22.01.2022 Almost 100 years ago Jack Heward (Poppa) returned from the war and planted our orchard in the Riverland. In the year I was born, 50 years ago Mum and Dad ‘offi...cially’ took over ‘the block’, planting more figs, quinces and pecans along the way. Four years ago I returned to the Riverland with Mark and Frankie, always a country kid at heart. Singing Magpie Produce was born, after a centenary of fruit growing. In a world of large scale farming, we remain focussed on our family farm, minimising our environmental footprint and on water use, in this land of drought. The quest always remains - to be able to grow bloody great figs and quinces (amongst other things). Thankyou delicious. Australia and Harvey Norman for today acknowledging our journey along the way. We are thrilled to be a Gold winner for our semi sun dried Black Genoa figs in the 2020 awards. Thankyou to Tawnya Bahr and @PaulBaker for nominating us and believing in us all the way. @ChefMattMoran we love that you loved our ‘standout’ dried figs too. 13.01.2022 F&B recipient of the week - Peta Baverstock from Cuvée Co Wines Peta Baverstock in the winemaker and creative behind the newly launched, premium made Cuvée Co Wines and is all about championing Australian Sparkling Wine. Only bubbles are made in the range and with incredible fruit, comes incredible fizz. The cuvées in the range have fruit sourced from the Limestone Coast of South Australia where Peta resides. The wine labels have unique artwork by Adelaide based Artist, Dan T...omkins. Peta learnt her craft working with world renowned Sparkling Winemaker, Ed Carr for almost a decade, has been a finalist numerous times in The Vin de Champagne Award, named in the 2019 Top 50 Young Gun of Wine Awards and is the owner of a freelancing Sparkling Winemaking business, Cuvée Consult. In 2018, Peta completed the Business SA, Encore program with the assistance of the Food and Beverage Development Fund. After making wine for close to 20 years and then venturing into her own label, Peta knew a business course would be invaluable and was recognised with the most outstanding business plan in the Encore class of 2018. It is about the product, the financial bottom line, the marketing and a thousand other things, but in particular, it is a lot about the culture you bring to the brand. The mentors I met left me with their expertise and friendship and has meant Cuvée-Co Wines will be more of a success into the future. 09.01.2022 F&B recipient of the week - Pete Mann from Octeine Coffee Petes story: A former school teacher just cruising through life. Not unhappy but definitely searching for more. Enter coffee, and the fascination around flavour and experience. Coupled with a love of learning, a spark for business was born. Experience was sought, through working at SA cafes and coffee roasteries. Further study was required! Food and Beverage Development Fund was introduced, and once a successful recip...ient, Pete was able to learn from the best. Anne Cooper, a master roaster, who conducts a monthly coffee roasting course in Melbourne and Pete, thanks to F&B, was able to attend. Along with coffee roasting training, Pete was able to complete the SAYES course with Business SA. It was within this course that Octeine Coffee born. With a business plan in hand, and the support of F&B Pete opened his first cafe in Kent Town in 2019. Roasting his seasonal blend and Single Origin coffees from a warehouse in Welland. Fast forward 2 years and Octeine Coffee now has x4 locations. These include Kent Town, CBD, Torrensville (which operates under the name Canopy) and finally Octeine at Seppeltsfield. Octeine Coffee also supplies coffee beans on a wholesale basis to other cafes who are searching for a specialty offering, plus coffee beans online. Octeine's branding is what makes it different from the rest. The idea to create a brand based around outdoor activity and adventure was conceived during the SAYES course Pete completed with the support of F&B. Octane x Caffeine = Octeine. "the fuel for adventure". It is this core value which now directs Octeine forward. Cold pressed juices, protein smoothies, healthy(ish) treats are all produced under the Octeine banner and further expansion is on the way. But you'll just have to keep an eye out for that!
