22.01.2022 Native plants instead of herbicides? It's an awkward part of the vineyard to manage and one that is usually controlled with chemical sprays, but a Hastings vineyard is looking to nature in the battle against weeds under the vines.

21.01.2022 Herald Sun article Friday 26 June. Sorry I don't subscribe, here's the content. Moira Southeast council cancels controversial weed killer following cancer link Frankston has joined a growing number of Victorian councils to ditch weed killer Roundup, containing an ingredient which has been linked to cancer. And the announcement precedes controversial comments the chemical is safe.... Another Melbourne council has ditched controversial weed killer Roundup as its manufacturer agreed to pay almost $16 billion to settle lawsuits linking it to cancer. Frankston Councils announcement precedes overnight revelations that manufacturer Bayer agreed to pay a whopping $15.8 billion to settle around 95,000 lawsuits claiming it caused the disease in the US. The southeast council stopped using the chemical at playgrounds, preschools and maternal child health centres on January 1, with the final spray elsewhere across the region set for July 1. Residents have been warned they may see more of the wild plants as council moves to tackle them by hand. Despite the huge US payout, Australian agriculture minister David Littleproud today insisted the weed killer containing active ingredient glyphosate was safe. He said labelling standards were different to Australia and was confident the governments agricultural chemical regulator had provided the right directions. Our regulations and our regulatory reform has been as robust as anyone else in the world, he told reporters in Brisbane. Im confident that if Australians continue to use it as per the label, it is perfectly safe. In August last year, a Mont Albert mum feared her five-year-old son had been poisoned by glyphosate after high levels of the chemical were found in his system when he broke out with a rash and indigestion. In September, a Kew mother said she was devastated after she, her child and their dog were accidentally soaked in the weed killer by Boroondara Council contractors. Kingston City Council, which neighbours the Frankston region on the north side, wiped out the spray in November last year. Council staff and contractors instead increased hand weeding, brush cutting and mulching of garden beds to suppress weeds (after January 1) these actions will be rolled out across the rest of the city, Frankston Mayor Cr Sandra Mayer told the Leader. We will also increase roadside mowing, trial steam weed control and consider park designs which reduce the need for herbicides, as well as researching and testing out low-risk herbicides. We believe by stopping the use of this herbicide, we are helping to protect our natural, coastal environment for future generations. [email protected] City of Boroondara? Cr. 19.01.2022 Great exercise in the garden: found this great backsaver video for weeding times :-) Dear All, how ya be? I'm still enjoying my own garden: weeding, pruning, planting and harvesting. ... Got really sore knees while doing that, especially the weeding, and looked up how to weed and save your back. Found that I shouldn't do more than 20-30 minutes at a time and use a kneeling pad, strong stick and a stool alternating, changing posies every few minutes there is a short video (5min) within this website on weeding properly: https://melioguide.com/act/weeding-the-garden-safety-tips/ but here are a few more pointers that I noted down: - squat for people with strong knees (unlike myself): you can use your left arm to sit on your left leg while weeding with the right, switch sides after a few minutes. - golfer's lift: use a stick about shoulder high and strong enough to hold you: take it in your left hand, bend down torso while lifting up left leg, weed with the right hand. Again switch sides after a few minutes. - kneeling on kneeling pad: switch between left, right and both legs, and you can also switch between legs further apart and legs closer together. - the stool is not shown in the video but in the article and it looks higher than the one I'm using (or should I say over-using?) - I have used an about 20cm high one (2 Hiko cells if you know them), the stool in the picture might be about chair height to a little lower. Have fun cheers, Petra.

13.01.2022 This week Bayer settled round-up lawsuits. $15.9 billion in payouts. Over 95,000 independent cases.... And City of Boroondara still use this product in our parks and gardens. Our gutters are sprayed (without warning or our consent twice annually). Your local council possibly is still using Round Up also? The world is waking up. Hopefully yOUR local councils in Australia will also? Times are changing. Moira Weedsteamers Cr. Cynthia Watson for Maranoa Ward https://www.abc.net.au//bayer-to-settle-roundup-l/12389978

07.01.2022 From 1 July, 2020 Frankston City Council ARE DISCONTINUING THE USE OF GLYPHOSATE as a method of weed control. AH-MAY-ZING. CONGRATULATIONS. THANK YOU! "Environmental care is our priority and we will continue moving towards a greener future". The decision is in line with actions being taken by progressive local governments across Australia and the world.... Read the FCC release here: https://bit.ly/3g3XQuE City of Boroondara are you a progressive Council? When will you cease use of glyphosate in our community? Moira

06.01.2022 A pandemic of possibility. When you are ready to listen, please do. This podcast will provide you with #hope. I also PRAY that ALL management and decision makers within local councils listen to this podcast. At a time when OUR immune systems are severely compromised it's beyond comprehension that quad bikes are (still) whizzing around our neighbourhoods spraying glyphosate into our gutters. No warnings are given to residents. ... "I aspire that we emerge from this planetary wake up call not as victims, but empowered -- armed with greater clarity to reimagine and actualise a better, more sustainable, purposeful, intentional and fulfilling life experience for ourselves, our loved ones, future generations and frankly the world at large." ~ Rich Roll City of Boroondara Moira

06.01.2022 Dear All, due to the pandemic we won't meet for a couple of weeks - if you live close you're welcome to weed on your own, or message us via facebook and we can perhaps organise a session of 2 with some distance. ... Harvesting of greens, herbs and tiny strawberries is still allowed. Personally, I have to take a couple of weeks off to fix some things of my own, then I will let you know about coming back (within the limits). Stay Safe Cheers, Petra.

06.01.2022 (Most) edible weeds have more nutritional content than the spinach you buy at the supermarkets. Identified correctly and with a few basic recipes, you could save your family a small fortune. Our local council, although they have provided weed workshops with the wonderful educator Doris Pozzi, continually use products containing glyphosate in public places. Fighting a losing battle. Compromising the health of yOUR community. City of Boroondara, while there are birds and wind... you will never win by spaying weeds. One councillor suggested I should be more concerned about our homeless than weed spraying. Ill happily volunteer to run cooking workshops so our most vulnerable have a continual supply of food! Lets work together for a more sustainable solution. Chick weed pesto anyone? Dandelion tea? Onion weed and potato soup? Blackberry pie? Want me to continue? Moira

05.01.2022 Weeding made easier by Costa Georgiadis - I find weeding quite creative, because I create space for preferred plants, and each time I come back, there are more plants we like than weeds :-) Cheers, Petra. (It's an article, not a video)

04.01.2022 This popped up in my (personal) newsfeed today. 31 July 2013. 7 years ago. Isn't this ironic. Don't you think? Please refer to previous post if confused.... #progress #weedsteaming Moira City of Boroondara Stonnington City Council Cr Garry Thompson Weedsteamers PS Do you (honestly) think? What you are REALLY doing to yOUR community by spraying glyphosate? PPS yOUR Food Forest is borders both Councils and a golf course hence the tag. 02.01.2022 ** IMPORTANT ** This beast was spotted at Chadstone Shopping Centre. See pics and text communication in comments.... This is (potentially) coming to a children's playground near you. We need to call/email City of Boroondara (or your local council) collectively tomorrow to confirm if this is happening in yOUR community. Ask / confirm what chemicals are being used when they do commence cleaning rounds of playgrounds. Your children will whizz down slides. They will inhale these chemicals. They will lick their fingers and digest these chemicals. Our children need protecting. Keep a paper trail with all communication please.
