25.01.2022 IN MEMORIAM: ALBY SPEED 1930 2020 As a 15 year old Yarraville Iron Foundry apprentice in 1947, Alby Speed was ‘ready to go’ when two colleagues challenged him to come and watch a game of hockey in his local area. Alby not only went to watch, he played that day and was hooked ever more. Little did Alby know that that day’s involvement was the beginning of a 75 year connection to his beloved Footscray Hockey Club. And with it, the following: 37 years on the FHC Board of Direc...tors, Men’s Senior Coach for 13 years, two first XI premierships, Men's Club Champion twice and he was the Men's section record games holder for nearly two decades finishing on 946 games. Alby was awarded Life Membership of FHC in 1962, and received Hockey Victoria’s Award of Merit in 1990. The Women’s Club Champion (first XI Best and Fairest perpetual award trophy) is named after Alby and more recently the F1 ground was also named in his honour. 25.01.2022 F2 TURF GOES TO LOCAL COMMUNITY TO ASSIST WITH COVID OPENING The old Footscray Hockey F2 turf has not seen its last days of use, going to local commuity restaurants to assist them in setting up for outdoor seating and hospitality in COVID restrictions. Littlefoot Bar + Kitchen is one of the lucky recipients and hockey sticks graced the floor of the new outdoor area by the owner Stuart, Maribyrnong Mayor Michael Clarke and FHC President Rodney Johnstone. ... They've even scored a piece with the boundary line, but the whole area is in play at Little Foot! Learn from homegrown National player Carly James and her team of experienced coaches as they deliver a program focused on technical skills, game sense and match play.... 22.01.2022 TIM STRAPP APPOINTED MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE COACH AND JUNIOR DIRECTOR OF COACHING Footscray Hockey Club is ecstatic to announce the appointment of Tim Strapp as the Men’s Premier League Coach and Junior Director of Coaching for the next 4 years at the kennel. He is synonymous with high performance hockey as the current Women’s VIS coach and Hockey Club Melbourne coach. Tim has extensive experience coaching Premier League Men’s & Women’s, numerous Victorian teams and high perfor...mance hockey academies. Tim’s strong vision to develop positive club and team culture and his keen eye on hockey players executing the basics well will ensure FHC build on and progress with their current successes. His professional career in fitness and training at the elite level adds expertise to the conditioning components of our game. Tim and the current Women’s Premier League coach Alex Shirley are already well connected, and they will culminate in strong leadership for each section of the club. 21.01.2022 VALE ALBY SPEED It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we hear of the passing of our cherished, loved and outstanding life member, Alby Speed. We send our deepest condolences and our loving thoughts to his wife, and life member, Bobbie Speed and their family. A full memorial post is being carefully prepared, to capture some of the most brilliant photographs and stories of his hockey life.... As his family so eloquently have stated 'may there be many beautiful fields of hockey in the sky'. Condolences to the Speed and hockey family.

19.01.2022 CITY OF MARIBYRNONG COMMUNITY GRANT FHC have been successful in the latest round of Maribrynong Council's community grants with an application to run an event during NAIDOC Week 2021. Next year we will be celebrating the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders contribution to Australian culture with lots of fun activities for children and adults. 14.01.2022 VALE BRENDAN SHEEHAN The entire Footscray Hockey Club community and beyond is saddened beyond belief at the passing of club stalwart Brendan Sheehan. Brendan’s tireless work and efforts in building the junior section of the club to #1 in the late 2000s, progressing the club forward to achieve Premier League status and his intricate knowledge of facilities and turf field construction have been integral towards the club’s success over the last 2 decades. He had a passion for c...lub history, memorabilia and club statistics and relished in the successes of players, teams, coaches and volunteerism. He continued to work on the F2 redevelopment project, the Brendan Sheehan Field, until the very last days and has left a work ethic and legacy that will be difficult to replace or replicate. Hockey Victoria recognised his life contribution to the sport with a Life Membership in 2017 and he spent most of his career working for Sport and Recreation Victoria on hundreds of sporting club projects across Victoria. To his wife, life member Julie Anne Sheehan, daughter Ally Sheehan and brother Peter Sheehan, all avid FHC hockey members, and to the entire Sheehan family, we send our sincere condolences and thoughts during this time. Brendan was awarded FHC life membership in 1990 and below are a summary of his achievements. 13.01.2022 WESTERN U15 GIRLS REPRESENT FHC AT ICC Under the colours of Footscray Hockey Club, players from Werribee, Essendon, FHC and Altona where led by coaches from Brunswick. A truly collaborative team from the Western Suburbs. After a streak of 3 goal losses whether it be against the top or bottom teams, the girls finished 7th after a 1 goal victory over PEGS.... It was social distancing and hand sanitiser all around. Great the program can head into contact training.... 01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 18th SEPTEMBER 2011 We are taking a trip back down memory lane! Nine years ago today, both our Mens and Womens State League 2 teams played in the 2011 Grand Finals. With the Men defeating Kew in a thrilling match with the final score 16-15 after penalty strokes and gaining promotion into the State League 1 (now known as the Premier League).
