23.01.2022 For those unaware, we have an Opportunity Shop located at 8 Hamilton Street, Mont Albert that raises funds for our organisation and have done for many many years. If you are up that way make sure you drop in and say hello to the ladies there. The volunteers there do amazing work and we thank them for everything that they do.

We must continue to support people with a disability to feel empowered, feel they are treated equally and ensure that that we see the person before we see the disability. 23.01.2022 Assisting the community, one localised hero group at a time! Yesterday some of the crew from Dromana had a fantastic time handing out Boomerang Bags to the local community. It was great to see everyone so enthusiastic about taking part! Thanks to the Sorrento and Dromana Community Houses for assisting us to make this possible. What a great initiative!

16.01.2022 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3 December each year. It is a day that is celebrated worldwide and aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. The theme for International Day of People with Disability for 2019 ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda’. 2019’s theme ...focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by the United Nations, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issue. The world celebrates in many different ways with thousands of events aimed around awareness. Tomorrow, as part of our local celebrations - we are involved with the annual All Abilities Day at Civic Reserve in Mornington. This year is extra special with the involvement of the Law Enforcement Torch Run - to promote the Special Olympics. The run festivities started today in at the Docklands and at the State Police Academy and 5 lucky people from focus will be torchbearers for the local run. This event will be televised on several different arenas and will receive a lot of press! Well done to everyone involved and we hope everyone enjoys celebrating at the All Abilities Day events tomorrow. #LETR (below are some photos from the events in the city today!)

13.01.2022 If you are down near the Super IGA Complex in Dromana this morning, be sure to drop in and see some of the people from our Community & Social Participation group handing out locally made Boomerang Bags. These bags have all been made by the team there! What a great job taking part in looking after the local areas plastic use! Boomerang Bags is a community-driven initiative tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots level. Helping reduce plastic bag consumption not just across our beautiful Mornington Peninsula but across the country! This initiative is in collaboration with the Sorrento & Dromana Community Houses!

07.01.2022 An announcement from the organisations CEO - Gail Foster with regard to the Coronavirus. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) and risk of infection within the wider community in Australia, while still considered ‘low’, has started to increase in Australia. There are now several confirmed cases in Victoria. The risk of this infection spreading into the broader community would have extremely serious ramifications for the Disability Sector, as it is for the Health and Aged Care Sectors.... 'focus' is working extremely hard to mitigate the risks. We have now, and have had for many years, a "Pandemic Plan" that is updated annually. This plan sets out exactly what we will do at each stage of the spread of any virus/infection that poses a risk to the people who attend our services. Regular updates have been sent out to staff over the last few weeks, they are all aware of what to look for and what to do it anyone is unwell. All staff are instructed to take all reasonably practical safety measures to mitigate against attracting or spreading the virus. This includes: Using all usual infection control procedures, the use of gloves, hand sanitisers and thorough hand washing at all times Ensuring we have supplies of all the equipment we will need to manage this situation Taking any client who presents as unwell straight to the doctors All staff providing a doctors clearance certificate before returning to work if they have been off work with a cold or sore throat All staff notifying focus if they or any of their family members have travelled overseas, especially to China, Iran and Italy We are following all government health warnings and advice and will do what we are advised to do, that may mean some closures of the day services at some stage over the next few weeks but we are not at that stage yet. Right now there is not a reported case of Coronavirus in this area so we are still at the watch and prepare stage of our plan. If there are to be closures we will ring all families involved. Finally, I would ask that all families are equally as vigilant, if you or a family member is unwell please be tested and let us know, similarly if you or a family member are travelling to one of the effected countries we would ask that you do not visit our services for at least 14-days after you return to Australia. If we all work together on this, I am sure we can overcome this virus and look after the people we are all supporting. Regards Gail Foster Chief Executive Officer

06.01.2022 Recent article Mornington Peninsula Leader! Great news for all locals! All access ‘matting’ has again been placed at Mt Martha beach to enable those in wheelchairs get to the water’s edge. The matting is now available seven days a week - up from last year when it was only in place on weekends.... It will remain set up until April 21 with beach accessible chairs available on weekends. Mayor David Gill thanked Mt Martha Life Saving Club for its support to enable the Shire to provide 50m of beach matting and extra beach wheelchairs at the beach. mornpen.vic.gov.au/access
