21.01.2022 Examples of steel cable, forge welded together, to make a solid billet of steel. Forged at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. After cutting the shapes and sanding to a 400grit, heat treated then etched in ferric chloride to bring out the patten
21.01.2022 To celebrate James's first "speck" with his metal detector, I made him a prospector/detectorists pick. Made from an old ride-on mower blade. 25mm mild steel forge-welded to hold handle.
21.01.2022 A little project I have been working on, a pocket knife I was recently given. Looked and felt "cheap". Scales tinplate, with chrome flaking off, and cellulose covering. Completely stripped back to component parts, all metalwork soaked in molasses and water and then re-sanded. Then re-assembled with the addition of brass liners. Scales: white box with hardwood inserts. Makers name found on the ricasso of the large blade "Elosi Made in Germany"
20.01.2022 Pointer complete, apart from having a nice hot dip in oil to "rust proof" it. (centre stem already had it's bath!!!)
19.01.2022 A little commission asked for today, by a visitor who wanted a memento. Needless to say, she was wrapped when she saw it!! Finished before she left Flagstaff Hill. Hope you enjoyed the night show Katherine!
19.01.2022 Another old tool I have found in the blacksmith's shop. I think it is a hardy hole anvil clamp. It seems to fit well!!

16.01.2022 A couple of things I've made recently. Fire set stand. Base was a rusty relic. Cleaned up and made new stand to fit. Then made a rake to go with the poker as a set. Maybe some tongs to come to complete the three pieces.
16.01.2022 My version of San Mai steel. Core is spring steel, with very thin sheet of stainless steel (from plates in a transformer) either side, then covered by wrought iron and then all forged welded together. Photos 1 and 2 early etches to check patten. 3 and 4 sanded to 800grt prior to final etch.5 and 6 either side of the finished knife, Handle sanded to 1000grt and linseed oiled then waxed with beeswax mixture.
15.01.2022 A little commission I did today. Garden tiller on the left "Made in India", one on the right, a rip off copy "Made in Australia"Seriously though, Bishan Pandey, from Gourmet India Restaurant, Mount Gambier commissioned a shorter version of the one made by a blacksmith in a village in India. I think I completed the brief.
15.01.2022 I received a request to repair/replace a broken garden fork. Plan A - create and replace broken tines with wrought iron replacements. Plan B - make a whole new fork, using 1020 steel.

12.01.2022 Query from a neighbour about an implement to pick up leaves, like a spike with a handle. Introducing the leaf picker. Made from coil spring, drawn out to 150mm, with a tang about 30mm. Hidden tang, brass pins, re-hardened and tempered. Handle old broom handle, oiled and waxed.
11.01.2022 Commissioned to make a brazier for a niece, to celebrate her sixth wedding anniversary. Design brief left up to me, apart from having some iron in it as the metal for 6th anniversary. Wrought iron incorporated into the bottom of both the number 1's and also into the end of the poker. The only electric welding was the legs to the base, and the alpha/numerics to the bars. All rivets made/affixed by hand, as hot rivets.
10.01.2022 A BBQ scraper made from 10mm sq and about 1mm old plate, forge welded. (Also doubled as an ice breaker when it was used Sunday) Needs must, needed a scraper for a BBQ I knew was grotty, so made one on Sat.!!
09.01.2022 A couple of items I've made over the last few days. The first two are views of a rams head I did for the top of a firepit poker. 05.01.2022 Recent customer at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village asked if I could make my outside wine glass/bottle holder into an indoor stand. This is the result, in situ at its new home.!!
05.01.2022 Requested by Leigh Dalziel from the Garrison Militia at #FlagstaffHillMaritimeVillage to make some lockable brackets to hold their ramming poles, worms, and swabbing poles, rather than have them in the rafters of the shed. This is what I came up with. Wrought iron pivot points forge-welded to 25mm flat bar. small piece 25mm flat bar forge-welded to 10mm round.
05.01.2022 A little forge welding practice!! 4 by 6mm dia cable, approx 100mm long.
05.01.2022 Spent time over the weekend re-vamping work area in forge. Moved a few things around to make it a little better to work in. Still have some more bricks to lay, and a stand for the swage block to go on.
04.01.2022 Another one!!! Star to go on tomorrow, and ready to be picked up tomorrow!!! Didn't get a chance to photograph this one with its star. Very happy customer!!!
04.01.2022 A couple of little forging jobs I've done recently. The star on the Christmas tree smelted from used .308 cartridges. The garden digger/fork forged from an old ride-on mower blade.
03.01.2022 Latest little project. An umbrella stand.
01.01.2022 Found some mystery objects in the shop a while back. Rusty as. Cleaned them up, and found they were the end pieces that attached drop heeled shafts to a light carriage. The shafts have a length of steel running from the end piece up around the bend in the shaft, for strength. The end pieces are made from a wrought iron casting and are all in one piece. Just to see if I could, I forge welded a bit of flat 25mm bar to one. I did!! Front and back photos. The bits I found were obviously "spare parts" from a blacksmiths/coach builder's shop.
