keep it simple, Stupid! If you have questions about food and exercise with regards to your health and fitness, dont ask your hair dresser or t...he mail man (unless they have a bachelor degree in dietetics of sports science!)... get in touch with your local Dietitian or Exercise Physiologist. A study was completed at the end of last year highlighting the benefits of exercising in a "fasted state" and what this means for people who have been told theyre "Pre-Diabetic" or who have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. A fasted state is after a period of about 8 hours where you havent eaten anything (including coffee!!) - typically first thing in the morning when you wake up! What was found was the group who completed their morning exercise on an "empty stomach" (a 50min moderate intensity bike ride) were more responsive to Insulin. This means their capacity to keep their blood sugar levels within a healthy range had improved (along with other metabolic benefits). This is vital for long term, healthy diabetes management (and prevention for those who are "Pre-diabetic!!"). Our body stores energy for later use and this is exactly the fuel source that is being utilized to great effect when we complete our morning exercise in a fasted state. The other amazing find was that the group who exercised in a fasted state burnt twice as much fat as the group who ate breakfast before they worked out! This doesnt always result in weight loss necessarily, as you need a caloric defect for that, but its a great way to help "burn" the higher number of fatty acids in our bloodstream in a fasted state. So next time youre keen to pound the pavement before work or do a few laps in the pool, you should strongly consider doing it in a fasted state! If you have any further questions about this or similar topics dont be afraid to get in touch with us! Damien. https://www.dailymail.co.uk//Working-stomach-breakfast-hel

11.01.2022 Good morning everyone, We are very excited to hear that some of the restrictions are being gradually eased as QLD, and in particular FNQ, has done a wonderful job in limiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Marlin Coast Pool in Smithfield are arranging bookings for people and their carers / physios / exercise physiologists, if necessary to commence exercise sessions as of Saturday the 16th May.... You can book hourly slots (45mins pool time and 15mins to get out, dry off and leave the premises ready for the next person to arrive) in the lap pool with 1 person per lane allowed. The same hourly slots can be booked for the HEATED pool, which will be divided into four quarters, allowing up to four individuals to use a corner each and will allow the swimmer plus their carer / physio / exercise physiologist to enjoy getting back into it again! We invite all of our clients and anyone new to contact us if you have further questions and we look forward to supporting local businesses again and returning to our exercise sessions! 05.01.2022 This is a great piece from our friends at Genesis! Incidental exercise can make a big difference to you total energy expenditure throughout the day. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Walking/cycling to work a couple days a week.... It all adds up. If youre finding it difficult to fit in set periods of time to dedicate to exercise, why not ask yourself what changes you can implement into your week to help increase your incidental activity??

05.01.2022 What a beautiful day assisting my wonderful clients to reach their goals- outdoor edition #funandfunctional - Kyle

04.01.2022 Unfortunately, I can vouch for this too! A lot of people, particularly women, still believe they will bulk up as soon as they start lifting weights. I PROMISE this is not the case! Dont believe me? Come and train with me for a few months, and I promise you wont walk away looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger There are many uncommonly mentioned benefits to resistance training: including helping improve bone mineral density, improved insulin sensitivity, increased metabolic r...ate and also improvements in mental health. I would list more, but all this talk about weights is making me want to go to the gym asap! P.S. I Love how this Physician just tells it like it is! - Kyle

03.01.2022 The world of diabetes management can be stressful, fatiguing and generally depressing. This is usually due to the unknown variances and fluctuations over time in people who are struggling to maintain a healthy range of blood glucose levels (BGL's) through the day. The most common complaints I hear from my patients are to do with the side effects, which usually include an upset stomach and weight gain as they try to successfully implement new medications into their managem...ent regime. This article highlights the ever growing list of options patients have access to as we gain a greater understanding of diabetes management - options with less adverse side effects. If you ever have any questions regarding your diabetes management feel free to drop us a message and see how we can help. Cheers, Damien
