24.01.2022 Thrilled to be featured alongside Ai Weiwei @aiww and the iconic 'Good Fences Make Good Neighbours' project, in the this year's issue of Codaworx's best international Architectural Art publication. 21.01.2022 Engraved into the brickwork arrest Bob Hawke College are Noongar and English words that, like fragmented memory, hint at the history of the site around Roberts road and Couglan road in Subiaco. These fragments of stories are equally relevant to pre-colonial Aboriginal history, more recent Aboriginal and white history and the present experiences of students at BHC. This allows for a range of interpretations and engagement. Thanks to the MRA, Maggie Baxter @bateman_architect...s and Department of Education for trusting us with this experimental technique. Thanks to @compositecomponents for the meticulous machining and @pactconstruction for the accurate installation. 20.01.2022 Community is central to our public art commissions. For this project at Shenton Park, we shared community stories using quotes from hospital staff and polio patients, created a work that is both an artwork and a safety barrier to stop children running onto the road, and part of our commission was donated to the Post Polio Network which supports survivors of polio and their families. 17.01.2022 More #BobHawkeCollege spam * Roberts road facade detail: The form of the fins are inspired by the Maleleucas (Paperbark) trees on Roberts Rd, typical to the Swan coastal wetlands and featured in the adjacent Mueller Park. The fins also reference opening books to reveal the knowledge within and the process of learning itself: peeling back layer upon layer to achieve deep learning. 10.01.2022 Whoop whoop. Nice to have some good (but yes frivolous) news to share with you all. Forlano Design 's public art in Shenton Park is featured in this year's Transformative Walls issue by CodaWorks; leading international public art magazine. It also seems quite fitting right now that this project celebrates the resilience and strength of medical staff and patients, particularly during the Polio epidemic. We had incredible medical staff with very few resources (!!) that were innovative and developed new treatments to help fight polio. It was unprecedented time that has so many correlations with our current situation. They did an incredible job then, and I am sure our medical staff will make us proud again!!

We’ve jumped on board Celebrate WA’s call out to recognise Western Australian heroes here is our #WADayHero for the New Museum for WA Susan Langoya has a passion for politics and social issues.... As a young child she arrived in Australia from Uganda with her parents. She remembers the struggles growing up as an African refugee child in Australia, particularly the underlying racism and continuous feeling of being left out in a society. When Susan was appointed to the YMCA Youth Parliament in 2019, a program that encourages young people to comment on government policy and provide recommendations that young people want to see in our society, she used this opportunity to challenge the Australian media’s portrayal of people of colour, and to encourage multicultural representation. Let us not make children see the face of white Australia but a land of visible multiculturalism at work, because representation matters too. 06.01.2022 I'm trying to maintain some normality (hence the continuation of work posts) in what is a year difficult year for everyone so far. I fear for the youth and the long term stress and trauma this may cause. The school grounds should be full of smiles and laughter. I truly hope they still are. Meanwhile working from home is now, working from home with nesting urges to keep our home as safe and clean as possible and home schooling. Thankfully my kids are being 'epic'. 05.01.2022 For Bob Hawke College we trialled a new technique (we haven't seen it used before anywhere) of CNC routing/ engraving into bricks to create additional texture at eye and hand level to encourage a more intimate connection to the building. This is part of an early drawing of the proposal. The concept was to use terminology that references both the history of the Subiaco Oval and pre-colonial use of the site; such as Land and Mark. Combined with other words it doesn't prescribe an exact meaning to the viewer but instead enables their own creative interpretation and associations, so the viewer becomes a co-author. #brick #pattern #history #bobhawkecollege #penelopeforlano #forlanodesign #cnc #router #machining #subtractivemanufacturing

Sometimes it is, but more often than not, it is more significant, such as here for Bob Hawke College.
