06.01.2022 On this day in 1938, William Cooper led a protest march against Kristallnacht from Footscray to the German consulate in Melbourne. Both Aboriginal and Jewish cultures are rich in storytelling. We share our histories with our children through song and speech so even when our homes are taken we can carry our culture with us. Sarah Gory from Meanjin Quarterly William Cooper was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian Aborigines League and, later, of National Abo...rigines Day, which is still celebrated in its current incarnation as NAIDOC Week. He led the march to deliver the signed petition condemning Kristallnacht, even though he himself suffered regularly from discrimination and marginalisation. There was no hidden motive to William Cooper’s protest. It was one of solidarity; it was a radical act of empathy. Earlier this year we got Yorta Yorta musician Allara Pattison talking with Melbourne based Jewish musician and producer Arik Blum about the legacy activist Uncle William Cooper has left behind and how it still lives on. https://youtu.be/FGkulF8bEIg Watch

05.01.2022 What are your thoughts about separating the art from the artist? Who has the ‘right’ to tell a particular story? How much can you 'embellish' and still say that something is true? How does telling your story affect the people who are part of it? Is it OK that Dustin Hoffman played Rain Main? Could Jojo Rabbit have been written by someone who wasn't Jewish? How do we process writers divulging their family secrets (or lies) in their art? ... We are fascinated by these questions around storytelling, so we present you with Spun Stories for the third time with this stellar line up - telling their stories live in person and via our new FOJAM TV on Wednesday 2 June at Howler! The Line-Up includes: Ramona Koval, Alice Chipkin, Joel Ma (Joelistics), Thabani Tshuma, Roz Bellamy, Jack Latimore and moderated by Elsa Tuet-Rosenberg an educator, facilitator, activist, performer, and a winner of Australia’s coveted 30 under 30 awards for LGBTQIA+ role models and leaders in 2020. Watch it in person at Howler, or Live via FOJAM TV. Live Event - Howler, Brunswick - Wed 2 June, Doors 7.30pm. Live Stream - FOJAM TV - Wed 2 June - Sunday 6 June. via fojam.com #storyslam #howler #fojam #poetry #spokenwordmelbourne #cancelculture #archermagazine #deathoftheauthor #cultural-appropriation #lgbtqia+ #culturaldiversity #jewishartists
