24.01.2022 Hi all, Here are the latest government guidelines on dancing with respect to COVID-19. As you can see, we're fine with our dances. We just need to be careful to ensure that no food is consumed in the same room whilst dancing is going on, so we'll clear away the supper before resuming dancing after supper. We hope to see you this evening for a great deal of fun at our Contra and Square Dance with Moonshine Whiskers and the Ragged Pony (https://www.facebook.com/events/3479072...828781225) David and Cathy, Folk Federation Dance Organisers. Update on dancing restrictions From https://coronavirus.tas.gov.au//important-community-updates Published 28 August 2020 Restrictions remain in place for dancing in all venues where food and alcohol is consumed because of the increased risk of close contact, particularly where alcohol is consumed, and difficulty of tracing contact among patrons. This restriction will be in place at least until the end of 2020. Dancing will only be permitted when it is pre-arranged, held in a separate room to where food and alcohol is consumed and contact information is recorded. For example, the following could occur: a pre-arranged dance class in a separate room of a pub; dance classes or dancing in a community hall; and water, tea, coffee and other non-alcoholic drinks could be consumed in the same room as a dance class or dancing. The only other exception is dancing at a wedding reception. The wedding couple, their parents/guardians and other bridal party members can dance. The management of risk associated with these activities must also be covered in a venue’s COVID-19 Safety Plan. If someone hires a venue, such as a community hall, they share with the venue owner/operator the responsibility for managing dance and other activities, including physical distancing and facilitating a safe entry and exit to the premises. 19.01.2022 As the Crow Flies - house concert, 9th May As the Crow Flies is returning to the folk music scene of Hobart to bring you a special concert for Mother's Day on Sunday 9th of May. They are looking forward to sharing a selection of their favourite tunes along with many original compositions and arrangements. Come along for a relaxing afternoon full of good company and toe-tapping music performed by Emily Wolfe (violin), Rebecca Manral (violin), Violet Harrison-Day (violin) and I...saac Gee (double bass). The Crows have only just returned after a prolonged break. They played a wonderful set for our contra dance a week or so ago. Now we have the pleasure of seeing them up close and personal in a house concert. If you've not been to a house concert before, it's a fantastic opportunity to experience live music in an intimate setting. Location: West Moonah. Address advised upon booking. 3:30 for 4pm start. Bring a plate of vegetarian finger food to share after the concert if you'd like to stay. Limited spaces. Tickets $15 at https://events.humanitix.com/asthecrowflies

19.01.2022 Hello there Folks! It's been a while! Shall we organise another night out? Dinner and a show? With some absolutely incredible musicians? Give me a call, love t...o hear from you 0400467317 Friday 30 April Ruth Hazleton with Fiona Steele & Luke Plumb The old Black Stump (Gowrie Park) Dinner & Show $55 - Bookings only Phone Dom 0400467317 One of Australia’s most highly regarded folk singers, Ruth Hazleton is a multi-award-winning instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. In a career spanning over twenty-five years, she has recorded and toured nationally and internationally with numerous acts including long term musical partner Kate Burke and Dev’lish Mary. Ruth has also been privileged to work with some of the world’s most iconic folk & roots musicians including Andy Irvine (IRE Planxty), Nancy Kerr & The Sweet Visitor Band (UK 2015 BBC Folk Singer of the Year), James Keelaghan (Canada) & Bruce Molsky (USA). Equipped with an electric guitar tuned to DADGAD and an open-back 5-string banjo, Ruth began her solo journey in 2019, releasing Daisywheel, produced by acclaimed Tasmanian musician and composer Luke Plumb (Shooglenifty). The album was recently nominated for ‘Best Folk Album 2020’ at the Music Victoria Awards and has been described as "...compelling and intimately fierce" (Living Tradition - UK). Daisywheel is a lyrical voyage of history, struggle & resilience in song; a confluence of ancient and contemporary and a cross-cultural zeitgeist. At times unapologetically political, the repertoire incorporates the many influences that have shaped Ruth’s musicianship over the years, escaping strict boundaries of genre. There are flavours of Celtic trad, old-time American music, Eastern European & Middle Eastern music. Intrinsic to her musical identity, Ruth also works as a rogue folklorist and oral historian and is a committed activist and advocate for independent music and folk culture in Australia. She is joined on stage in Tasmania by guitarist Fiona Steel (GraceJean) and Luke Plumb on mandolin and bouzouki. [a] peerless command of traditional musicpushed outwards into beautiful new territory. ~ Jeff Lang See more

19.01.2022 Survey link for workers in creative and cultural industries ('workers' includes volunteers and those who organise things as well as artists) One of the Folk Federation's members sent in the following.... Hi David As a participant in The Tasmania Project (University of Tasmania) I have been sent a link relating to workers in the creative and cultural industries and invited to forward the link to anyone working in the sector. Is this a suitable item to send out on the email list/Folk Fed website and if so could you do this? I thought that we have many members who would be well qualified to have their opinions heard and considered. Regards... For this component of the research, we are partnering with the Tasmania Government's Department of State Growth to understand the impact of the pandemic on Tasmania's creative and cultural industries and individuals who work in the sector. A report, based on de-identified survey and interview data, will be provided to the Department of State Growth’s Cultural and Tourism Development area to support policy development in these unpredictable times. If you are a Tasmanian resident over the age of 18 who identifies as working in the creative or cultural industries, please complete the survey at the link below. If you know someone who works in the sector, please forward the link to them. The survey will close at midnight Sunday 23 August 2020. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CCITasmania

12.01.2022 Still a few places up for grabs for my workshop starting on Tuesday! Book your spot while you still can! SCOTTISH AND SCANDINAVIAN TUNES ON ZOOM! Hi everybody! ...I am very excited to announce that I will be running online Scottish and Scandinavian tune workshops in the run up to Christmas, with a view to doing more after Christmas should there be enough interest. The workshops will be for all instruments at intermediate level and above, and will focus mainly on repertoire with some technical pointers where necessary. I am a highly experienced fiddle teacher and performer with over 15 years experience under my belt. I was fortunate enough to be part of the SNAP (Sweden, North Pennines and Ploermel) music exchange programme which consisted of musicians from Halsingland in Sweden, Brittany and the North of England. It's fair to say SNAP kickstarted my love for Scandinavian music and I was taught by some of the best folk musicians from Sweden who were truly inspiring. I would love to have the opportunity to pass on the tunes and skills that I have learned over the years. I have a broad knowledge of Scottish traditional music and I am now based in Glasgow, Scotland. I am part of iconic Scottish band, the Tannahill Weavers, with whom I have toured with internationally including the US and Canada. I attended Lews Castle College UHI where I studied under Anna-Wendy Stevenson, Iain MacDonald of Battlefield Band fame and many other luminaries of the Scottish music scene. The workshops will begin on November 17 and will run through until December 14. They will run weekly from 6pm until 7pm UK time and will cost 40 for four workshops. If you wish to sign up or have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch via my website. See more

11.01.2022 We had a rehearsal with Luke, Rachel, Dave and Fred last night and the music was to-die-for. We are so lucky to have such amazing musicians to play for us at the Klezmer + Balfolk dance party on Saturday the 26th. Come along and enjoy traditional Eastern European Klezmer dances and wonderful French and Quebecois dances, including An Dro, Mazurka, Zelda and Le Cotillon. It'll be a party, so dress fancily if you can (but you're welcome whatever you're wearing). Fancy = classy, flamboyant, whimsical, outrageous, or even zany.

10.01.2022 Dancers and listeners alike are in for a treat tonight as mandolin virtuoso Luke Plumb (from Shooglenifty), Klezmer and experimental fiddler and accordionist Rachel Meyers and Dave McNamara and special guest Fred Pribac on double bass, take to the stage once more to celebrate the inspiring, emotional and exciting music of the Klezmer and Balfolk traditions. All dances taught. No dancing experience or partner required but you're welcome to bring either. $19 / $17 (conc)/... $16 (mem) / $10 (f/t student) by credit card, preferably beforehand at events.humanitix.com/klezbal Dress fancy - it's a party! Will your outfit be: 1. Classy, 2. Flamboyant, 3. Whimsical, 4. Outrageous, or 5. Zany? Of course it's not essential to dress up, but it adds to the fun, so be creative. https://www.facebook.com/events/303617337413248 ... here's a video of a Balfolk dance, Zelda, which we'll be doing tonight.
