15.01.2022 If the crowd were doing the judging, Lacey Besant and 'Viper' would have marked a time in the Central Hotel Eugowra Junior Breakaway Roping at the Forbes Servic...es Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo on Saturday. She threw a perfect loop, she got her rope all ready but then that slippery little sucker stepped on through, just before her rope could release. Sadly, it left our Judge, Greg Frewin with no alternative but to wave away the run but Lacey just smiled, perhaps knowing that she had caught a lot of hearts with her skill and her style. Next time Cowgirl :) Photos and words Stephen Mowbray Photography See more

12.01.2022 He split 4th place in the Craig Mill Ag Contracting Rope and Tie competition at the Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo on Saturday with a 4.64 sec run ...but there's quite a backstory to Jackson Clark and the rope horse under his saddle that goes by the name of 'Gunsmoke Classy 49er' aka '9er' Jackson and '9er' came together through the friendship of Lana Carney-Wicks and the late Amy Pittman. Amy was the sister of Jackson's Mum, Rebecca Lees. Amy passed away some 6 years ago and Lana and Terry helped young Jackson with a calf horse. And what a Team Jackson and '9er' turned out to be ! 5 years ago Jackson rode '9er' into the number one spot to compete at the National High School Rodeo Finals in the USA. He went and successfully competed at Des Moines, Iowa in the World Junior High Scool Finals and then moved to the USA to stay with his Dad on a Ranch in Arizona. And he did a bit of Rodeo along the way and is the 2019 Arizona State Roping Champion and winner of many a buckle and trophy saddle from hs time there. Jackson recently returned to Australia and is now back home with his Mum Rebecca who has won many Breakaway Roping and Steer Undecorating titles and her hubby Ben Lees whose Rodeo resume includes 2018 Australian All Round Cowboy, 2018 Australian Saddle Bronc Champion, the 2017 All Round Blake Hallam Memorial Buckle winner and the list goes on and on ! When Jackson got back, of course, he wanted to Rodeo again so he picked up the phone, much to the surprise of Lana and Terry, and asked if '9er' might be available. Now 25 years old, but still regularly ridden and at his happiest when under saddle, '9er' might have thought he was retired and Lana suggested that this talented All Round Cowboy might want to search a little wider for a younger, sharper Rope Horse. "If it's OK with you, I'd like to have a go with him" said Jackson, and so 9'er headed off to the Lee's place and went back into work. Just by the way, after Jackson went to the USA, '9er' continued his roping career at three more Australian High School Finals events carrying Brayden Wellby to a Rope and Tie victory, helping Maisy Hetherington win a Breakaway Roping title and a Barrel Racing crown and he and Elle Flanagan won the Dummy Goat Tying competition. For the last 2 years he's not been competing, just regularly ridden to keep him in good shape. Jackson and '9er' have had 3 Rodeos together this season, Forbes the most successful so far. But there's no doubt that '9er' and his 18yo Cowboy partner have got the skills and the talent to challenge the best. Watch this big old horse hit the brakes, he knows his job. And this young Cowboy, under the wings of the legend that is Ben Lees, well, we just think he on his way to a really big future. We wish you well Cowboy. Congratulations to you and '9er' on a great weekend. Photos and words (helped by Lana) Stephen Mowbray Photography

10.01.2022 Three things you can give + still keep are your word, a smile and a grateful heart. There’s no doubt this gorgeous (and smiling) Cowgirl does all 3 - Ashlei...gh Bush Stephen Mowbray Photography captured Yass Cowgirl, Ash Bush with a grin from ear to ear after catching her calf in the Breakaway Roping at Forbes Rodeo. Having a successful weekend in the Rodeo arena, Ash placed second in the Breakaway while Husband Clay took out the win in the Rope & Tie and placed 3rd in the Team Roping.

09.01.2022 It was another solid win to Bailey Searle in the Central West Diesel Junior Steer Ride at the Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo last weekend. 07.01.2022 Four Cowboys split first place on 74pts after their first round ride in the Australian Forensic Services Saddle Bronc at the Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbe...s Rodeo and they were join by Jason Collins who marked a 71pts on board 'Tequila Sheila' to all have the opportunity to win a grand in the hand if they could cover and top score on one of the outstanding Gill Bros Rodeo broncs, winner take all, in the Shoot Out. Ben Rasmussen and 'Whiskey Boy' kicked off with a 75pt ride just to let the other Cowboys know they were going to have to work it to earn it. Josh Barnett got the memo and on board 'Cadillac Cowboy' lifted the leaderboard one notch higher with a great 76pt ride. Next out, Jayden Blacker on board ''Moves Like Jagger' but the Judges must have felt Mick didn't move as well as usual and marked this pair a 73. Jason Collins and 'CQ' also couldn't get to the top of the leaderboard so it looked like the money might go to Josh. But Ben Lees had a different idea and plenty of horse underneath him to get the job done if he could make the eight. And so it was, after 8 seconds on board 'Cajun Man' the Judges gave the Denman Cowboy a well deserved 77pts and the $1000 winner takes all first prize. Congratulations Cowboy.

06.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we have lost one of our valued members of Forbes Rodeo Committee. To win Paddy Malloy All Round buckle at the Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo you ha...ve to compete at both ends of the Arena and yesterday there were some outstanding Cowboys all keen to get their hands on this very prestigious Buckle and they were watched on by the great man himself. But at the end of the day, it was the Woolbrook Cowboy Gerard 'Westy' Oversby who once again claimed the honour, successfully defending his title from last year with a 7.81 second run in the MCC Forbes Steer Wrestling competition and an 83 point ride on Gill Bros 'Stefan' to split the win with Dee Heineman in the Forbes Livestock and Agency Co. Bareback competition. And it was Westy's birthday as well so Happy Birthday Cowboy, perfect way to spend the day and what a great present you earned yourself ! 05.01.2022 Very excited to be in the wonderful town of Forbes, New South Wales for the Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo. Shaun Read Troy Read Damian Price and th...e outstanding Committee are ready to deliver, for the 7th time, their awesome Rodeo at the Forbes Showground. The Arena looks incredible, the V.I.P. is one of the best I've ever seen (hope they let me in) and the draw list is chocka block with the finest Rodeo Athletes in the ABCRA. And, for our roughstock Cowboys, there's a pen full of the Gill Brothers broncs so you know there'll be some strong rides and a string of their Bulls that'll give up some great scores if you can get them to the buzzer. For the All Round Cowboy, there is the incredibly prestigious 'Paddy Molloy' All Round Champion Buckle, there is perhaps no greater Rodeo honour than that bestowed by this amazing Cowboy but we'll tell you more about that tomorrow. Gates open at 8.00am, action starts 9.00am Tickets at the Gate. See more

03.01.2022 ON THE RODEO ROAD WITH ... THE LEYS FAMILY When it comes to a family the embodies the true meaning of Rodeo, the Leys family quickly come to mind. They are lon...g time Members of the ABCRA and are truly 'Rodeo Royalty' with not only the skills, talent and determination that has seen them earn multiple Australian titles, but they are humble, thoughtful, kind and keen to teach, not only their own children, but many others, about what it takes to be successful both in and out of the arena. You'll find Greg (aka 'Slip’), Phillipa, and their children Riley and Luke just outside of Tamworth at their 'Crooked Creek Ranch' in the rolling hills of Woolomin. 'Slip' was the 2003 Australian Bareback Champion and 3 times has been the National Finals Aggregate Bareback Champion. He also successfully competed in the US and Canada now teams up with his 14 year old son Luke in the Team Roping competition. When not in the arena competing or practicing, Slip is also renowned as one of the best Farriers in the Hunter and Tamworth Districts. Just two weeks ago, at the tender age of 13, Luke and Slip took out their first Team Roping win together at the Barraba Show Rodeo. Phillipa is 2 times ABCRA Breakaway Roping Champion and 2 times National Finals Aggregate Champion and still holds the ABCRA National Finals Breakaway Roping record after stopping the clock in 1.87 seconds in Rd 2 2016 on board 'Hickory Bay'. Right now, Phillipa is on the mend from ankle surgery in early 2020 but assures us she will be back (better than ever no doubt)!! In the meantime, Riley is following in her Mum’s footsteps winning the AUSCO HOGs 14-18 Yrs Barrel Race at Forbes Services Memorial Club Forbes Rodeo aboard her pocket rocket Roany and picking up a place in the Junior Breakaway Roping on board 'Rich Hickory' Giving back to the sport she loves, Phillipa is kept busy mentoring and giving lessons to many up and coming Breakaway Ropers at Crooked Creek Ranch and when 'Slip' is finished up for the day, plenty of time is spent honing the skills with Riley and Luke and there's no doubt they will be ones to watch in the future as they learn from the years of experience and success achieved by their Champions, Mum and Dad. We wish Phillipa all the very best with her recovery and look forward to watching this great family travel down the road, competing together and sometimes against each other in the wonderful, family sport of Rodeo.
