23.01.2022 Three former Virgin ATR 72 aircraft arrived in Mareeba over the last week from Melbourne as a result of the Virgin Australia fleet restructure. The 68 seater aircraft makes it one of the larger civilian aircraft to visit Mareeba since World War 2. The recently completed aviation park is comfortably accomodating the aircraft which offers a much more drier storage environment than the coast.... Pictured aircraft are: VH-FVP (arrived 19 Nov) VH-FVN (arrived 24 Nov) VH-FVR (arrived 26 Nov)

22.01.2022 Make sure you grab some tickets for our raffle before they run out! 22.01.2022 Before and after of todays efforts cleaning up the DC3 wings. A lot easier & safer doing it while on the ground! Tailwheel leg is off waiting for repairs.

22.01.2022 Thanks to the O’Brien family for the donation of this A2 laminated poster featuring the aircraft of WW2. With the increased time isolating at home if you have any aviation related items worth displaying please get in touch!

21.01.2022 "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."... Photo: Taken by FNQAM - Anzac Day in Mareeba in 2019. 2020 may not look like this, but we will still remember them.

21.01.2022 ANZAC DAY 2020 This Saturday at 6am, light up the dawn by standing at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room to remember all those who have served and sacrificed.

20.01.2022 If anyone sees a stolen Japanese zero fighter in 1/48 scale flying around we’d appreciate it returned. Unfortunately operating on a shoe string budget there is only so much we can do to secure the cabinet (dynabolted to wall & panels screwed) as much as possible. This is why we only have a small part of the museum collection on display. Once we have a dedicated museum building rest assured our facility will be fully secured.... We have a similar model in stock of a 1/72 scale (not as big as original) - if anyone would like to build this aircraft for display to replace the original please get in touch.

20.01.2022 The Australian Aviation Museum National Network AGM & conference is underway for the first time today virtually. 18.01.2022 On this day, 28 August 1972. The crash of a DHC-4 Caribou in Papua New Guinea on this day was probably the most tragic accident in RAAF history. Aircraft A4-2...33 -- one of a pair of Caribous detached semi-permanently from No 38 Squadron -- was returning PNG school cadets from their annual training camp when it went missing on a flight from Lae to Port Moresby. Despite a large-scale air search, it was not until three days later that four schoolboy survivors were located, having attempted to walk out for assistance. They were able to direct rescuers to the crash site at Kudjeru Gap, near Wau, and a fifth schoolboy was winched out of the thick jungle, only to die later. The Caribou's crew of three, plus a ground liaison officer from the Army, and 21 school cadets had all been killed in the disaster. 17.01.2022 Celebrating 100 years of RAAF service in Cairns will take place next Saturday 27th March 10am at the Catalina memorial. The event that was following the 10am service at another site has been cancelled.

17.01.2022 Today, the 3rd December is GivingTuesday. What is GivingTuesday? GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that’s unleashing the power of people and organisations to transform their communities and the world. Whether you’re giving your voice, your time, goods, or your money, helping others or working for the causes or places you care about, generosity is one of the most powerful ways you can have an impact in the world.... Our volunteers are making a significant contribution of their time to help create a fantastic community asset open to everyone that will display how aviation has played an active part in the development of Far North Queensland. This will give locals & visitors a unique place to visit, inspire the young, learn skills, meet people & much more. In early 2020, we’ll have building plans finalised, expand with container facilities to store artefacts we’re collecting & later relocate hangar buildings to our current blocks. Feel great by helping make a difference by helping build an asset for generations to come. For financial donations, take advantage of our recently received DGR status with all donations over $2 being tax deductible! We are planning on leveraging every $1 received so we can receive an additional $1 back or better in government funding, but without this important seed funding this multi-million dollar project won’t be fully realised. While we wait for approval from Facebook for donations, you can still donate by: Bank transfer BSB 633000 ACC 164 132 367 Credit card via Paypal: http://www.fnqam.com.au/donate Or email us for more information: [email protected] For more info on events & newsletters sign up from our facebook page or website. 14.01.2022 On December 10 1919 100 years ago the crew of a Vickers Vimy twin engine plane touched down on a paddock in Fannie Bay to complete the Great Air Race, a London to Darwin aviation challenge that was then the world’s longest ever air journey. This hour pilot Michael Smith in his Southern Sun SeaBear aircraft will land at Darwin airport, recreating the air race flight 100 years ago. The 1919 event was unprecedented for the aviation industry, which had only started in 1903 an...d been honed during WWI, and was not without tragedy. But what the winning and ultimately only crew to finish pilots Ross and Keith Smith, and mechanics Wally Shiers and James Bennett accomplished when they landed in Darwin was and still remains one of the greatest achievements in international aviation history. When the prime minister, back in 1919, announced this race, it’s hard to cast our minds back and appreciate just what a momentous undertaking it was, said adventurer Michael Smith, who is recreating the milestone flight for the centenary. Pilots Sir Ross Smith and Sir Keith Smith and mechanics Wally Shiers and James Bennett with the victors in the Great Air Race. What these guys did was the moon landing of its day it was worldwide news and newspapers around the world covered it because it was just such an audacious thing to do. The Great Air Race was the brainchild of then Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes, an aviation enthusiast who conceived of the event as a way of getting Australian pilots home from WWI. Others, including the Dutch, had shown interest in attempting longer distance flights but it took Hughes’ ambitious idea to test if the dream could be realised. The race was only open to Australian crews of two or more and flights had to reach Australia within 30 days before the end of 1919, with a 10,000 promised to the winner. NT news article

12.01.2022 Today marked the completion of the Mareeba Airport Upgrade project with the Official opening of the stage 2 works. The works are the credit to many people who have persisted pushing for State & Federal funding for these works to occur with particular mention of Tom Gilmore & his team. This stage included resurfacing & strengthening of the runway, new LED lights, weather information & a full-length taxiway(compared to what we used to have) producing many efficiencies for airc...raft users, airport operating costs & environmental benefits. We look forward to being apart of the next phase of airport development with the construction of an aviation museum. (Also pictured is the progress of a Corsair being restored in Mareeba)

12.01.2022 A perfect day in the skies over the Tablelands with the guys from NQ Warbirds.

11.01.2022 Thanks to the crews at Mareeba Shire Council for restoring the Hoevet Field sign. The sign was in need of restoration & relocation after new infrastructure installed was blocking the sign from view. For those who werent aware of why Mareeba airport was also referred to as Hoevet Field: The Americans during WW2 gave it this nickname after Major Dean Carol "Pinky" Hoevet was killed on the 16 August 1942 in a plane crash after departing Mareeba.

11.01.2022 Thanks to this top bloke for donating some aviation relics which have been collected over the years! Rolph at Aerosmith Welding will also be helping repair weld our cracked DC3 tail leg made out of magnesium alloy so it will once again be sitting on her tail! Can anyone confirm the years this former RFDS stretcher would have been in service? Current thoughts are somewhere around the 1930s..

05.01.2022 This month back in 1943, RAAF 220 Radar Station at Bones Knob became operational in the defence of Northern Australia. RAAF 220 Radar Station, located at Bones Knob near Tolga on the Atherton Tableland, became operational in September 1943. It played a role in the protection of the large concentration of ammunition, ordnance and stores depots established on the Atherton Tableland as part of the assembly and training of Australian troops for the final phase of the New Guinea a...nd island campaigns. Operation of the Radar Station at Bones Knob ceased in December 1944 as the South West Pacific frontline moved further north. Tolga was one of five British-designed Advanced Chain Overseas (ACO) radar stations constructed in Queensland during World War II: four being completed (Benowa, Toorbul Point, Home Hill and Bones Knob) and a fifth not completed (Paluma). Early British wartime radar technology evolved rapidly and the ACO system was already outdated when introduced in Australia in 1943. ACO radar stations were built to the design of the Directorate of Works for the British Air Ministry and were very conspicuous through their two 40 metre high timber towers and two reinforced concrete radar transmitting and receiving shelters. Today 2 main & a 3rd secondary concrete igloo remain located on private property and are heritage listed on the Queensland State Heritage Register.

05.01.2022 Check out the incredible art work we facilitated for the Mareeba Airport. The works were completed by Tom Cosic & Ann-Marie Keating from the Murluridji Aboriginal group. The mural painted by Ann-Marie tells the story of how different migratory birds brought with them a change between the wet and the dry season. Tom Cosic's mural depicts two WWII planes, an American B17 Bomber and an Australian built Boomerang fighter which were both stationed at the Mareeba Airport since 1943. The project was funded by Mareeba Shire Council through the Queensland Government's Regional Arts Development Fund. Ross Bensted &MSC

01.01.2022 Introducing our latest aircraft acquisition, the Dakota C-47 more commonly known as the DC3. Yesterday, was a great day to remove the wings in preparation for transport in a few weeks. FNQAM members Steve, Denis, Brendan, Bob & Scott, along with former Bush Pilot’s DC3 Engineer Col Whyte, MAF engineers Kevin & Bradley assisted with the removal of 328 wing attach bolts, each wing!... In preparation for the day we required four attach brackets to lift the wing by crane. Each side held by 8 bolts fit to balance points on the 350kg wing & lifted by crane. Thanks to Richard & Norton for organising the additional attach brackets. After minimal persuasion & negotiating some corrosion around wing attach bolts on the 1945 model aircraft we’re pleased to have succesfully completed stage 1 - wing removal! This project was made possible by The Copland Foundation. Thanks to Dale & the team from Mareeba Crane Hire for safely lifting the wings.
