23.01.2022 #Repost @huttstcentre Everyone should know that Hutt St Centre isnt just for old men; its for young women with children like me and people from all walks of life. They helped me so much. When 27 year old Alba* split up with her longterm partner, the father of her toddler, she had no idea how much it would impact her life.... They had a lovely home together but when he moved out, she couldn't afford rent and bills on her part-time salary. She eventually fell into arrears, and she and her little girl had to leave their home. They moved into her mum and stepdads one-bedroom unit, but there was simply not enough space for the four of them. Alba knew they had to leave, but found that she didnt have as many friends to rely on as she'd thought she did. On the brink of homelessness, the young desperate single mother started researching support services and found Hutt St Centre. She came in and was quickly linked up with a case manager, Emma*, who helped Alba and her daughter move into emergency accommodation in a womens shelter, then began working to find them stable housing. Two months later, they moved into a unit in the outer suburbs through a community housing provider. Alba was overjoyed a place to call home was all shed ever wanted. Emma arranged training to further Albas work prospects, including shifts with @Forage Supply, and set up financial counselling to help her finances stay on track. Every choice Ive made has been with my daughters present and long-term wellbeing in mind, said Alba. "Shes been through a lot of change and instability, and I want to be sure I can be the best parent I can be and shower her with as much love as I can. Albas now working in hospitality and has ongoing support from her case manager. This helps take some pressure off the single mother, so she doesnt feel like she's doing everything alone. Alba asked for help at a critical time, instead of spiralling downward, said Emma. This meant her period of homelessness did not completely change the course of her life. Hutt St Centre was able to help when she needed it most, and she could get her life back on track. Its great to see! *Names have been changed
