11.01.2022 Everywhere I turn there are urgent and important conversations being had surrounding post COVID trade, and we can all agree it’s straight up business survival right now. But I’m all too aware that your business can survive COVID19 and still end up barrelling straight into trouble town What kind of trouble? The humankind! Human Relations are a historically challenging area in hospitality, the pandemic won’t have changed that and a lot of owner operators would tell you it’s p...robably THE most challenging aspect of operations. One lessson I learnt the hard way with my team was how to rebuild a culture by having to clean out a very toxic one first that was an intense learning curve unfortunately it was also a very expensive lesson and an emotional one that pushed the boundaries in terms of how far I would go to stand up for what I believed in that good culture mattered and was worth fighting for. That lesson left a mark but helped me define some of the really important responsibilities of being a business owner. I know now that it’s easier to commit up front and put a system in place, than it is to clean up messy HR issues and negative cultures that contribute nothing to productivity or profits! Do a simple audit into how you hire and onboard your employees, as well as what operational policies and procedures you have in place. I know there are so many competing priorities right now, but taking the time to ask these questions will help you see if there are any gaps in your processes. Knowing exactly what you’re lacking is awesome from here you can move forward it gives you direction! So Have you got accurate job descriptions? Do you have a system to manage performance management issues effectively? Do your staff know what they can and can't do? Do you onboard your staff with each new hire?
