21.01.2022 'Mr Liddle urges the council to take this opportunity to engage a historian to work with them on the process, to help bring the stories to the community. Because the process isn’t about erasure, it’s about knowing and acknowledging our history and about bringing some contemporary critical thinking to bear upon it.' 14.01.2022 Late meeting last night, it went till after midnight. But I am happy that at the end of the open section I managed to move a motion to start a consultation process to potentially change the name of Willshire St. Willshire was the first police officer charged with murder and had a reputation for treating Aboriginal people extremely badly. Let's start a process of truthtelling in our memorialisation of people from the past. It was different back then but we now know what we know and have to change. Wilshire isn't the only bad guy recognised with a street name.

08.01.2022 As a solar city and working to increase the amount of renewable energy going into our grid, we need to ensure we manage the waste at the end of it. Happy that I got unanimous support for my motion to do so. https://alicespringsnews.com.au//renewable-energy-town-co/

06.01.2022 Willshire Street Public Consultation Closing date: 13 Aug 2020 At the Monday 29 June Ordinary Meeting, Alice Springs Town Council resolved to conduct a public consultation to ascertain the community’s sentiment in regard to the proposed renaming of Willshire Street, The Gap.... Although not required under the Local Government Act, Council has chosen in this instance to conduct consultation in order to provide an informed report of community views to the Place Names committee. The public consultation is scheduled to run from 9am, Friday 24 July until 5pm, Thursday 13 August 2020, and results will form a recommendation to be put before the Place Names Committee for the final decision. A public meeting will also be conducted during the consultation period (date to be announced). As the local government authority for this municipality, Alice Springs Town Council acknowledges that its recommendations, decisions and actions can variously impact local residents, groups and organisations. With this in mind, Council is encouraging key stakeholders and residents of Willshire Street to submit responses to this consultation. If you would like to make further comment, please send an email to [email protected] before 5pm, Friday 7 August 2020. https://alicesprings.nt.gov.au//notification-of-councils-w

05.01.2022 This will be discussed in Council tonight. What do you think about it?

05.01.2022 UPDATE: The motion was supported UNANIMOUSLY! On Monday night as part of the Ordinary Council meeting I will be moving the motion 'That Council express support for the changing of the name of Willshire St and undertake community consultation to determine a recommendation of potential names to formally submit to the Place Names Committee.' This will be the beginning of a bureaucratic process to get this street name changed, it won't happen quickly. Once we pass the motion, C...ouncil will have to undertake community consultation and a report will be made to Council, we will then have to vote again to formally submit to the Place Names Committee who will meet and make a recommendation for a future Council meeting to consider and hopefully pass, then we can change the name. It's arduous but that's the process. It's taken decades of many people over the years speaking up and calling for the name to be changed to get to this point. Hopefully we can gain unanimous support to move forward from this as our community demands that we do. 05.01.2022 Looking forward to the opportunity for Alice Springs to look at something similar for our Food and Organics Composting bins (pending trial outcomes) and one day household recycling. May avoid the laggards through good community engagement and education prior to roll out.
