22.01.2022 How often do you deliver feedback to your team? Many venue owners wait until it’s time for a performance review. But think about how your people see performance reviews.... They’re sitting across a table from you, and it all feels really heavy. They know that the entire session is dedicated to them and what they’re doing wrong. How overwhelming that must feel. Then they leave the session with one question running through their minds: Why didn’t they tell me about this earlier? When it comes to giving feedback, there’s a better way to do it. We call these pull asides. Let’s say that you spot a staff member, doing something wrong. Don't ignore the conversation that needs to happen at the moment. Be cool and pull them aside when they have a spare minute. Deliver your feedback quickly. Let them know how they can change, and conclude the conversation on a high note. This achieves two things. First, you’re taking the pressure out of the feedback situation. Second, you get a quicker result. If you wait until their review to give feedback, you're allowing them to mess up until then. By pulling them aside at that moment, you can create a change as soon as you see that something is wrong. That means you fix issues faster and develop a stronger relationship with your team by dealing with things quickly and with a cool head. When it comes to delivering feedback to your staff, the sooner, the better.

19.01.2022 The best approach is to give your feedback in a calm manner. Explain why you need things done in a certain way and good stuff that happens when your team does things your way.

19.01.2022 You can hire people to do frontline tasks or manage the staff. But nobody else can be the venue owner. Be a leader first.

12.01.2022 What comes to mind when you hear the phrase venue growth? So many venue owners will jump straight to exponential growth. They equate it to constantly increasing revenue. And they’re right. ... Well, sort of. You see, increasing revenue may be the growth vision for some venue owners. But that doesn’t mean you have to match their version of growth. Venue growth can mean a lot of different things. What it means to you depends on what you want out of your venue. Perhaps more money on the top line. Or maybe making your venue more efficient. Any forward momentum in your venue is a form of growth. So take a minute to think about what venue growth means to you. Write it down and remind yourself of it every day. Your vision may change over time. But what’s most important is that it’s your vision and nobody else’s!

09.01.2022 Your team is crucial to the success of your venue. If your relationship with your staff is solid, then you have a strong foundation for your venue’s success. But how do you create a strong relationship with your people?... We want to share a concept that we call Deposits and Withdrawals. If you get this right, it becomes a whole lot easier for you to get what you need from your crew. What is a Deposit? It’s about instilling goodwill with your team. It could be as simple as a high-five or a smile. Or perhaps acknowledging your staff for a job well done. Depositing goodwill is about recognising all the positives about your team and communicating it to them. When you make deposits to your team, you are filling them with pride and joy in their work. It’s a great way of showing that you care and respect them. All of these deposits will come back to benefit you. And this is where Withdrawals come in. You make a withdrawal when you ask someone for something out of the ordinary. For example, when somebody called in sick, you ask a couple of staff members to stay late. Because they feel their efforts are recognised and appreciated, these people will happily do it. Isn’t it great to have a team of people who are willing to go above and beyond? Think about it. The more deposits you make with your staff today, the more it will benefit you in the future.

03.01.2022 Communication is everything in the hospitality industry. Our relationship with our customers depends on it, and so does the relationship with our team. Of course, for example, if we run a busy restaurant, things can get chaotic. So, maybe we don't emphasise communication as much as we should. Or perhaps we’re not using the right channels or tone. But here's the thing we have to remember... If we want to lead more of an owner lifestyle, we have to take a step back, right? To have everything run smoothly in our absence, we have to be able to count on the people taking care of our venue. However, we have to be more open to communication to make all of this work. We have to be honest about what we want, our expectations, and everything else. Keep in mind that communication starts when we interview people for jobs at our hospitality venue. But we can't just hire a bunch of people, assign them roles, and then stop talking. Use the onboarding process to ensure that everyone gets the training they need to help our hospitality business grow. Pick one person that can supervise things while we’re away from the venue. Even if we can't talk to every staff member, we should at least talk to our supervisor. There are a couple of great things that happen once we start communicating clearly. To start with, our team makes fewer mistakes. The people who work for us will learn to function in our absence and learn to solve problems on their own. They'll also understand that they shouldn't bother us with the tiniest of problems. We have bigger things to think about and more important decisions to make about our venue’s sustainability and growth. But no one will understand any of it if we don't emphasise communication, including between our team members. Learn to step back but keep communication lines open.
