25.01.2022 Great work Yarra Ranges Council!!!! https://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au//Council-accelerates-it

25.01.2022 Big Wolfie carrying her babies. She was an amazing spider! Built an interesting entrance to her burrow, constructed of well placed and organised twigs and sticks spanning out on a angle below the mouth of the burrow. Difficult to show the detail in a pic. Definitely a master builder! From the big to the small. Tiny Greenhoods - Pterostylis parviflora dotted the landscape. Northern Western Port Nature Conservation Reserve

25.01.2022 Up up and away today in our spiritual home, the Mountain Ash forests of the Dandenongs.

24.01.2022 Back on home turf with the home ground advantage. The ever inspiring and beautiful Cool Temperate Rainforest and Mountain Ash Forests of the Dandenong Ranges. Sassafras Creek, Sassafras Creek Reserve.

24.01.2022 Let’s call it Sambar Deer social distancing. Back in to the stunning Sherbrooke Forest assisting the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group. It’s a shame to have to intervene in this way, but it would be even more of a shame to loose iconic and precious forest species on our watch. Wire mesh tree guards to protect Southern Sassafras from ring barking by Sambar Deer. Exclusion fencing around one of the only known patches of Silky Fan fern left in Sherbrooke to mitigate browsing and trampling. A privilege to work on this project.

23.01.2022 When the line between work and play becomes blurred Beautiful morning on the water today.

22.01.2022 Handweed away amongst the Grass-trees..... is thats a strange stick I see?

22.01.2022 Staring back to home on the horizon...... from our island home

21.01.2022 Now you see it, now you dont. Now you see it, now you dont .

21.01.2022 Last but not least for today, wed like to introduce you to the newest member of our team. Our little inflatable zodiac is changing the way we work and access areas in and around the inlets and surrounds of northern Western Port. Fantastic boat with decent load capacity and stability for its size. Aaaaahhh, we know, its a tough gig, but someones got to do it

20.01.2022 Pay rise please boss or youll walk the plank! Great day with Peninsula Boat Training today out on Port Phillip Bay working on our boat handling skills. We were practicing driving forward with our back turned! No really, thats Asha working on some reversing manoeuvres

18.01.2022 Stick the iPhone up to the binos and ended up with these pics of our favorite resident Powerful Owls, residing on a site in Tecoma we have been working on restoring carefully around the Owls for many years now. Pics dont do the size of the birds justice! A great day in the field today. Nice tip using the binos this way Dave!

18.01.2022 It has been a colourful week in the forest - Spring has certainly sprung! Some pretty little Orchids and Lilies around the hills, so keep an eye out :)

17.01.2022 Yet another example of locals and community doing what locals and community do. Amazing things. It is very difficult to comprehend the enormity of these events. Please donate if you can.

16.01.2022 Some great wildflower displays to top off a solid day treating high threat weeds in Northern Westernport NCR. None more showy than Rounded Noon-flower, Disphyma crassifolium ssp. clavellatum. The color and texture in the Coastal Saltmarsh can be amazing. Foliage of this plant is edible too.

15.01.2022 As we navigate through the unknown, we are still out there. We certainly feel lucky to work in the outdoors, where it is easier to implement many of the necessary requirements to hopefully help stem the tide of the COVID-19 spread. We can still work, at least for now. We also have in our thoughts ALL of the nature and communities impacted by this past seasons devastating bushfires and wonder how the communities are coping with this extreme situation. For those of us who have been getting them, enjoy the beautiful rains. The Dandenong Ranges are green and lush. Never looked so good. Get to know the birds in your backyard. Get out with a cuppa and stare at the stars. Stay safe. Stay connected.

14.01.2022 As they head off into the golden mist......the quest for the ring begins......... Great pic Jeff. An amazing scene on the edges of Western Port Nature Conservation Reserve this morning

13.01.2022 Who pulled the plug out?!

13.01.2022 After an ecological assessment by Graeme Lorimer, obtaining grant funding, taking the mowers off and creating exclusion zones, all undertaken by Maroondah City Council, we will be the first bush crew to begin ecological works on a new site in Croydon. It’s going to be very exciting to watch this reserve unfold over the coming months and years. There are many gems, some definitely yet to be discovered! 3 absolutely stunning remnant specimen trees of Candlebark, Yellow box and Silver-leaved Stringybark. Much thanks to Craig, Daniel and Bec - Maroondah City Council, for giving us the opportunity to be involved.

13.01.2022 This is a really good rant worth reading and considering.

12.01.2022 Weve always really enjoyed working with passionate private property owners who are aiming to improve the environmental values on their land. This can come in many forms, including ecologically minded weed control, revegetation or professional advice on bushland management and ecological restoration on any given property. Sometimes the where to begin can feel overwhelming but its important to remain positive and understand in many situations, its the tortoise, not the ha...re that wins the race. Many of our smaller scale projects have been made possible through either Melbourne Waters Streamside Frontage Management Program and/or increasingly through privately funded works. If undertaking a project of this nature has been something you or someone you may know has been considering, then we may be able to help! Feel free to get in touch and we can chat about how we may be able to assist.

12.01.2022 Working in the tall forests and gullies of the Dandenongs just wouldnt be the same without these lil helpers. The beautiful, ever curious, very appreciative East Yellow Robin

11.01.2022 A good news story. Weve been able to use separate boats and kayaks to maintain physical distancing and site access in order to keep our project going in Northern Western Port Nature Conservation Reserve. We are always treated to interesting sightings and discoveries in this amazing part of the world. Two colonies of the listed vulnerable Southern Toadlet noted. We got a great look at one of these tiny frogs, that grow to no more than around 30mm and can live for a good 10 y...ears, potentially more in ideal habitat and conditions! Great pic Ash! Whilst weve seen many digs in an area where we have been working on Coast Tea tree removal, we finally picked up a few scratchy Southern Brown Bandicoot pics on one of our remote monitoring cameras. We were worried that the Coast Tea tree removal might negatively impact these listed endangered Bandicoots, but apparently not. Given the way we purposefully stacked the material, it seems from the activity noted, weve actually improved habitat potential which is great! Structure not only form very important to these guys. That right RBGC crew!?

10.01.2022 A chilly start this morning, but oh what a beautiful day it turned into! Todays Eucalytpus of the day goes to Eucalyptus polyanthemos - commonly known as Red Box. It is native to NSW, ACT and VIC occurring mostly on drier shallow soils in open forest usually with other box species and Red Stringybark (Eucalyptus macrorhyncha). It is generally recognisable from a distance by the rather dense crown of greyish leaves. Juvenile leaves are round and grey-green while adult leaves are ovate and between 5 and 10cm in length. Flower buds appear in groups of 3 to 7 and have small conical caps with white flowers appearing in early spring to mid summer.

10.01.2022 Rainy days, marine ply that didnt work out as intended on another project, a big box of screws, a few tools and a book. Our maiden voyage into the world of nest box construction. It certainly wont be our last! Was so much fun. Master builder Gabriel Hattingh finally got to fulfill his dream to build and complete a tiny house. . Asha Billing and sister Brenna worked the paint shop. They came up a treat. Hope the Sugar Gliders and Microbats are happy!?

09.01.2022 Daves eyes were tuned right in to the reptiles today! An awesome foot long Jacky Dragon, very cute juvenile Blotched Blue tongue that needed some TLC in the tick removal department and yet again, spectacular displays of Noon-flower in the Coastal Saltmarsh. Somewhere in between all the cool and amazing things we see, we manage to get some work done....... we promise....... The wonders of Northern Westernport Nature Conservation Reserve. We are very privileged to work in this special place.

09.01.2022 WARNING: SARCASM and ANGER This is where we work. Its our workplace. This is Perrins Creek that runs between Kallista and Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges. So many other places literally everywhere suffer the same fate. Imagine someone came in and trashed your office, dumped their personal rubbish or building waste in the middle of your warehouse or depot. You continue to try to work around it until its cleaned up. Because of where it is dumped, its very difficult to fully ...clean it up. Imagine if it happened again and again and again in your workplace. Not withstanding the negative environmental impacts, the unsightly nature of it and the cost of clean up to tax/rate payers, it becomes an Occupational Health and Safety Issue. Imagine your workplace was consistently made unsafe by someones selfish behaviour You can blame expensive tip fees, but that doesnt cut it. Weve caught people red handed, dumping building waste theyve no doubt charged the client for removal. Green waste dumping is rife, a genuine source of new weed invasions into the bush. Over time, weve come to the realisation that there is a healthy supply of scumbags. Domestic household waste..... so par for the course. Dumped Asbestos....... old news. Used condoms, syringes, bongs....... come on now thats been done to death. Working the top of Mt Corhanwarrabul (peak next to Mt Dandenong) a couple of weeks ago, the crew were greeted by the usual fresh McDonalds rubbish. Broken bottles and take away coffee cups litter the beautiful look out. Wait a second, whats this...... aaahhhhh of course, a human faeces in a McDonalds thick shake cup. Now thats creative. Scumbags. Yes scumbags. Pics sourced from fellow good folk who share the same anger and frustration.

08.01.2022 Uber - Forest to Foreshore style

08.01.2022 We have been getting back into works in the Northern Westernport Nature Conservation Reserve and were treated with a dreamily still morning kayaking out !! Very lucky to work within such incredible heathlands and woodlands there is some truly remarkable vegetation out there. A few of these were taken in-between ringbarking the invasive Sallow Wattle (Acacia longifolia).

08.01.2022 Evidence that we are taking physical distancing and isolation seriously. No Brenna, you cant come out!

08.01.2022 Rainy days, marine ply that didn’t work out as intended on another project, a big box of screws, a few tools and a book. Our maiden voyage into the world of nest box construction. It certainly won’t be our last! Was so much fun. Master builder Gabriel Hattingh finally got to fulfill his dream to build and complete a tiny house. . Asha Billing and sister Brenna worked the paint shop. They came up a treat. Hope the Sugar Gliders and Microbats are happy!?

06.01.2022 Lets call it Sambar Deer social distancing. Back in to the stunning Sherbrooke Forest assisting the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group. Its a shame to have to intervene in this way, but it would be even more of a shame to loose iconic and precious forest species on our watch. Wire mesh tree guards to protect Southern Sassafras from ring barking by Sambar Deer. 05.01.2022 Huge thanks to Sandie Czarka, Parks Victoria for giving the entire team the opportunity to attend one of the most fantastic field trips with Cam Beardsell and Phil Rance out in the beautiful Warrandyte, Smiths Gully, St Andrews regions. It is unclear how a person can accumulate in one lifetime the knowledge that Cam has managed to acquire. Total dedication to his craft. We felt invigorated and inspired. Conservation of critically endangered flora at fauna at its finest!

04.01.2022 A few pics from around the hills. Having some really amazing days out there!

03.01.2022 Lets lighten the mood. Perrins Creek, Dandenong Ranges. The ever cheeky, curious and resourceful Eastern Yellow Robin. If Santa was a bird, these guys would definitely be his little helpers. Soooo much character. Very busy in the forests and gardens of the hills at the moment.

01.01.2022 So, what has it been like working (when you can) in the bush during lockdown. A huge increase in dog poo More general rubbish Disposable wipes, face masks just thrown in the bush. Every site, everyday A genuine increase in human excrement in the parks and reserves, with the used toilet paper or equivalent to go with it... Seriously people......stick to your backyard if that’s how you’re going to behave. See more

01.01.2022 CHECK THIS OUT!!! Our Asha Billing combining her love of nature and...... well cakes and all things sweet So impressive!... Now is the time for all of us to acknowledge and understand that we are a part of nature. There is no nature separate to us humans. There is only nature with us contained within it. It would be a mighty challenge to find ANYBODY who lives life this way more than Ash and her sister Bren. Without even thinking about it, with every fibre of their soul. Now let’s get out of lockdown! Looks like we’ve got business to take care of over the first few morning tea’s!
