25.01.2022 Did you know one of the world’s biggest barramundi hatcheries is in Melbourne’s western suburbs? New Fishing and Boating Minister Melissa Horne MP took the chan...ce to visit Mainstream Aquaculture yesterday to learn about how they grow the fabled fish, including their famous golden barramundi. Part of the solution is pumping water from several hundred metres underground, to ensure it’s warm enough 29.2 degrees, to be precise - for the fish to grow. Mainstream co-founder and chief scientist Paul Harrison toured her through the facility, which opened in 2001 and grows about 1000 tonnes of barra each year. Mainstream directly employs 28 people and normally exports the fingerlings from Werribee to 22 countries, but that trade has been restricted for much of this year. So next time you’re in the mood for a feed of fish, buy some locally-grown barra. #barramundi

25.01.2022 FISHING RECOGNISED AS OUTDOOR EXERCISE IN METRO MELBOURNE We are pleased Premier Andrews has taken our advice that fishing is a safe, family friendly activity ...for Melbournians under Step 2 of the Covid recovery roadmap. From 5am tomorrow you can go fishing within 5km of home each day for up to 2 hours "only where facilities are not required", i.e. such as bank, beach and kayak fishing. Using a powered boat will still not be permitted and we are seeking further clarification about what constitutes a 'facility'. We accept that this restricted form of fishing won't suit everyone. Equally we know of many fishers who are desperate to have any opportunity to throw a line in at their local waterway. VRFish continues to advocate for the safe return of fishing and boating as soon as possible and for Government to guarantee a snapper season. There are many fishable areas close to home than people think. For instance, there are many urban stocked waterways with trout and native fish thanks to the tireless work by the Victorian Fisheries Authority and recreational fishing organisations. You can find Metro stocked waters here - https://vfa.vic.gov.au/db/list-last-stocked-information.

24.01.2022 Malmsbury Reservoir will reopen to on-water recreation on Friday 6 November 2020. Malmsbury, Barkers Creek and Upper Coliban are temporarily closed to on-water... recreation as there is a risk to on-water users when they reach capacity and spill. Water levels for Barkers Creek and Upper Coliban will be reviewed on Monday 9 November 2020. Lauriston Reservoir remains open for on-water recreation, and all four reservoirs are open to visitors and for shoreline fishing. Information on on-water recreation can be found on our ‘Visit our reservoirs’ page - bit.ly/2GKYAJ9

23.01.2022 Things are heating up down at The Warmies! One of Melbourne’s best loved fishing spots now has a new fish cleaning table to ensure your catch is ready to cook... when you arrive home. Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne MP popped down recently with Newport and District Angling Club Colin Wilkinson to see just how good the new table is! The $32,000 upgrade is thanks to a Target One Million commitment to deliver 5 new and upgraded fish cleaning facilities across Victoria by July next year. The Warmies work has delivered a new under cover shelter and lighting to make it easy to use day or night. Tailor, salmon, flathead and even the majestic mulloway can be targeted from the Warmies long rock walls. The nearby Sandy Point Nature Reserve and plenty of car parking means it’s a great spot to safely wet a line with the family. The table will also be ideal for those using the boat ramp to target Port Phillip’s snapper fishery. Construction on the upgrade project was overseen by the Hobsons Bay City Council. #target1million #fishingmelbourne #fishingvictoria

17.01.2022 Did you know you can find your nearest access points to rivers, stream and lakes using MapShare Vic? This mapping tool can help identify licens...ed and unreserved Crown land that we recfishers can legally access. Like us, you can also use the tool to locate areas that have been illegally blocked or locked off that we can bring forward to Government to investigate and resolve. The Victorian Government has committed to guarantee access to fishing and camping on crown land that have grazing licences and river frontage. Now is the time to bring forward any access blackspot areas. https://mapshare.vic.gov.au/mapsharevic/

14.01.2022 Although you can’t see it, there’s a golden smile behind that mask Lake Hume golden perch that is! Fisheries Officers from the Wodonga station report that yel...las between 45-50cm have been on the chew lately. When they come to the surface, they’re sometimes followed by 2-3 similar sized fish. We know why, too. Lake Hume has been stocked with nearly 2.5 million golden perch fingerlings over the past 20 years! That’s a lot of yellas. You can thank your fishing licence fees for these stocking efforts. 10.01.2022 Metropolitan Melbourne has entered the Second Step of its roadmap for easing coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions. Individuals are able to go fishing and boating... (powered and unpowered) within 5km of your home and a two-hour time limit applies, split into a maximum of two sessions. Boat ramps and jetties are open. If you’re at a ramp or jetty, you must continue to adhere to physical distancing of at least 1.5m. For marine businesses, changes to restrictions mean that boating maintenance is now permitted with marine and specialist mechanics able to operate as required for safe operation of boats for scheduled and logbook services and inspections. This means that people are now able to take their boats and trailers to businesses that provide boating safety inspections, servicing and maintenance services. This will ensure people are able to have their boating safety inspections completed ahead of the upcoming summer season. Learn more about these restrictions: https://vfa.vic.gov.au/recreational-fishing/COVID19

08.01.2022 Garfish Victoria’s bread and butter species! It’s school holidays and what better time to enjoy the winter sun and catch some garfish with the family. ...Whether you fish from a boat or a jetty, southern garfish are one of Victoria’s staple fish species. This year we are seeing a lot of gars and although small, they are great fun to catch and their delicate flesh tastes fantastic. Southern garfish (Hyporhamphus melanochir) are a common occurrence in Victoria’s bays and inlets, particularly where there is a bit of seagrass. They are a fast-growing species reaching around 16-18 cm in one year but can live up to 10 years of age! To catch them simply berley them up with some old bread soaked in tuna oil, and use a small longshank hook (about a size 12) suspended about a metre under a pencil float using a small sinker and piece of bait (squid, pipi, pilchard fillet or even maggots). Simply, scale, remove the head, clean the stomach cavity and roll them flat. Dust with flour and pan fry. Yummo! 01.01.2022 The Goulburn River has been stocked with 10,000 brown trout yearlings this week, in addition to 150 more stonker rainbows. The Alexandra Bridge got 75 of these ...giants and Walnuts Reserve the other 75. The Eildon Pondage got in on the action too with 120 ex-brood brown trout, averaging 3.5kg each, from our Snobs Creek hatchery down the road. Across the western side of Melbourne, near Ballan, Pykes Creek Reservoir was stocked with 2,000 brown trout yearlings this week. The trout stocking season will draw to an end soon as the weather warms and we’ll turn our attention to releasing bass, cod and yellas amongst other things. Remember it’s important to stay safe when you wet a line. You can fish with up to 10 people, but you should be able to keep a safe distance from one another, wear a fitted face mask and minimise the sharing of equipment. If you’re in metropolitan Melbourne, you must also stay within 25km of home if you’re planning to try your luck this weekend. Don’t forget there are still plenty of stonker rainbows in Melbourne’s family fishing lakes - https://vfa.vic.gov.au//stocking-stonkers-in-metropolitan- #fishinglicencefeesatwork #target1million #fishstocking
