14.01.2022 Giving thanks to Star Weekly and Goya Dmytryshchak for this article of invitation regarding Newport Drummers-M Newport Drummers, a new group started by the Newp...ort Fiddle and Folk Club, is helping people with mental health, dementia and plain enjoyment of music. Master drummer, Martin Case, said he graduated Berklee College of Music and was trying to find a function of music in society and our community. People are starving and dying in the world and here I am with a music degree, and I started really thinking about that and I met a man named Kwabena Owusu who turned me on to West African drumming and community drumming, he said. One of the things I really enjoy about West African drumming is you have to listen to each other for the drumming to work. One of the things that West African drums does is it takes young people without focus, gives them discipline. It also helps people living with dementia, slows down that development. And helps alleviate depression, Parkinson’s disease, all these things. So, for me, especially in a post-COVID world, what I did was gathered a bunch of drums and said to my community: rally. The group meets Thursdays from 7.30-9pm at Newport Community Hub. The first class is free and drums can be provided. Details: 0401 889 743 or m@ martincasemediaproductons.com

06.01.2022 Newport is just getting going as we approach the middle of the year. Last week was the first Newport Jazz Festival (huge succcess) and the first Cars Coffee and Motorbikes Meet over at Hall Street. The Cars n Coffee n MBikes meet was such a hit that they are back again on Sunday May 30 from 8 am to 11. Might even be some live music. Great to see the traders getting together to keep Newport at the centre of life in Melbourne! Who would have thought? Newport Traders Association
