22.01.2022 After the event we had a debrief on any issues and working on resolutions. We decided to look at the flywheels and see if we could reduce issues associated with stock flywheels and the plastic fan attached to it. I found a fan on the track. Somebody would have had a hot engine. We ordered a billet flywheel which turned up today. Time to build a one off engine, go back to the track and do some testing over the break. I might need a car to test in. I can already see John Marano's hand waving....lol
22.01.2022 Notta Grand Prix dates for 2020.....
22.01.2022 Another night shift at Formula Student. Our other business, Motorsport Performance Engineering, took on 2 fitting and machining apprentices from the Formula High School program last year. They are doing 2 nights and a Saturday per week each working on getting parts ready for the program, so 4 nights and a Saturday in total. Callum did Mon/Tues this week, so Rhylie is on Wed/Thurs. Unfortunately that means Greig is on Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Sat..... We're looking forward to tearing 2020 out of the calendar this year. John Marano may recognise that engine.
21.01.2022 I'll publish the results of the Raceday in the following posts. Cheers and thanks for your patience. The numbers under the names is the deviation of times. The system collates individual drivers times and determines the average deviation, then collates the individual drivers to determine a team number. And the winner is...... Warwick State High School 2019-2020 class. Congrats to Michael Plant and the team at Warwick State High School. That team also includes school admin, th...e principal and most importantly their industry sponsors who in some cases become future employers. A great effort by all. Second and third place goes to Sandgate and St James. A great effort from St James as this was their first event and they're on the podium. Congrats!! 20.01.2022 The 2020 Formula Student event information has been updated on the website ( www.formulastudent.edu.au ) under the heading events. You'll also see another event added, 2020 Notta Grand Prix. More info to come.
20.01.2022 It's been a bit quiet as the year kicks off and classes get under way. The Christmas break wasn't really a break for us however as we continued working on the new workshop at Yandina. We're putting in a 6m wide by 24m long mezzanine which will have an upstairs air conditioned computer classroom and air conditioned stock room as well as general mezzanine storage. we were held up by engineering and rather than starting before Christmas we started mid January. firstly we dug som...e test bores in the concrete floor 4 metres deep to check out the sub structure and then the engineers designed our footings. The footings are huge with a 1400 x 600 x 800 deep top cap box section and two 2200 deep piers 450mm diameter, so 3 metres deep in total. Once they were completed we were able to start on the floor itself. The outer frame is 300 PFC (Parallel Flange Channel) with 300mm floor joists. the yellow tongue flooring will go up Friday and then the office, classroom, stock room and toilet area can be framed up. It's a huge project but coming along great. Once the floor is up we can clear the ground floor and pressure wash the whole area before moving in the equipment. Fun times. See more
18.01.2022 A quick video on the hall effect.
17.01.2022 2021 car is coming along nicely. The class is enjoying this course so much they are well ahead of schedule.
17.01.2022 Work till midnight, up at 4am, on the road at 5am.... Just another day at the office. We've been invited to attend the Mackay DATTA event and schools in the area. Stop one, just outside Maryborough
17.01.2022 We should be testing a different clutch set-up next Saturday at the Driver Training Circuit (DTC) at Lakeside Raceway. The Sunshine Coast Motorsport Club is holding a spront event so we've entered the Sunshine Beach car. John Marano from Sunshine Beach dropped their engine off this morning and I'm close to finishing the clutch installation. Because most events are coming to an end for the year, we'll probably also test the billet flywheel and see what difference it makes. I'd rather change one thing at a time, however we're time poor as the year comes to an end. I'll try and get some pics tomorrow.
17.01.2022 Do you drink coffee?... We like a nice coffee to get the day started (and continue). I've just tried Craig Simon's "Brake late, Throttle early" flavour and it's great. I've known Craig for a number of years and he really know's his coffe. And he's a motorsport guy, who else would name a coffee flavour about braking and accellerating. I'm posting this as Craig is based in Melbourne and has been hit by the lockdowns which is affecting business. With online shopping these days location is irrelevant really. I wanted to help a fellow motorsport enthusiest and his small business. Check out their store at https://criteriacoffee.com/about-us/
16.01.2022 Thursday and Friday at the new Yandina facility saw the guys flat out on a Clubman chassis redesign. It was all making decisions based on the cohort and their ability to manufacture accurate components. Craig, Kevin and Callum dismantled the more complex structures and redesigned those sections to make it more "friendly" for the students. Friday had Greig and Shane working on the engine modifications and more specifically the electronic components to effect the rev limiter to... allow us to remove the mechanical governors. Saturday at the workshop had Greig working on the rev limiter and experimenting with the voltage required to actuate the Power MOSFET that actually does the grunt work for the ignition coils. Great success with the engine kill working, albeit set at 2,000rpm for Safety. Woohoo!! Saturday also had Greig and Devon, our industry based draughty who also assists in our chassis models, working on the Clubman chassis in the 3D model realm. Come Sunday and it's 3D model touch up time, making sure all the 25 x 25 SHS joins in the model are as they are in real life. It's a very time consuming process. Sunday also has Greig frustrated as he blew up an arduino.... Doh..... A quick compile on a new board and we'll be away again. Josh will be tweaking the software that allows the rev limit to be set remotely or by the server in a penalty situation and it will be time to start designing, machining and potting the components into a housing that even students can't break...lol More pics and info to come. Here's one of the hall effect signal that the rev limiter sees.
15.01.2022 Here's the list of laps completed by school.
14.01.2022 Out in the bush, all the checks are done, buttoned up ready for transit but, first came a reviel for the school and local media. How does 1 transport 4 cars from Dalby SHS at once?... With a 4 hour road trip of course
14.01.2022 A couple of Clubby chassis pics
14.01.2022 For those not at the event this year there was a special award given out to Dalby State High School. I think it's easy to think the Metro schools have the edge on regional schools, however the guys at Dalby are always pushing the boundaries. This year Dalby State High School had another first with the first full size class of female students. That's right, the whole team was young women who had no problem taking the engineering challenge up to the boys!!!!....... While most classes have young women in them, Dalby SHS broke down the barriers and had a car built, prepped and competed with by a group of young women. The challenge now will be to see which school can join Dalby in breaking down the gender barrier in engineering. Who's next??
13.01.2022 Here's the most consistent drivers list showing the average deviation. This means the difference between laps. That's what winning the Formula High school 6 hr is about. Consistent laps over and over.
13.01.2022 Formula-SAE is underway in Victoria. Former Formula High School student Kyra is part of the UQ F-SAE team. Here's a clip from day 1. https://www.facebook.com/261116511196/posts/10157808663266197/
13.01.2022 And now for the other awards. I want to thanks the group of teachers who participated as judges. We like to keep it impartial. Their only brief was they couldn't vote for their own team. Thanks again guys. Pit crew Award Metro South Trade Training Centre... Best presented Team cars Padua College Best Presented individual car Eagleby Best presented team Northlakes And the only other award we decide. The award for MOST LAPS goes to the Formula Student "Manx buggy tow vehicle". Thanks again for everyone's participation. That goes to students, teachers, schools, our normal staff, our staff on the day (Our staff grows to 13 people on race day), parents, principals, sponsors, employers... A huge thanks goes out to John Tetley, the owner of Queensland raceways. Without the support of this great organisation we wouldn't be able to put on such a great event. So we're almost ready to tear 2020 out of the calendar. We have a bit more work to do to finish the year off, and in fact the internal workload at Formula Student has ramped up to prepare for a huge year in 2021. We're already working on any issues encountered at the event in preparation for 2021. If you thought 2020 was a good event, get ready for 2021. It looks like you'll see the number of vehicles increase by at least 50% next year. I'm expecting 30-35 cars on track. And there's some really good builds happening. everyone is lifting their game and the presentation of teams and cars is getting up there. Remember, future employers are at these events. Impress them by your efforts and the rewards will come along. Cheers Greig Formula Student
12.01.2022 The official clubman build is coming along nicely. We now have a 3D model based on the prototype build with a few tweaks we wanted to do. We'll have the full car built as a 3d model over xmas and we'll have it ready to go as a new chassis in the LMS ready for classes in the new year.... One advantage over the other chassis is a new build methodology for the chassis that will allow structures to be built sparate with jigs and the chassis pieced together... Exciting times!!!
10.01.2022 Interesting story on ABC news regarding the use of "Bundy clocks" under a new ruling from the Fair Work Commision. It definately validates the imbedded clocking on/off in the Formula Student programs as the new legislation moves into traditional white collar jobs such as legal services, banking and many other areas that traditionally never had this system for salaries up to $148,000 per annum. To read about the new ruling check out the link below. https://mobile.abc.net.au//fair-work-wage-theft-u/12001204
09.01.2022 Ready for great day on the track tomorrow!
09.01.2022 Thanks to our friends at the Australian Institute of Advanced Studies for helping us out with a tight timeline to produce "subject selection" videos for our partner schools to use to assist students select appropriate studies. Australian Institute of Advanced Studies has several Film and Television/Media certificates on scope as well as doing corporate work for select clients. We had a tight deadline and were able to engage them to produce our videos. Their lecturers have ind...ustry backgrounds and we would recommend schools talk to them if you're looking to partner with an RTO to deliver media qualifications. This is our "approval" video which is a first draft for our Formula Student Drone program. What do you think? https://youtu.be/bi58OLtevs4
09.01.2022 It was great to Upper Coomera SHS at their first Formula High School event. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2481230815295161&id=482832575135005
06.01.2022 It's been just over 24hrs since the 2019 Formula High School 6 hr was run and won. The event wouldn't be anything if not for the amazing support from Queensland Raceways and John Tetley in particular. The track staff from Lakeside bent over backwards to make sure anything we required was catered for. I'd like to say a big public thanks to John, Dick, Justin and Steve for their effort and support. If you were given the opportunity to be part of the event as a driver, a parent.../guardian/relative, a teacher, a principal, a sponsor and/or spectator why not take 5 minutes to pen a quick email to Qld Raceways for supporting you. It's that appreciation that keeps their support. [email protected] Don't forget to ask them about affordable entry level racing. Notta Grand Prix had a number of parent/son/daughter teams racing last weekend. We've run a team of teachers in the past and it was great fun. Thanks again to everybody involved. Another great year. Belinda and Greig

01.01.2022 Warwick State High school ready to roll. Test day today in preparation for tomorrow's event.
01.01.2022 While we know our race car builds are beneficial to the classes and students that build them, the project itself has far reaching benefits, or could have far reaching benefits to a much larger student group. Stu Borrows from Dalby State High can not only see this, but he has done something about it by looking outside the box and taking the Formula High School program to the Head of Dept meeting at Dalby State High challenging the other faculties within the school to become in...volved. First cab off the rank is the Yr 8/9 Archimedes program class, essentially high end science kids. They spent the afternoon learning about Roll Centre, by analysing the suspension and how it interacts with the vehicle handling. They've taken up a challenge to next look at bump steer and through analysis firstly determine if it has any, and if it does, how can they reduce it. I'm really excited to see this direction taken in a school and as Stu Borrows said, "break down the silo mentality and see the connectivity of all faculties".... Who's next?... Will the Business faculty become involved with sponsorship proposals?... Will the STEM guys incorporate some of the technology into their learning... What is the next group to engage in the program. What's happening at your school? See more
01.01.2022 Back to the grindstone in Dalby. Dispite any success at the race meeting last week, preparation for next year starts now. Frist an indepth debrief from last week's race meeting and insights from this years course. Then a detailed check of the cars looking for gremlins and the investigation of a few issues we had on the day. Next year will be bigger, better with a view to reliabilitr and consistency. Stay tuned for 2020...
01.01.2022 One of the objectives of the Formula Student programs is developing initiative in students and we see this in varying forms. Generally, this is by engaging and partnering with industry which is a great outcome for a VET class. The class at Rochedale State High School have taken a different direction this year with COVID having an impact on the community in general and a lot of people are doing it tough. This year Rochedale State High School will be using the race day as a fun...draiser for Beyond Blue and to raise awareness of mens mental health. In the current climate the class felt that many men are doing it tough and are facing difficult times with stress and financial strain. As a team they would like to demonstrate to the community that young men can make a positive difference in the everyday lives of those in need and develop the positive community skills which are most beneficial to their local neighbourhoods. With the end of year event being a 6 hour endurance event at Lakeside Park Raceway, the goal is to complete as many laps in the car as possible within the 6 hour time limit. The race is a test of workmanship and reliability of the STUDENT BUILT car. Students are expecting to complete 75 plus laps of the Lakeside International Raceway on Friday October 16th. The intention of Rochedale State High School is to receive sponsorship from their valued community members per completed lap. Belinda Richardson, a Director of Formula student, was so impressed with this first-time initiative that she has decided Formula Student will also contribute $10 per lap completed by the Rochedale State High School team. Things like this dont get off the ground without guidance and approvals, and I think a big shout out should go to the class co-ordinator Lance Eggert and school Principal Elena Itsikson. Even Corrine McMillan, the State Member for Mansfield got in on the action while visiting the school and was keen to jump in the car for a photo. If you are interested in being part of this initiative and would like to be a sponsor feel free to contact Mr Lance Eggert by email at [email protected] We wish them all the best.
