25.01.2022 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING This meeting will be held on the 11th September 2017 at 7.30 pm in the old Council Chambers. Some committee members will be standing down so we would love to see some new faces. We will need to fill two executive positions, President and Secretary.

25.01.2022 Guess what! The whales or rather at the moment a whale is 200m off shore from Ocean Drive near Anna Catherine heading towards Griffiths Island. The Southern R...ight is currently breaching. The Season has started YAY! Our friends are back. The Flag is flying on Fiddlers Green or will be shortly. See more

24.01.2022 The next working bee for Griffiths Island will be on Sunday 18th June. Volunteers will meet as usual at the Rotunda starting at 10am. We welcome anyone who has an interest in the Island, so if you can spare a couple of hours please come along. The intent is to perform Buckthorn removal between the Rotunda and the Passage.

23.01.2022 The foundations for the sculpture are underway. The ground has been prepared for the footings.

22.01.2022 We are having a working bee this Sunday the 10th September starting at 10.00 am. We will be giving the rotunda a spring clean and planting the area around the foundations of one of the sculptures. Please bring along some gardening tools or if preferred some cleaning supplies.

21.01.2022 The shearwaters have flown north and the weather chilled, but there is still plenty of activity on Griffiths Island. A Lions/Fogi Working-Bee in May tackled some much needed repairs and improvements which included tree-guards, repair & re-painting of signs and a general clean-up. Some dedicated persons continue this work in their own time. Another Working-Bee is planned for July 17 with further details shortly.

17.01.2022 The rare white flowered Australian Hollyhock, found only on the island.

16.01.2022 Pied Oystercatchers.

16.01.2022 When visiting Griffiths Island, keep a lookout for an Echidna. There have been recent sightings, with one in particular strolling along the beach by the lighthouse.

16.01.2022 Great to have a newcomer to our most recent Working Bee. The main task was to cut out the smothering Boxthorn which looks so pretty when covered in red berries, but which conceals nasty thorns. This weed is prolific and needs regular monitoring. Please think about joining FOGI which is a one-off fee of $15.00. We would welcome your help, and value your interest in keeping the island a well maintained natural attraction. You can be a financial member with no further obligation. See form above.

15.01.2022 Many people are interested in the fox situation at Griffiths Island. See note below from Richard Hodgens, Moyne Shire Council.

14.01.2022 Some of the bird life found on the Island.

13.01.2022 Working Bee Sunday 7th May To keep the Island in good order we have a number of working bees per year. More volunteers are always welcome. We will be cleaning up the treed area and relocating some tree guards. We meet at the rotunda at 10.00 am and finish at 12.00 so only a couple of hours work. If you can spare a few hours we would love to see you. Bring your gardening gloves.

12.01.2022 Yesterday was disappointing. But Im hopeful. For those who dont know, were currently trying to introduce the nations strictest political donation laws in Vi...ctoria. Our bill will end the influence of big money in politics and ban major, foreign and secret political donations. But yesterday, the Liberals announced that they will vote against it. (Surprise, surprise.) This isnt the end of the road. Vested interests should know this: Our Government wont stand for a return to the bad old days of brown paper bags, when developers and corporations had the ability to pay for Cabinet decisions. Were going to keep trying to get this bill passed. Were going to stop dodgy donations and fix the donation regime once and for all.

12.01.2022 At last! Friday 13/10/17 and the shearwaters are soaring on Griffiths Island. Installation was quite a battle against strong wind.

12.01.2022 Some of the interesting rock formations on the island.

10.01.2022 Lots of interesting things to do and see in Port Fairy and Griffiths Island! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoxuQLTgWDM

10.01.2022 This is one of the reasons we have to protect our native fauna on Griffiths Island.

09.01.2022 Even the tree guards can be sculptural.

09.01.2022 Just reminding you that Griffiths Islands adult Shearwaters are due to depart for the northern hemisphere (Pacific migration), any day from now. They follow a fairly predictable pattern of departing between 11-20th April. The young birds will not follow the parent birds for another 2-3 weeks. How amazing! Ive heard (but not seen) that the young birds depart early morning.

09.01.2022 Dear Friends of Griffiths Island the proposed working bee for next Sunday 16th July has been cancelled due to wet weather. Not to worry we have another one planned for September. We will keep you posted.

08.01.2022 Saddened to see this beautiful dead owl near lighthouse. A second one nearby with head eaten away

07.01.2022 To all Friends of Griffiths Island members. We need volunteers, from FOGI members to help conduct tours of the Lighthouse over the Aust. Day Weekend, 28/29th Jan 2017. This is our only fundraiser each year. If you have a couple of hours to spare, please contact Linda Carson on 5568 1797.

07.01.2022 A huge thank you to our Port Fairy Community Bank for their generous donation of $1000 towards the Shearwater Sculpture Project.

07.01.2022 Closure of Griffiths Island for Fox shoot Council advises that Warrnambool Field and Game Inc. will undertake a fox shoot at Griffiths Island, Port Fairy on Wednesday 17 May 2017 from 6pm until 11pm.... Members of the public will be unable to access Griffiths Island during this time. The fox shoot is a part of Councils annual program to control fox numbers on the Island. An authorised representative will be in attendance at the Rotunda/Causeway during this time to provide face to face information on the fox shoot and prevent public access to the area. Queries in regard to this fox shoot should be directed to Anthony Evans, Warrnambool Field and Game Inc. on 0419 103 885 or alternatively Richard Hodgens, Moyne Shire Council Environment Officer, on 0418 566 294.

06.01.2022 When visiting Griffiths Island, keep a lookout for our local residents.

06.01.2022 I spotted this map of Griffiths Island in the Rotunda. Now I know where those quaintly named places such as Puddeny Grounds, and Dusty Miller Hill, are! On Saturday 21/05, I listened to a very informative talk about the early local whaling industry, at the Historical Society rooms, followed by an associated tour of Griffiths Is. Great to see the mens crew in a whaleboat.

03.01.2022 There is always something to see when walking the Island.

03.01.2022 The Lighthouse is open this weekend between 10.30 & 4.30, bookings at the rotunda.

03.01.2022 The Port Fairy lighthouse looks wonderful at any time of year, but particularly when offset by dark blue seas and bright sunshine. Third and fourth photos were taken from inside the lighthouse. Rotary is hosting lighthouse open-days this weekend (Oct 29th, 30th).

02.01.2022 The working bee last Sunday was very successful with a good number of volunteers giving their time. It was nice to see so many new faces and people who have a love of the Island. The garden bed by the rotunda is now clear of weeds and ready for the installation of part of the sculpture. Tree guards where revamped with some trees doing well. Signage was attended to. The next working bee is June 18th.
