25.01.2022 Footmed Foot and Ankle Clinics - Adelaide: 83423131 Elizabeth Vale: 82524544 Murray Bridge: 85325744 Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in ...the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said." We are at our best when we serve others.

23.01.2022 Well done David

21.01.2022 The Footmed family have changed a little since this photo was taken in December last year. Tomika and Indiah have moved on to full time jobs in their chosen career fields. We have added a Clinical Manager, Sue, to our day surgery team. Vanessa has come on board as receptionist at our Elizabeth Vale practice and we have added another Podiatrist, Stephanie, who is also a nurse and works between Murray Bridge and the day surgery. We are so blessed to have such an amazing team working with us

15.01.2022 Remember this Kenyan runner Abel Mutai who was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed... the race. A Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening, started shouting at the Kenyan to continue running. Mutai didn't know Spanish and didn't understand. Realizing what was taking place, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A journalist asked Ivan, "Why did you do that?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win." The journalist insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his." The journalist insisted, and again asked, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied, "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor in that medal? What would my Mother think of that?" Values are passed on from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children? Let us not teach our kids the wrong ways and means to WIN. Instead, let us pass on the beauty and humanity of a helping hand. Because honesty and ethics are WINNING! See more

14.01.2022 Did you known that Mortons neuroma originate through adaptive changes & is actually not a true growth or tumor of nerve tissue? Microscopically we see cellular and/or structural changes to the nerve and the surrounding soft tissue structures. The histopathology tells us its not just the nerve itself that we are seeing cellular changes in but also the vascular structures, in particular the arteries where there is endarterial thickening with luminal narrowing. The schwann cell...s can show loss of cylinders from the nerve bundles or they may undergo proliferation depending on were the nerve is in terms of its injury. Adipose tissue can become necrotic, we can see areas of myxoid degeneration and there can infiltration of inflammatory cells in the bursal tissue. Despite all these findings a neuroma at the very least will always show PERINURAL FIBROSIS. #footandankle #growth #nerves #nervepain #footpain #footsurgery #podiatrists

10.01.2022 #didyouknow that a #heelspur is bony outgrowth of the heel bone and occurs in up to 15% of the general population? However, research has shown that heel spurs a... present in higher proportions in the elderly, people who are overweight and in those with #heelpain, #plantarfasciitis, #osteoarthritis and abnormal foot function. It is believed that heel spurs grow as a result of repetitive impact forces under the heel, such as walking and exercise. The average active person walks around 7,500 steps/day. If you maintain this daily average and live to the age of 80 years, then you’ll have walked about 5 times around the Earth and that’s a lot of cumulative impact force! Research has shown that there is a relationship between #heelspurs and pain under the heel. However! Research has also shown that some people with #heelspurs can have no #heelpain at all! Some factors that influence whether a #heelspur might cause #heelpain include the size of the spur, a person’s bodyweight, compression of a nerve under the heel, facture of the #heelspur, #inflammation, decrease in the fatty padding under the heel and a person’s occupational duties, such as prolonged weightbearing on hard surfaces. With an aging population and a rise in global #obesity, #heelspurs and #heelpain may become a worsening problem Do you have pain under your heel? 07.01.2022 Now that the football season is over, it’s time to get that niggling injury checked out. There is nothing worse than getting a sports injury and not properly taking care of it. There is risk associated with not seeking proper treatment after injuring yourself on the field. If left untreated, a simple fracture could lead to improper healing. This can result in limited movement, repeated injuries, joint damage, arthritis, and severe ongoing pain. If you are suffering from a spr...ain, fracture, swelling, bruising, discomfort/pain or redness, it is time to seek treatment. How to limit Foot and Ankle Injuries Stretch before and after exercise Incorporate strength training into your workout Choose shoes specifically for your foot type Be careful when on uneven surfaces Listen to your body If an injury occurs, use the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation), then consult with a Podiatrist or Podiatric Surgeon.
