25.01.2022 Shin Splints! They are very painful and frequently occur in athletes, especially when participating in sports which involve change-of direction and are running-based; football, netball, basketball and soccer for example. Although, anyone who is physically active is susceptible to shin splints. Shin splints present as pain and stiffness in the shin during and after exercise and are due to muscle strain or overuse. They are commonly caused by training/running on hard surfaces..., unsupportive footwear, abnormal foot biomechanics, a sudden change in intensity of an activity and/or muscle tightness. Determining the underlying cause of your shin splints is important. If left untreated, the inflammation of the muscle causing shin pain can cause the bone to become irritated and lead to stress fracture. How can Foot Savvy help? The first aim of treatment is to relieve inflammation and strain on the muscle using Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE). The Podiatrist will conduct a physical and gait assessment to determine whether abnormal foot biomechanics is playing a role in your shin splints. They will determine if orthotics are required to support your feet, footwear advice will be given and stretches are often prescribed for treatment.

05.01.2022 DO YOU SUFFER FROM INGROWN TOENAILS? Ingrown toenail is a common condition where a piece of nail presses into the skin, or into the nail bed. This allows for the entry of bacteria into the area which can cause an infection in the toe. This is commonly caused by poor hygiene, excessive sweating or trauma to the toenail from sports. Sports that require kicking can damage, aggravate and shift the growth of the toenail. Poor nail care and nail cutting technique can cause the cor...ner of the nails to dig into the skin. Abnormal nail shapes or pressure from poor-fitting shoes can cause the nail to improperly grow. It is important to seek professional assistance if you think you have an ingrown toenail as improper treatment can damage the toenail and cause infections, worsening pain. When you attend Foot Savvy Podiatry for ingrown toenail treatment, we will first assess the nail/s to identify the best possible treatment option. If the ingrown toenail is minor, a simple nail trimming with special equipment may be adequate. In some scenarios, a minor ingrown toenail surgery is required. This is the most effective treatment option and is highly likely to provide a permanent solution to ingrown toenails. The minor surgery is called Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) and involves local anaesthetic being administrated by your Podiatrist. The section of the nail plate is removed, and a chemical called phenol is used to prevent the affected nail section regrowing in the future. In more severe cases, we may recommend a Total Nail Avulsion (TNA) which removes the entire toenail to achieve the best result. In most cases, with appropriate footwear you are able to carry on with day-to-day tasks immediately and return to work within a couple of days. Recovery time is around 3-6 weeks with a few dressing changes in between. Call us on 5858 4640 to book your consultation today!
