24.01.2022 Happy National Banana Day! We’re so excited to celebrate National Banana Day with our fantastic banana program partners! Together, our amazing banana growers have donated just over 140,000kgs of bananas this year to Foodbank to ensure we have a continuous supply of delicious Aussie bananas every day to help many Aussies who are doing it tough right now. It’s thanks to our wonderful National Program partners Costa, LaManna Premier Group, Nutrana Produce Group, along with ...our freight partners Scott's Refrigerated Logistics, CHEP and Blenners Transport who help get this delicious fruit safely to South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria each week so that our Foodbank teams can make sure it gets to the 2,600 charities we source produce for. So today thank you to every banana grower, every banana picker and packer, every truck driver, forklift driver and everyone else involved in this important program which enables these delicious, yellow, convenient, nutritious bananas to get from the plantations, to the homes of vulnerable Aussies safely, every day. #Thankyou #ZeroHunger #NationalBananaDay #Foodbanking #FoodRelief #FreshAussieBananas #FreshIsBest #WarOnWaste #goodmoodfood #AustralianBananas

24.01.2022 Today is International Day of Charity. Originally a day to commemorate Mother Teresas death and the tireless humanitarian work she did, International Day of Charity on September 5 was declared by the UN as international day in 2012. Today reminds us that simple acts of charity can help others and together, create a more inclusive society. ... Foodbank works with a wonderful network of 2,400 charities who have preserved through one of the toughest years on record. Thank you to all the charities big or small, the volunteers, and everyone involved who help us fight hunger in Australia. To coincide with International Day of Charity, the Australian Mint has created the Donation Dollar. Starting today and over the coming years, one special charity dollar will be minted for every single Australian, creating millions of reminders to give. If each Australian donated just one Donation Dollar a month, together wed raise an additional $300 million for charity each and every year. Find out more about the Donation Dollar in the video below, or to make a donation direct to Foodbank visit www.foodbank.org.au. bit.ly/3jKA9tf #thankyou #ZeroHunger #InternationalDayofCharity

22.01.2022 What a day the team at Foodbank Victoria has had! They would give the crew at The Block a run for their money- getting this space in Melbourne CBD only last week and turning it around in record time, thanks to the team at Coles, to ensure international students from surrounding colleges and universities had access to fresh produce and culturally-sensitive food. The Foodbank Hunger Report 2020 revealed that 39% charities have seen an increase in the number of international students seeking food relief since the pandemic hit our shores. This Food Pantry will be open five days a week in Melbourne CBD, to help this vulnerable group through these tough times.

22.01.2022 Today is World Environment Day. We have one planet. This planet gives us air, water and provides us with food, but we need to look after this planet. But it only takes one person to make a difference, lets help make this beautiful planet of ours thrive. Its #TimeForNature... AND...in other news...how fantastic are wonky carrots!!! 22.01.2022 HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP Whats not to love about a day dedicated to friendship, camaraderie, and being there for one another. This day was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the sole purpose of friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals inspiring peace and building bridges between communities. ... A simple act of kindness for a new or old friend can mean a lot. While many Australians are still restricted by distance and some in isolation, now is the perfect time to reach out - Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, call or if allowed, share a meal or a hot cuppa or go for a walk. Never under estimate the power of human interaction, whether it be through a device or face to face. Despite devastating droughts, floods, a global pandemic and massive market upheaval, they continue to join us in the fight against hunger. 19.01.2022 Foodbank is proud to be a member of the newly formed Stop Food Waste Australia group, with the goal to halve the millions of tonnes of food that ends up in landfill every year - by 2030. Every year, we throw away more than 7.3 million tonnes of food, costing our economy more than $20 billion and on average, households are throwing away up to $3800 of food a year. Food waste also has a knock on effect that hurts our farmers and growers - wasting the precious resources it tak...es to produce our country's beautiful food. Foodbank works with the entire food and grocery industry and can rescue large amounts of food and groceries at any stage in the supply chain. Whether it's wonky fruit or veg, or product packaging not as planned, chances are we can accept it and ensure it goes to those who need it most - our most vulnerable. We can all make a difference, whether you're one person being creative with leftovers, or an organisation with excess food and groceries, we can stop food waste and help feed hungry bellies. #ZeroHunger #waronwaste #StopFoodWasteAustralia

18.01.2022 Happy World Pasta Day! This pantry staple is a much loved part of the Foodbank family, and we have great local businesses manufacturing it just for us here in Australia. 06.01.2022 Today is #StopFoodWasteDay Australians waste 7.3 million tonnes of food every year, valued at a staggering $20billion. On average, Australians throw out one shopping bag of food a month! We can do better than that! ... Aussie households can save up to $3,000 a year by reducing household food waste, simply by following a few tips: Buy only what you need. Don't get sucked into 'specials' and 'buy one get one free' deals. Check the 'Best Before' date or 'Use By' date and make sure you can use it before it expires. Fun fact - a 'Best Before' date is not a date you throw food out by, it just means the quality can't be guaranteed past that date but is still safe to eat, unlike 'Use By' date which should be followed for food safety reasons. Buy fresh produce that's in season - it will be cheaper, fresher and sourced locally. Make a meal plan for the week and shop for only the ingredients needed. Check out what you might already have in the fridge or pantry and see what you can make using only a handful of ingredients. We'd love to hear any more tips about how your household saves on food waste! Foodbank is an active participant in Stop Food Waste Australia and the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre which are both committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (12.3) of halving food waste by 2030. #ZeroHunger #ZeroWaste #WarOnWaste #BillionDollarWasteProblem

05.01.2022 Lest we forget. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning ... We will remember them." Today we think about all the servicemen and women who have fought and protected our country and continue to do so. Thank you for your service. It is more important than ever to protect indigenous peoples and their knowledge. ... Foodbank works with many Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander groups across the country through food relief, school breakfast programs and nutrition advice. We continue to work together, learn about traditional methods and how they can help our country move together as one. 03.01.2022 Foodbank is here to help no matter the distance. The Aboriginal Corporation School nutrition program in Yirrkala, 650km from Darwin, put in an emergency request for breakfast supplies and Foodbank NT came to the rescue. Foodbank NT, with support from Sanitarium Health Food Company, South32 and Nighthawk Transport, delivered a pallet of Weetbix this week to the region - Laynhapuy Homelands, east Arnhem Land. The journey itself is an 11 hour road trip which was made possible... thanks to the subsidised and discounted freight and donated product. Thank you to these wonderful organisations. Without their support, our capacity to respond to these important and much-needed requests would be virtually impossible. It is more important more than ever we work together to eliminate hunger in the Northern Territory and across this wonderful country of ours. #ZeroHunger #Community #SchoolBreakfastProgram #WeetBix The Global FoodBanking Network
