20.01.2022 We should be testing a different clutch set-up next Saturday at the Driver Training Circuit (DTC) at Lakeside Raceway. The Sunshine Coast Motorsport Club is holding a spront event so we've entered the Sunshine Beach car. John Marano from Sunshine Beach dropped their engine off this morning and I'm close to finishing the clutch installation. Because most events are coming to an end for the year, we'll probably also test the billet flywheel and see what difference it makes. I'd rather change one thing at a time, however we're time poor as the year comes to an end. I'll try and get some pics tomorrow.
17.01.2022 YEAR 12 ENGINEERING | FORMULA STUDENT WRAPUP Back in October, the Year 12 Cert II Engineering class competed in the 2020 Formula Student race for 2020. There we...re approximately 30 cars competing on the day and Rochedale finished 7th. This was a great result considering the car had ongoing problems with the accelerator cable. However all of the students manufactured parts held up well with no other problems. The students decided earlier in the year to raise money for Beyond Blue. They wanted to raise money and awareness for men’s mental health. In doing this, the students raised $5750. This was a great effort by a class of 14 students. By raising $5750 your students have directly helped over 288 people seek support from a mental health professional by either phone call, web chat or email through Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service. And for that, we are so grateful. Zareen; Beyond Blue fund raising team. The school would like to acknowledge the following companies for their support. 15.01.2022 One of the things we're proud of in the Formula High School program is the opportunity for students to be able to push themselves that little bit harder to achieve an outcome. But like all programs it is very reliant on the dedication and support of their teachers to achieve these outcomes. Quite often you hear comments such as "the teacher must have welded that" or "students vouldn't have done that". Sunshine Beach State High is one of those schools where the teachers are ex...tremely passionate (like a lot of others by the way) about giving the students the opportunity to achieve above and beyond. Paul and John are happy to forego their own lunchbreaks so a student can be given an opportunity to push himself/herself that little bit further. The rewards speak for themselves. We're also proud to say that we try hard to work with schools that have this passion and steer clear of those that don't. The program isn't easy, because if it was then what was the point in the first place. Our partner schools should be very proud of what they do and the passion teachers put into the outcomes of others. The photo attached is a weld by a student who has left school last week to start the next chapter of his life and his endeavour to be a pipe welder. I think he'll have a pretty good shot at it. I'm sure John and Paul at Sunshine Beach State High are very proud of the outcomes of young Sam as he leaves one journey and prepares for another. See more
14.01.2022 The race day CSV file is uploaded to the webpage. You just need to download it and apply filters to extract the data you want. Scroll to the bottom of the page below and you'll see the link. https://www.formulastudent.edu.au/Formula-High-School-6hr-E
13.01.2022 After the event we had a debrief on any issues and working on resolutions. We decided to look at the flywheels and see if we could reduce issues associated with stock flywheels and the plastic fan attached to it. I found a fan on the track. Somebody would have had a hot engine. We ordered a billet flywheel which turned up today. Time to build a one off engine, go back to the track and do some testing over the break. I might need a car to test in. I can already see John Marano's hand waving....lol
06.01.2022 Testing the clutch and brakes at Lakeside today
06.01.2022 We haven't posted for a while. The start of the year is always very busy however the running is slowing down to a quick jog which is nice. The Formula Student track cars will be out this year running in the Queensland Raceways Sports and Sedan category and a couple of other select events. The N14 is first on track and will be out this weekend. The VZR should be out ready for round 2 in a 2 car team. It runs an SR20VE engine and should be around 200hp at the wheels after Sunsh...ine Coast Supercars finishes with it on their hub dyno. It runs a welded front diff for better cornering traction, braided brake lines throughout for more consistent braking, brake booster delete for better brake feel, coil over suspension to allow suspension adjustment, a big rear sway bar to transfer weight to the front when cornering, electric water pump to save engine hp and more control over cooling, electric power steering from an "A" class Mercedes again to save lost hp, VZR steering rack to reduce the number of turns lock to lock for more responsive steering, and a Haltec ECU. It will be on the dyno today having the Haltec tuned and on the trailer tonight ready for practice at QR tomorrow. We'll post some updates here. Queensland Raceways is a huge supporter of the Formula Student program and we look forward to not only competing in their QRSS category this year but also having the student cars running in the Formula Student 6hr on their awesome Lakeside track in October. The QRSS also has a couple of rounds at Lakeside later in the year, with one of them just 2 weeks before the Formula Student 6hr. See more
03.01.2022 We've been busy working on the clutch and brakes. We'll be at Lakeside tomorrow testing both on the DTC track as we've entered the Sunshine Beach car in the Sprints. We have the other prototype clutch in the car and a different brake set-up. You can see in the video that you can now lock up the wheels if needed. A much better set-up.
