25.01.2022 Welcome to the neighbourhood @ikigai.camera Ikigai’s new dropbox is now installed and ready to use for your film drop offs. Located at the Format Scan studio and it has a large enough chute for disposable cameras! #formatscan #ikigaicamera #filmphotography #filmisnotdead #shootfilm #keepfilmalive #35mmfilm #melbournefilm @ Format Scan

22.01.2022 Ever wondered what images look like with a bit of grain? Today I’m creating a grain test for @jessemarlow. I always export tiffs out at 0 grain, but sometimes it’s interesting to see how the grain function can change an image, for better... or worse.

22.01.2022 Removing dust and scratches today for print ready scans. Looking forward to seeing these printed huge. #formatscan #flextight #flextightx5 #printready #6x7film #filmphotography #filmsnotdead

20.01.2022 Super excited and pleased I could be part of the process for Joe Ruckli’s @__skippy__ current exhibition ‘Lightning Without Flash’. These compelling works and many more are showing at Webb Gallery, QCA Galleries Griffith University. Images scanned and colour graded by @formatscan #joeruckli #formatscan #flextightx5 #flexcolor @ Format Scan

20.01.2022 Stage 4 restrictions will thankfully not cease business for Format Scan. Being a sole-operator has its perks. We will not have contact with the public for the next 6 weeks, but you can get your negatives to us by using the dropbox (only for clients in the 5km radius, while engaging in exercise) or post them to 670 Queensberry st, North Melbourne. Please see our COVID19 FAQs on our website for more information (link in bio). Stay safe and support local.

19.01.2022 How lucky I feel to have a day scanning @matt.dunne current series on Wedge Tailed Eagles. Apparently Australia’s most persecuted species . Also one of my favourite birds!

19.01.2022 Business as usual at Format Scan, however please note that film will need to be either dropped off in the drop box or posted for the foreseeable future. I can arrange FaceTime for any consultations, or email. I can also upload your scanned images via wetransfer for quicker returns. Please support your small local businesses in this tough time.

17.01.2022 I had the pleasure to scan some work for @libbywillisphoto recently. Here is an image she took in Puglia, Italy.

16.01.2022 With the easing of restrictions, it’s now time for my clients to collect their film I’ve been storing during lockdown. I felt so lucky to still have clients during such a crazy time. Thank you to everyone who used Format Scan over the last few months. @xpeesx @lukepownall @cathyronalds @rohanhutchinson @lloydstubber @peterbbennetts @nick.chen.yh @ryansnegatives @christinamaycarey @_markforbes_ @seamus.platt @aaronmchapman @benhoskingphotographer @andrew.ferris.photography @christopher_tovo @matt.dunne #formatscan #flextight #flextightx5 #imacon #flexcolor #loup #filmphotography

15.01.2022 I had the pleasure to recently scan and grade @_markforbes_ photographs for his current exhibition ‘Beautiful Solitude’ which is showing at Stanley St Gallery in Sydney as part of Head On 2020. Shot on a Mamiya 7 on Kodak Portra 400. Congratulations Mark! @ Format Scan

15.01.2022 Oh I love contact sheets! The old lab printed contact sheets seem to be a thing of the past here in Australia. I’ve been really enjoying the tangibility of @ryan_achilles sheets he has included with his negs.

11.01.2022 Format Scan will be closed for a short holiday from July 1st - 14th. Please get in touch if you have any scans which need to be rushed through today or tomorrow. Happy winter holidays! #formatscan #filmscanning #highresolution #highres #flextightx5 #flextight #virtualdrumscanner

10.01.2022 This is a fun job! And a trip into the fashion industry in Europe in the 90’s. I’m currently scanning @christopher_tovo back catalogue of fashion images for a personal project.

09.01.2022 Another happy client. Thanks @lloydstubber for choosing me to scan and colour grade your beautiful and surreal photograph of these Batfish! It was a fun and colourful one to work on! Lovingly printed here by @thirdsfineartprinting. @ Format Scan

08.01.2022 Gotta love old contact sheets! Doing an archive scan and colour grade for artist Craig Bender today. @madbushranger

07.01.2022 One of my favourite parts of my job is seeing my clients images go through to printing completion. This awesome high key photo by @lukepownall was scanned and colour graded by myself and then loving printed at @thirdsfineartprinting.

07.01.2022 @kate_golding series of work ‘Near this spot’ was commissioned for PHOTO 2020 this year, which has now been postponed until next year. I feel honoured to have scanned and graded her images for this festival. On 15 January 2020 the city that spans Kulin Nation territory was blanketed in smoke from the out of control bushfires that raged in the south eastern region of this continent now known as Australia. I went to Euro-Yroke to photograph the statue of Cook and collect seawe...ed and burnt leaves from the water (see earlier posts). On the way home, I stopped at Cooks’ Cottage. The smoke wasn’t as visible in Fitzroy Gardens. I waited patiently for tourists to either enter the cottage or move on from posing with selfie sticks so that I could photograph the building without people (which would obviously be a lot easier now). I also wanted a breath of wind to move the flag. This is the best frame I got that day because hand-eye coordination has never been a strength of mine (seriously, there’s a machine that tests reaction time at Melbourne Museum... and let’s just say I was not fast). And A LOT of people like to pose with the cottage in the background. I walked around to the other side of the cottage and grabbed some warrigal green leaves through the fence and then dropped the films in to the lab to be developed. When I got the films back I found a scratch over a few negatives. Apparently something had gotten into the camera back and winding the film on damaged some of the frames. In this project sometimes I deliberately scratch negatives with a blade to remove the monuments. After 8 years of working on the project together my Hasselblad decided to give me a hand with that. Side note: Cook never actually lived in the cottage. That’s why the apostrophe is after the s - Cooks’ Cottage. It belong to his parents... after he’d left home. More on that another time. This project is supported by the City of Melbourne arts grants program. @photofestivalau #PHOTO2020 is now #PHOTO2021 @ Format Scan

06.01.2022 I love seeing my clients work at that final stage; printed and framed! This beautiful landscape is by Queensland based artist @aaronmchapman colour grading by me. #formatscan #aaronmchapman #flextightx5 #flextight #imacon #flexcolor

04.01.2022 Don’t forget Format Scan has a dropbox! If you need to drop film afterhours, be like @ikigai.camera! Dropbox is checked daily.

03.01.2022 Thank you to my amazing clients for supporting my small business, keeping the scanner running and the dust off blowing!

02.01.2022 A whole day of scanning and colour grading 4x5in! I love working with large format. Thanks to @lowai.cheng & @tomross.xyz.
