25.01.2022 Excellent news from Indi in north east Victoria. 'Indi will lead the nation in renewables because of a $13 million investment announced today to develop Australia’s first marketplace for locally-generated renewable energy.'

24.01.2022 This report is worth a look if you're interested in achieving a transition from fossil fuels in Australia. It finds that a planned transition of Australia’s labour market away from fossil fuel jobs could occur without involuntary layoffs or severe disruption to communitiesif governments focus on a planned and fair transition. That transition needs to include: a clear, long-term timeline, measures to facilitate inter-industry mobility and voluntary severance as fossil fuels are phased-out, and generous retraining and diversification policies. https://www.futurework.org.au/planning_and_supporting_trans

24.01.2022 "Our world is facing irreversible destruction and still there's no urgency in Australian climate policy," writes Lenore Taylor, editor of Guardian Australia. Lenore Taylor's correct... It's why we launched an open letter calling on PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo) to increase ambition on climate & jobs. SIGN ON HERE > foe.org.au/climate_leadership

24.01.2022 Great to see this support for climate action from a range of Victorian MPs.

24.01.2022 You are welcome to join us at this online forum today. The health sector accounts for 7% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, but large energy users across the healthcare sector can significantly reduce these emissions by shifting to clean renewable energy. https://utsmeet.zoom.us//register/WN_YAqpbLfFTMCv-A6sNsLJFQ

24.01.2022 Nuclear power is not the answer to Climate Change! It's... Too Dirty! Nuclear power and uranium mining create vast amounts of radioactive and toxic waste.... Too Dangerous! Disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima endanger whole countries and regions. Too Expensive! Hundreds of billions would be needed for reactor new build and waste management. Too Slow! It takes decades for new power plants to be build, renewables only month. Please come to Yellowcake Country - Don't Nuke the Climate tonight on Zoom with FoE speaker Jim Green to learn more!

23.01.2022 The Adani Carmichael coal mine will cause massive harm to the land and climate. Now the Queensland Government has signed a deal with mining company Adani to defer payment of royalties on its Carmichael mine in central Queensland for an 'unspecified period of time'. Greens MP Michael Berkman called on the state government to reveal the terms of the royalty deferment.... https://www.abc.net.au//adani-carmichael-coal-min/12716272

23.01.2022 WE DID IT: Friends of the Earth Melbourne's Act on Climate collective cycled 100 laps of Parliament today. The 100km endurance feat sent a powerful message to t...he Dan Andrews govt ahead of its upcoming decision on Emissions Reduction Targets. The relay was also a fundraiser for our grassroots campaign. We're still short of our target... Will you chip in to celebrate these dedicated community climate champions? > https://100-laps-for-climate.raisely.com

23.01.2022 The impacts of climate change are devastating native wildlife and ecosystems. The Age: "Last summer’s catastrophic bushfires have caused platypus populations in... south-eastern Australia to decline by up to 18 per cent, bolstering calls to have the species’ national conservation status changed to ‘vulnerable’." Now more than ever, we need govts to provide greater protection for native wildlife.

22.01.2022 This is outrageous. 'Rio Tinto wrote to the Morrison government last year urging it to act quickly to transfer environmental approval powers to the Western Australia government, before a major review of national environment laws was complete.' They tried to circumvent the formal assessment process for the federal laws. ... https://www.theguardian.com//rio-tinto-made-early-call-for

22.01.2022 Logging in fire-affected forests out in far East Gippsland right upstream from very recent Giant Burrowing Frog records. Some of our most precious and endangere...d animals are still being logged by the Dan Andrews government. Its been nearly a year since the catastrophic fires and nothing has been doing to stop the destruction of forests. The government hasn't fulfilled any of their promises to put in better protections for wildlife and forests post-fires.

22.01.2022 Check our new report about the massive fires that happened in The Amazon in 2019. Transnational corporations have sought to expand their territorial control of the Amazon for decades. Year after year, they encroach deeper into the world’s greatest tropical rainforest, expanding agriculture and mining, and pursuing the false solutions offered by ‘green capitalism’, such as large dams, carbon capture and storage, and other emissions offsetting projects. They have been enabled i...n recent years by the government of Jair Bolsonaro. https://www.foei.org//burning-amazonia-eu-mercosur-free-tr

22.01.2022 Nuclear power is going no where. But some politicians keep banging the pro nukes drum....

22.01.2022 Among its many recommendations, the bushfire royal commission called for the establishment of a national recovery agency. It's good to see the federal government has acted on this one. 'A national disaster recovery agency designed to prepare Australians to deal with floods, droughts, fire and cyclones will get advice from a new Australian Climate Service, which will anticipate risks from climate change.'... https://www.smh.com.au//new-climate-service-to-help-austra

20.01.2022 Please make a submission to this important process.

20.01.2022 Hard to believe this has happened for so long: 'The locked gates protecting Sydney's water catchment are helping conceal the legacy of mining damage to Aboriginal cultural heritage sites along the Illawarra escarpment.' Indigenous leaders have not been able to access significant sites for decades, and in some cases not at all.... https://www.abc.net.au//illawarra-indigenous-site/12717976

19.01.2022 It is good to see the Victorian Liberals and Nationals join community groups and traditional owners in opposing the AGL gas import facility proposed for Westernport Bay. However, they are incorrect to say the moratorium on gas drilling is driving prices up. The VIC Gov's own gas report shows that allowing onshore drilling will not bring down prices. https://reneweconomy.com.au/victorian-liberal-nationals-op/

18.01.2022 A good piece from Luke Hilakari, the Secretary of Victorian Trades Hall Council. It is based on polling that Trades Hall recently commissioned. 'Action on climate change is already happening, whether we like it or not. The choice we all have to make is whether we want to be active participants in that change, securing quality, well-paid jobs for a transitioning workforce, or do we bury our heads in the sand and see investment in these new opportunities siphoned off overseas a...nd good jobs replaced by low-paid, insecure work?' 'Most of us, in most jobs and in most communities, want our governments to show genuine leadership and facilitate a smoother transition to a low carbon economy'. https://medium.com/@trade/transitionfromcrisis-58162bb46bd1

18.01.2022 We agree with Richard. Australia should have a publicly owned air fleet. With fire seasons getting longer in both hemispheres, the cost of leasing air craft will only go up. Time to get a national feel here. https://www.foe.org.au/firefighting

18.01.2022 This is excellent news. There has been a strong and determined campaign by the local community and led by Mine-free Glenaladale against this mine. Good to see the local Council backing the community. https://twitter.com/JarrodWhitta/status/1333692908101279744

17.01.2022 This is a powerful article by Matt Craigan an oil and gas worker from Aberdeen, Scotland. Both in the UK and here in Australia, workers in oil and gas are sayin...g they want the opportunity to work in renewable energy industries like offshore wind. New research by Friends of the Earth Scotland has found more than half of the sector's workers in the UK want to work in offshore wind and renewable energy. Here in Australia, the Maritime Union is calling on the Morrison government to Stop Blocking Offshore Wind and bring offshore clean energy laws to Parliament. With the Star of the South offshore wind farm on the table in Gippsland, Victoria will need an industry plan to maximize job creation, offer industry training and ensure workers in fossil fuels have opportunity in offshore wind too. 17.01.2022 Govts are now making decisions that will have big implications for job creation and our ability to tackle the climate crisis. Will you join the call for PM Scott Morrison (ScoMo) to increase ambition on climate & jobs? SIGN THE OPEN LETTER > foe.org.au/climate_leadership... Now more than ever, govts need to hear from the community!

17.01.2022 Despite the best efforts by the nuclear industry, the fact remains that uranium mining is not supported by the community. It is unsafe, unwanted - way too expensive - and unnecessary.

17.01.2022 Yesterday climate action groups across Gippsland in VIC ran a Where are Darren and Russell on Climate Change? covid safe protest. The protesters wore masks and practiced social distancing, whilst displaying signs and placards on various aspects of the issue. They were highlighting the silence of local federal members of the House of Reps Darren Chester of Gippsland and Russell Broadbent of Monash on climate change. http://petergardner.info//where-are-darren-and-russell-cl/

16.01.2022 AGL Energy owns the Loy Yang coal-burning power plant and is the biggest polluter in Victoria. AGL's annual general meeting is coming up in a week... Will the company express support for the Dan Andrews govt's climate policies during the AGM?

16.01.2022 Sixty five new trains are being built for Victoria by a firm that is part of China's controversial Belt and Road initiative. The firm is also linked to using Uighur people under coercive labor conditions. The overseas manufacturing is taking away local jobs which could've been undertaken in Ballarat or Dandenong. The trains are running 18 months behind schedule as trains have arrived from China with significant faults.... Luba Grigorovitch, secretary of the RTBU Victoria, said in October 2019 that the state government was allowing the rail consortium to "prioritise meeting deadlines at the expense of local jobs." We say #buildthemhere https://www.theage.com.au//melbourne-s-new-trains-being-bu

14.01.2022 Bad news. The federal Coalition continues to refuse to act on climate change. Good news. The states and territories are getting on with it.

14.01.2022 Forests are not furnaces!! Hunter Valley Redbank Power Station is looking to reboot itself with biomass from NSW native forests. This is likely to include wood from the Pilliga and key koala habitat from up the east coast. It will make it Australia’s most polluting coal-fired power station and in the Worlds top ten largest biomass power plants. It is a huge threat to our struggling wildlife, climate, water and health. ... 09.01.2022 Hearings for our court case against Shell will start today in The Netherlands. A court in The Hague will hear claims that Royal Dutch Shell has broken Dutch law by knowingly hampering the global phase-out of fossil fuels, in a case that could force the company to reduce its CO2 emissions. Lawyers for a consortium led by Friends of the Earth Netherlands will argue on the first of four days of public hearings on Tuesday that Shell has been aware for decades of the damage it has... inflicted and is acting unlawfully by expanding its fossil fuel operations. #StopShell https://www.theguardian.com//shell-in-court-over-claims-it

07.01.2022 There will be same sector jobs for oil and gas workers once we start building the Star of the South (SotS) offshore wind project.
