23.01.2022 Friday nights at FNQ Wildlife Rescue. Two of our Wildlife Rescuers went above and beyond last night This Boobook Owl got himself trapped in a high-ceiling warehouse in Portsmith and as owls are active at night, a rescue attempt was planned for after dark Rescuers Jamie and Wilf spent their Friday evening at the warehouse keeping the owl flying around until he wore himself out and was able to be caught safely.... After 24 hours resting up and getting a good feed, little '' was taken back to Portsmith and successfully released. Thank you, Quinny Supplies for supporting FNQ Wildlife Rescue and caring for our native wildlife. #fnqwildlife #boobookowl #rescuecarerelease

Only a few weeks on and he has put on 220...grams which is two thirds of his original body weight from when he entered care. 22.01.2022 2 foot tall and full of sass Back in March, Little Belle was found roadside in Mareeba beside her deceased Mum At 1.1kg and approx. 6 months old, Belle needed another 5-6 months in care as Eastern Grey joeys stay in Mum's pouch until approx. 6kg ... As you can imagine this involves a LOT of specialised wildlife food This is a huge cost as a Wildlife Carer. Now in care for 3 months, with awesome vet advice and dedicated wildlife care, Belle is a healthy 3kgs You can help us support Wildlife Carers with a tax-deductible donation to our dedicated to cover the cost of fauna supplies >> bit.ly/3ctfS8s #fnqwildlife #easterngrey #kangaroo #rescuecarerelease

22.01.2022 You can help our platypus which are in danger. Opera House traps which are used to capture fish and freshwater crustaceans are also death traps for platypus. Th...ey are banned east of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, but unfortunately they are still used in the rivers and streams west of the Range. By responding to this consultation by May 31 in the Animal Care and Protection Act you have the opportunity to save the platypus. Section 7 of the Discussion paper mentions traps and Division 2 paragraphs 34/35 relate to traps https://daf.engagementhub.com.au/animal-welfare. It is important that they are banned throughout Queensland as the platypus are suffering horrible deaths by entering the traps to get the bait and then can’t escape. Platypus are a threatened species which is a disgraceful situation for this unique animal. Please spend a few minutes telling the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries that opera house traps must be banned throughout Queensland. https://www.daf.qld.gov.au//review-of-the-animal-care-and- See more

16.01.2022 In isolated communities where there are no trained wildlife carers and most likely only visiting vets, FNQ Wildlife Rescue does everything we can to provide support to members of the public. FNQ Wildlife Rescue covers a large regional area that stretches from Cardwell in the south, north to Cooktown, and west to Karumba This means we can't always have a wildlife carer available close by we will always do what we can to provide advice and assistance over the phone and to... make arrangements that benefit the animal. 15.01.2022 FNQ Wildlife Rescue has a proud 25-year history in Far North Queensland and with that comes a vast and priceless amount of wildlife carer experience. One such carer is Mr. Fred Howles who along with his wife Betty, have been loyal and invaluable members of FNQ Wildlife Rescue for the past 2 decades. Fred & Betty have supported the organisation in so many ways during this time not only as wildlife carers and rescuers but as active committee members, with new carer training, fu...ndraising, public education programs, and community events. We proudly continue to build and supply custom-designed 'Fred cages' for new carers that were built and tested by Fred over many years to create an ideal lightweight snake and predator-bird proof cage ideal for native bird care. In recent years, Fred has stepped back as an active carer but continues to support the group in an advisory role and also with the collection of donations at the couple's plant stall at the Holloways Beach Markets and Gordonvale Cottage Markets. Look out for them if you're at the markets and say hi :) #fnqwildliferescue #rescuecarerelease

05.01.2022 This gorgeous bird has a second chance due to a combination of an awesome team at Boongarry Veterinary Surgery in Cairns and a dedicated wildlife carer putting in the time and effort to rehabilitate Curlews are a large ground-dwelling bird with long skinny legs and usually, a broken leg is not a good outcome :( This young curlew sustained a closed fracture which meant that rehabilitation in this instance was possible ... FNQ Wildlife Rescue provides a vital service to the community with a 24/7 rescue hotline and a dedicated network of rescuers and carers. All volunteer-run and with no Government funding! End-of-financial year is the perfect time to support wildlife care with a tax-deductible donation :) Every little bit helps and all support is appreciated by Kim #fnqwildlife #curlew #RescueCareRelease

03.01.2022 Did you know that a Papuan Frogmouth is NOT an owl?! A recent call to our phone team Baby 'owl' on the ground in a backyard in the Cairns suburb of Whitfield.... The case was referred to an experienced FNQ Wildlife Rescue carer, who after finding out more details about the situation advised the caller how to create a makeshift nest for the family and reunite the chick with its parent. This is an awesome outcome Papuan Frogmouths are often confused with owls but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Their beak is large and wide, hence the name frogmouth. Unlike owls, they don't have curved talons on their feet. When it’s not mistaken for an owl, the Papuan Frogmouth can easily be confused with a tree branch! #fnqwildlife #papuanfrogmouth #rescuecarerelease

03.01.2022 YOURKA RESERVE SEES FIRST KOALA IN 13 YEARS A koala has been spotted on a Far North Queensland bush reserve for the first time in more than a decade. The Y...ourka Reserve, west of Tully, is a 43,000 hectare bush land property managed by conservation foundation Bush Heritage Australia. The site is at the northernmost edge of the koala's typical distribution, but last month a distinctive growl led wildlife volunteers to a tree. The next night a healthy male was spotted clinging to the trunk. Reserve Manager Paul Hales says there are bands of tree species on the property can sustain koala populations. "There’s been some talk of Koalas in the district for some time, from older blokes that have been there. "They’re pretty rare on the ground." He said one night last month two volunteers heard a growl, and he went out the next night and found it. "I spent a few hours both with a thermal, then with a white spotlight to no avail. "It wasn’t until I was packed up ready to leave I ran a spotlight around again and here he was sitting at the base of a tree, looking at me." The foundation took the property over in 2007. 01.01.2022 Who's been lucky enough to see a ? This little guy came into care after getting caught in a spider's web :... The leaden flycatcher is 14.5-16cm long and weighs around 10-15g A very active and agile bird, it hops between branches and catches insects in flight.
