25.01.2022 Well, that's a wrap. You should be able to answer that question by now. The answer is pretty much anything to do with the feet! > We hope you enjoyed Foot Health Month for 2020 and found our posts interesting and informative. 24.01.2022 Fun fact....New Balance was started in 1906 by a chap named William J Riley. It was originally called New Balance Arch Support Company (quite a mouthful) and as the story goes, William watched his chooks strut around in the backyard and became fascinated by their 3 pronged feet, so he designed a shoe with 3 support points. Patients of ours will recognise this as the 'tripod' we talk so much about. A tripod after all is the most stable of shapes. > Today, NB are known for ...their R&D, being the first sport shoe company to employ podiatrists to assist during the design process. They use robust materials which stack up against even the most active child (making parents happy!) Their shoes are a wide fit which for the vast majority of our population is a necessary feature. And seriously, how pretty are these colours! : : : : #newbalance #runners #podiatristdesigned #sportsshoes #athleticfootwear #NB #chooks #tripod #chickenfoot #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #podantics #loveyourfeet

23.01.2022 Derby Day has always been my favourite. Black and white, how can you go wrong! Even though you can't be at Flemington today, why not put on your best black and white outfit and twirl around the house with glass of champagne. At this point, I'll do anything to keep myself amused! : :... : : #derbyday #vrc #melbournecupcarnival #blackandwhite #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

22.01.2022 I think is safe to say we are all desperate to get back to the activities that we love, be it golf, the gym, competitive sport or yoga. As we head towards the resumption of kids sport training and competition, as well as adults non-contact sport from November 8, we are anticipating we will see a lot more patients with foot and ankle pain. > What we all need to remember is that we are coming off a long period of reduced activity, and if you just try to pick up where you left ...off, you are likely to end up with an injury or at least very sore while your body adjusts the new increased demands and loads of your chosen exercise. So how do we manage our bodies over this transition period? > Up on our website now is a new blog that focuses on just that. Managing our bodies (and your kids bodies) through the transition period between being largely sedentary to full activity. We cover things to consider like: Footwear Load management Strengthening Stretching Check it out now by visiting: https://www.balwynpodiatry.com.au//post-covid-return-to-ac : : : : #returntosport #injuryprevention #strengthening #footexercises #footstrengthening #footpain #anklepain #bigsmart #manageload #trainingload #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

22.01.2022 Happy Halloween..... Do you know what podiatrists find REALLY frightening? People who suffer at home with foot pain because they: 1. don't know where to go for advice 2. are too embarrassed to let anyone see their feet (we've literally seen everything before!)... 3. think it will go away on it's own 4. think pain is normal, often blaming the aging process Foot pain is NOT NORMAL peeps. Get it checked out. The longer you put it off, the harder it becomes to treat. So please, make an appointment today. : : : : #scary #halloween #footpain #gethelp #embarassingbodies #podiatry #podiatrist #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podsfixfeet #loveyourfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

21.01.2022 ~ FUNGAL NAILS ~ WHAT: a dermatophyte infection of the nail bed that causes destruction of the nail.. WHO: anyone can be affected though it seems to be more common in people of the age of 50... SYMPTOMS: discolouration of the nail. Can be white, yellow, orange, even brown. Nails can become thick and crumbly and may start to lift TREATMENT: first you need to be assessed to make sure it’s definitely a fungal infection. The nail will be burred down and advice will be given on the best course of treatment. Options can include: anti- fungal paints, tablets or laser. Accurate diagnosis is required. The fungus can spread if left untreated so it’s advisable to seek advice from a podiatrist ASAP : : : #footpathpodiatry #podiatry #balwynpodiatry #balwyn #foothealthmonth2020 #foothealthmonth #podsfixfeet #loveyourfeet #myfetarekillingme #podantics #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #fungalnails #onychomycosis See more

14.01.2022 A very useful tool in diagnosing boney conditions. They help us to check joint spaces, alignment of joints and bones (if taken weight bearing), boney lesions, different forms of arthritis, fractures and breaks.. They do not tell us anything about the integrity of soft tissue structures like ligaments.. X-rays, while fascinating, should only be done if the results could change the treatment plan. This is especially true with ankle sprains. You don't always need an xray. ...If you would like to know what to look out for before rushing off for an X-ray, check out Eliza's video here https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=484580655626227 : : : : #footpathpodiatry #podiatry#podiatrist #podsfixfeet #xray #footstructure #fracture #balwynpodiatry #foothealthmonth2020 #foothealthmonth #loveyourfeet #myfeetarekillingme #anklesprain #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #podantics

11.01.2022 Hydration. We all understand the importance of it but did you know that that dryness of the skin can be a direct result of lack of water drunk during the day? When you think about the fact that we are approximately 80% water, how could dehydration not affect every part of us right? Well, your skin is the same. > If you are suffering from dry skin, even on your feet there are 2 things you need to do.... 1. Tackle the issue from the inside. A good rule of thumb is to drink 30ml of water for every kilogram you weight each day. It is more important that you constantly sip, rather than guzzling it all at once (cos you'll just end up on the loo!) 2. Nourish your skin from the outside with a good quality foot specific cream. We love Diabalm which is 25% urea. It helps to keep the skin soft, forming a protective barrier over the skin. Our patients love it too! 08.01.2022 I don't think there is a group of health professionals that watch people walk more than us. Yep, we are secretly assessing you as you walk through Woolworths. Of all the things we learn at uni, biomechanical assessment is the most complex and the subject guaranteed to cause the most stress and confusion. > There are 33 joints in each foot, not to mention the ankle, knee and hip joints. These joints move (mostly) in 3 different directions and during gait they are in a constan...t state of movement. And guess what? Every single person is different. Then you lay the muscles, tendons and ligaments over the top and what you are left with is an incredible complex assessment task. You want to know why we spend 4 years at uni? Well that's why (cutting toenails is actually only a tiny part of our training) > Gait or walking assessments help us to understand how the body functions. Assessment while lying down is only part of the picture. You need to see what happens functionally. A perfect example is ankle joint range of motion. So often when a patient is sitting in the chair, they have 'normal' movement at their ankle, but once on their feet, this movement greatly reduces. Something has changed and it is our job to work out why. If we only assessed a patient non-weight bearing, we would never even know there was a potential issue. > A note on fancy equipment in shoe stores. These pressure plates and video recording give some information, yes. But they don't provide all the information. To get a full picture, you need to be assessed by a podiatrist, or another health professional with a large amount of experience or additional training in gait analysis. : : : : #walking #walkingassessment #gaitanalysis #biomechanics #feet #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #myfeetarekillingme #loveyourfeet #welltrained #podantics #foothealthmonth2020 #foothealthmonth #thefootpathpodiatrydifference

04.01.2022 We all know to not ignore unusual spots or lumps, or changes to moles or freckles on our skin but the same goes for funny colored lesions under your toenails. > We often see patients with black, brown, blueish colored marks under their nails and generally they are innocuous, caused by a fungal infection or trauma. But, they still need to be checked out. Particularly if you can't remember dropping something on your toe or stubbing it. If you have a discolored part that is not... growing out, then it needs to be checked asap. Particularly if it is a blue or black. > There is a scary statistic showing an increase in melanoma of the nail bed that is related to the use of UV light for manicures and pedicures ( think shellac ) and I would imagine that just like tanning beds, evenly these will be banned due to health concerns. > With summer approaching remember that while you need Vitamin D, between the hours of 11 and 3 it is strongly advised you use a high spectrum sunscreen to prevent burning. It doesn't hurt to wear a hat, cover your skin and stay in the shade on those days when the UV index is high. : : : : #melanoma #nailbed #skincancer #bobmarley #protectyourself #summer #sunscreen #UVindex #sun #footpathpodiatry #balwynpodiatry #podiatry #podiatrist #balwyn #podsfixfeet #myfeetarekillingme #thefootpathpodiatrydifference #podantics #loveyourfeet
